I’m fairly new to the genre but have enjoyed it so far. Now some of the stories I’ve read are more dark or graphic than I care for, but the average adventure tale I enjoy. Also enjoyed dressing up for a sci-fi con in my ensemble of lacy skirt, a top that I found at a thrift store that “looked Steampunkish” and a mini tophat that I made. 🙂 My gal pals and I had a good time and enjoyed seeing others’ costumes as well.

A couple of us didn’t get our costumes completed so we will have to debut our corsets, goggles, rayguns, and other accessories at another con when we get them done. 😉

I’ve been reading short story anthologies so haven’t come up with one favorite author as yet. I’ve also been filling in the gaps of classics (Verne, Wells, et al) I had yet to read.

I don’t know much about steampunk, but my sister’s into it and from I’ve seen it seems cool and fun 🙂 If I were younger, I could easily get into it.

You should check out Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films:

Howl’s Moving Castle and Castle in the Sky

As well as: Steamboy by Katsuhiro Otomo

I am not fluent in the genre; but I love what I have seen.

My favorite works in the genre are **The Difference Engine **and Anti-Ice.

The first time I ever heard of Steampunk was when I was searching online to buy a velvet choker. So many of the designers were advertising “Steampunk” style, which looked to me kind of like a blend of goth / 80’s punk. Your post made me do a quick internet search and I just learned that it’s a genre of science fiction.

I’m not a science fiction fan, and I’ve never gotten involved in any subculture groups, but the people I saw in Steampunk convention pictures look like they’re having a lot of fun.

I’d probably enjoy attending a festival just to see some of the outfits. I like vintage clothing and have always been interested in the Victorian period.

I’m not too interested in Steampunk but I do love the costumes.

I like the artwork and have even sketched a steampunk pic or two on the Draw Something 2 app. No familiarity with fiction though…

Girl Genius is a Steampunk comic series, and it’s pretty interesting. (I think it’s Steampunk, anyway. It might be Gaslamp Fantasy or something similar.) I haven’t read any other stories, but I do love the costumes. 🙂

My passion for it has cooled somewhat as of late (been more focused on Diesel), but there are still some neat things I’d like to build. And it’s always a very fun subject to introduce people to. It has a universal appeal, from what I’ve seen, even if people will look at you like you’re crazy if you go out in public wearing a top hat. 😃

My friend and I went to Wendy’s for lunch the day of the con and got some wondering looks :bigyikes: but it was close to Halloween. It was funny though - at first we were the only costumed people from the con in Wendy’s, then a few others - mostly sci-fi or anime constumed, came in. 😃

My husband and I read Lady Mechanika. We basically out grew anime conventions and found ourselves at Steampunk conventions and table top conventions.

After the release of the Convergence of Cyriss from War Machine, I’ve found myself a lot more interested in the clock work side of Steampunk. I need to get back to work on my clockwork “gun”.

I currently have a leather gas mask and goggles. I have no money so a corset is out. 😦 Thankfully my second pair of glasses are round and go really well with the pieces I do have.

If you sew or know someone who does, the pattern companies such as Simplicity and McCall’s have corset patterns, and often the fabric stores will have patterns on sale for 99 cents. Then compile the components one by one - the fabric, boning, etc. using discount coupons or sales, and you may be able to have a corset with minimal investment. 👍

I quite like Steampunk as it has Goth influences (here is the Cure fan in me coming out!) but unfortunately I don’t go out enough these days to dress up in all those amazing outfits and costumes. I have some really lovely coats that just sit in my wardrobe…

I knitted some Steampunk-themed handwarmers for my friend this winter. They were black with silvery-grey and had nut & bolt buttons as decorations on the side 🙂

For the con, my friend knitted herself some spats. I sewed some from a Simplicity pattern but didn’t get the straps put on so I improvised a ribbon band. We both had a few “spat issues” with them sliding down as we walked around at the con. We will be better prepared next year, and also have our goggles and rayguns finished. I need to invent my time machine, then if I get behind . . . no worries! 😃

That sounds great, apart from the spat issues 😛 Many friends and I keep on telling ourselves each year to go to a convention here called Avcon (Anime & Video Games Convention) even though we aren’t gamers, we just want to dress up… 😃

At this con, there were quite a few fans of the online comic Homestuck dressed in grey makeup with candy corn horns. Then many various Steampunk outfitted folks like my friends and I, and some anime dressed. And miscellaneous. There was a group of Star Wars people who had a booth - the 501st Legion - they dress as the villains and there’s another group in existence, they said, who dress as the heroes. So an interesting mix.

I like steampunk.

I like a steampunk group called Steam Powered Giraffe. They’re good musicians, have really great harmony, cool songs…especially their version of Rihanna’s “Diamonds”. The guy who does the vocals, it’s effectively a solo, but he seems to have at least a 2-octave range, and he sings in what sounds like 2 completely separate voices. Check it out on youtube. I can’t opst the link due to technical difficulties.

Also: Murdoch Mysteries, a TV show in Canada. I like to call it “CSI: Toronto” or “CSI meets Road to Avonlea”. It’s about a detective with the Toronto Constabulary 9this season takes place in 1910) who uses modern forensic techniques to solve crimes. In its early days it was more straight turn-of-the-millennium detecting, but is getting progressively steampunky as we get further along the Age of Invention. He pioneers the use of “finger-marks” (fingerprints), uses ultra-violet light to detect blood, developed his own sonar buoy to find a shipwreck, invented his own fax machine, etc. He has also interacted with Winston Churchill, Arthur Conan Doyle, Thomas Edison, Jack London, Harry Houdini, Wild Bill Hickok and Annie Oakley, and a whole raft of others. He’s taken on (what appear to be) vampires, a Loch Ness-type monster, zombies, werewolves, UFOs, death rays, etc, and debunked them using science.

And, he’s Catholic.

That sounds cool! 🙂

I’m working my way through the second of a 3-volume anthology set of Steampunk short to novella length stories. Some of them are to my taste, some not. I prefer ones that aren’t too dark or beyond PG or PG-13 in content. These anthologies are a mixed bag in that regard.

And I still have plenty of classic works that inspired Steampunk to read. I really enjoy Verne, and I have The Difference Engine by Sterling & Gibson to read, plus Scott Westerfeld’s Leviathan series.

Anyone like to do steampunk crafting?
