Quite good. Probably a D for effort. No, that’s a bit harsh. Make it a C.

What prohibits me from awarding a higher mark is that I do not follow how I (or anybody else who approaches the text without Catholic presuppositions) can be certain that this particular interpretation of Matthew 16:18 can be directly tied to the exclusively Catholic notion of papal infallibility.

Actually, I’m going back to a D. Sorry. This is a classic example of eisegesis.

Apologetically,
Mick

Well lets bring it up to a A. Heres how Im gonna get it.

Do you believe that Jesus Christ had the authority to teach scripture? Do you believe that he had that authority to pass down the authority to teach scripture to his apostles? Do you believe that the apostles has that authority to also pass down the way Jesus Christ said? Then how can you see it any other way then the way the Catholic Church does. Now you explain to me where the authority was taken away. The balls in your court now.

Oh by the way I want scripture, Its always demanded of me, I showed you mind, you show me where Jesus Christ said authority to teach will died with hiim?, or with the apostles. 🍿🍕🍰 I will have a nice lunch while I am waiting!😃
Well, I’m inclined to up your mark to a B. You see from my profile that I’m a former Evangelical and that I’m now an Orthodox catechumen and yet you are trying to get me to argue against the exclusively Catholic doctrine of papal infallibility on scriptural grounds – and that, mind you, after completely ignoring my assertion that you presented a classic example of eisegesis yourself in your previous post. In fact, this is such a deft move I’m going to up your mark to an A. You deserve it.

However, rather than getting bogged down in what you think I ought to think perhaps you’ll allow me instead to explain why I rejected the notion of papal infallibility during my exploration of Catholicism and subsequent comparison to Holy Orthodoxy. It has nothing to do with pulling selective quotes from the Bible and pontificating upon them (as if anyone would).

The teaching is that when the pope “speaks from the chair on a matter of faith and morals“ there can be no mistake i.e. the pope’s teaching is infallible in that instance. I reasoned that since the Catholic Church itself had proclaimed this doctrine, it was like somebody saying, “You can trust me because, in my own estimation, I’m trustworthy.” Then I reflected that the Catholic Church has taught wrongly by example and by omission. The actions and inactions of Catholics past and present, both laity and clergy, can be cited to prove the point. If the Catholic Church had made errors in matters of behavior and in matters of administration and in matters of judgment and in matters of discipline, there seemed to be no objective reason for supposing that freedom from error in matters of doctrine was a realistic proposition, either. In other words, the doctrine achieves nothing in practice since it’s not much use having an infallible pope if Catholic clergymen are telling Catholic laity that it’s OK to use contraceptives or to have an abortion. And as only one pope has dared to invoke this supposed power, why have it at all? You’ll appreciate that this is the reasoning of somebody who does not have Catholic presuppositions. Obviously, this line of thinking is impossible for a Catholic. But it’s certainly possible for Catholics to understand it – especially those who can score an A. 😛

In short, the Orthodox understanding of authority seemed to me to make much more sense. And it still does. Orthodoxy doesn’t change so no Orthodox bishop has any material about which he could make an infallible pronouncement even if he felt such an urge. Somebody told me an Orthodox bishop did in fact feel such an urge in the thirteenth century but it turned out to be indigestion. I don’t suppose that’s a true story, though. My feeling is it was much more likely to have been hiccups.

By the way, for Orthodox Christians, Wednesdays and Fridays are fast days, which practice goes back to the Didache as perusal of chapter 8 can confirm. Orthodoxy doesn’t change, you see.

I hope you enjoyed your Friday lunch. 😉

Cordially,
Mick

Hi SS teacher, let me do my best to explain this short and sweet. Its hard to understand I agree, Here it is.

Christ has given the Church the infallibility that it need to proclaim the gospel message faithfully. the authentic teachers of the Church are certainly not infallible in ALL THINGS. BUT when they teach dexisively in CHIRSTS NAME matters of divine faith or morals they teach infallibly. Do you understand?

Now the Pope has an exceptional teaching role in the Church because theHoly Father has a special teaching office among the bishops. He gets his authority from one person Christ. Still it is practice to consult with other bishops and theologians before giving authoritative teachings to the church.

Christ himself teaches through the Holy Father to guard his church in the truth. Even if the pope is unwothyof his office the LORD GUARDS the CHURCH from false teaching at his hands.

Now Papal infalliblity does not extend to matters of natural science or merely human wisdom. See what I mean.

