Our Holy Mother
St. John of God
St. Monica
St. Teresa of Calcutta
St. Faustina

I’ll have been a Catholic three years this coming Easter, so I still have much to learn.

St Benedict Joseph Labre. If a mentally ill homeless man can become a saint then there’s hope for me yet!

I didn’t have a patron saint of my own and I wasn’t named after any saint either (unlike my sister who is named after Mary) which made me really sad as a kid. (Parents please name your kids after saints)

But I do believe and acknowledge that St. Jude Thaddeus (patron of desperate/lost cases) is the patron saint of our family for a very good reason. Growing up, there were a lot of problems in my family - my parents had a broken marriage.

We’d always make a yearly visit to the Shrine of St. Jude and I’d always pray for my parents’ strained marriage (they were on the verge of a divorce when I was in fifth grade). Fast forward a couple years, I’m 23 and my parents are still together. Things are not perfect but they’re much better than before. I still prayed to St. Jude over the years but until recently, I forgot that I had asked St. Jude for such a request. A couple of weeks ago I started praying the St. Jude Novena again and was reminded of this great favour.

That’s why even though I was’t named after a saint, I’ve grown to love St. Jude and I know he’s always praying for my family. 🙂

Mary and Joseph, of course. And I think I’ve always had some level of devotion to the Holy Family that survived even through my twenty year Protestant stint.
But St Therese had become my favorite other Saint mainly because I can only do little things and she taught me that that is ok.

My southern Baptist great grandmother had all kinds of Marian stuff. Just putting it out there.

St Jude Thaddeus and St. John Paul II

Many of my personal petition have been answered by God because of St. Jude !

JP II because I really admired him during his reign as pope and most of his homilies and speeches talk of spirituality that can be understood by the masses

St. Thomas More

The first Catholic church I attended was with a Catholic girlfriend of mine during our sophomore year at Western Michigan University, and it was at the St. Thomas Student Parish on campus. I loved it, loved her, but we didn’t end up together even though she changed my life.

When I had to decide between her and another woman, I went with her to see “A Man For All Seasons”, which is about St. Thomas More’s battle with King Henry VIII, and I decided to go with my other girlfriend who was and is a Sicilian Catholic woman that I have now been married to for 52 years.

However, after being involved in Judaism for over 20 years, I started having numerous premonitions, and at first I didn’t know what this was all about. However, one thing that kept coming into my mind was that I needed to drive the near three hours and revisit St.Thomas More Student Parish on campus for mass. I did, and during the Lord’s Prayer I finally realized what this was about, namely to lead me back into the Church. Thus, I reconverted a couple of years ago where I’m very much at home and am very active in parish activities.

I so much cherish these two Catholic women that changed my life all for the better. IMO, much like St. Thomas More, they’re saints