Everyone gets confused here. THis is the easiest way to say it The Church MUST PROCLAIM ALWAYS THE WORD OF GOD. THis sacred teaching is found in scripture and tradition and is guarded by Christ through the teaching offfice of his Church or magisterium. Through the gift of infallibility the HS guards the faith of the whole Church from error.

Now here is the easy way to explain faith and morals the pope teaches us today what to do, okay. now as long as in todays world he does not give us a discipline that goes against any of the previous teachings its okay. Here is an example. eating meat on Friday was never a sacred teaching of scripture or tradition. But the Pope wanted Catholics to abide by it. As Catholic’s we must obey his wishes and do as we are told. Now we give up meat on Fridays as a discipline something for God. In return we get a larger gift from God. See what I mean. And inner spiritual reward. Now the next pope says you do not have to do the meat on Friday you can do another discipline if you want. See what I mean. ITs for our Good. It is a way of bringing us closer to God. Now the next pope says forget it you do not have to do that. But maybe says during lent we must do one good deed, whatever. But see what I mean. A discipline and teaching are very very different.

Now if the Pope would say in ex-cathedra. No meat on Friday ever no exceptions. Thats it, then it came right from God, its now forever. No other pope can change it. See what I am saying.

What you must remember all has not been revealed to us yet. But when Jesus wants it revealed it will be, and it will become just as much scripture and tradition as from the beginning of time. Hope I explained it in a way you can understand what I am saying.:gopray:

Here is how we know we he speaks from the Chair he cannot be wrong. Jesus promised it to us 1 John 2 20:27 the body of the faithful as a whole anointed as they are by the HS cannot err in matters of belief.

Hope this helps you to understand better. Trust me I am not arrogant. Without the teaching of my Pope and Bishops and guidence I am nothing. God knew that I would never understand so he left them for me to learn from. It is not that I know anything at all, I admit I do not. but it is the grace that God gave me to see, and it is grace that gave me the sight to see that led me to the Church and keeps me there forever. It never was my own teaching. I have never saw anything that my Church has ever taught me, that ever went against scripture. Trust me I study daily. And the Church and the Pope is who gets the A. You are correct I deserve a D. Actually a F. But I try. SOmeday with grace from God that I pray for I will earn that A though. I keep trying thats for sure.😃

OK…we have heard it before…the Catholic Church is wrong. The Catholic Church misinterprets the Bible because it relies on one man, the Pope…etc, etc.

Fine…let us say that …hypothetically…the Catholic Church is wrong!

What makes any of these original founders of any of the Protestant denominations infallible in how they interpreted the Scripture?

Are these men not just merely being elevated to the status of “Pope”???

If we cannot trust the people of the Catholic Church to interpret Scripture, what makes some random guy ever more capable?

If Scripture were meant to be the SOLE source of Christian understanding, then why is it not more clear. You figure once the Reformation came that there would have been no need for interpretation after Luther. Right?

Thanks!
Syllogism.
We must have an ifallible guide to know the true things of God.
The teaching magesterium of the church is made up of men.
Men are fallible.
There must be an infallible guide.
God the Holy Spirit is our infallible given to all who believe, romans 8:9.

1 Cor 2:10-16
10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, 13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. 16 ForWHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ.
NASU

We must have an ifallible guide to know the true things of God.
The Catholic Church likes to claim it is the only source of correct interpretation and therefore necessary to prevent people from being misled.

But there is an important element missing from this equation:
No matter how clear and concise the RC or anyone else explains Scriptures, it’s useless unless God opens the mind of the listener to understanding and his heart to acceptance.

We all have freewill and some people will reject the truth, just because they want to.
This is a known fact. It says so in the Bible.

That means your “infallible” interpretations are worthless.

1Jo 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

Of course God has given us teachers {Eph 4:11} but they, as all of us, can be in error. None of us listens perfectly to the Holy Spirit.

Maybe you can help and tell me how this papa infallibillt works. have a great night and may Our Lord bless you

First the Cathloic Curch does not just count of one man , that one man has mant, many helping him. After all his help he is the one that will make the call, He is not like Calvin and the other that make a call and your are the one that must live with it , If the Pope is wrong on Faith and morals, and he is not.because God said he will not be…But the reforums can pick what they believe right or Wrong. Cathloics have many under one name, but protestants have One under One name and Cathloic have what we call Apostolic Succession,Church fathers and oral tradition any many other things for al most 2000 years not 500.
As a Cathloic I like the odds ,many man or one man take your pick
