One question: Why does manga books read backwards and why so much smoke covering on the cartoon characters? I know the reason yet why must that be put in books in the first place? Just asking.
Japanese is read from right to left whereas we read from left to right. Its a bit too hard to make manga exactly like a comic book so aside from translating it, english manga publishers generally leave manga intact.

Whats your avatar an image of?
Detective Conan, aka “Case Closed” as they unsuccessfully marketed it here in the States. The one is my avatar is the main character of that series before he gets turned back into a child.

Watchmen (the comic book that is) which in my opinion is the greatest work of fiction ever created, more than all the classics put together and what not.
I’ve never read the comic book but I did like the movie a lot so I should probably check it out.

Whats your avatar an image of? Strangely, I can’t get my forum avatar to work. I really like Evangelion. Its one of my favorite works of fiction ever, right up there with Watchmen (the comic book that is) which in my opinion is the greatest work of fiction ever created, more than all the classics put together and what not.

Also, lauraabarlow, whats your avatar of?
I got mine off of the avatar from catholic answers yet think this one came from Elfin Lied-my youngest was thinking that this came from Elfin Lied. I am still learning about manga and anime-my oldest participated in the cosplay the last 3 years at our local library. We actually brought a sewing machine and made his own costume from the anime Peace Maker Kurogane. Sewed together the kimono and the whole works-went really well. The fabric was quite expensive, though. One of my Japanese facebook friends I met while at Yakota befriended my son being that she is also a big anime fan. He has a picture of himself in that cosplay costume on his facebook profile-lol!!

To be more precise:

Japanese, like Chinese and Korean, can be written and read two ways: horizontally and vertically. Vertical texts are read starting from the rightmost column leftwards, from the top down. Horizontal writing is nowadays done in a left to right direction, though right to left was also once common.

Oh my gosh so many Evangelion fanboys… :o
I can actually sympathize. Then again, I’m a big, fat sucker for all that’s mainstream shounen. Naruto, Fairy Tail, and then you have the seinen versions found in Air Gear, Negima etc. I started out with Pokemon too though (as with at least 50% of anime fans of my generation.) From that though I went on to Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Shaman King, Flame of Recca etc.

I’d expound further on my own tastes but they’re er… rather awkward to mention on such a respectable religion forum (already, you can tell I’m giving too much info).

I love many anime characters-many has a positive message in its’ stories-of good winning over the bad-and of course-you see many of Japanese cultures infused in these stories-it is huge over thee yet pokemon along with baseball is still huge there.

Hey guys, I just finished watching End of Evangelion and I’m rather depressed. I really don’t like the ending because it was so damn depressing. There are major SPOILERS here so be warned.

IFirst of all, I found the sequence where everyone gets turned into tang very, very disturbing, more disturbing than even the infamous rape scene in Elfen Lied to be brutally honest. Whereas the latter made me cry and feel very, very angry at the perpetrator, the former just made me feel sick. I hate how the characters, even the minor ones got turned into tang just like that. But thats not the bad part. I like how the apocayptic maiden Rei tells Gendo to go screw himself and his death was oddly satisfying to be honest but I’d preferred that instead of everyone lying dead, unable to reconstitute themselves except for Shinji and Asuka, everyone actually did reconstitute himself. I’d also preferred it if the whole plan of turning everyone into tang was averted because ultimately, not averting it made the efforts of our heroes pointless. What do you people think? I think I’m going to watch the Rebuild movies now, they look really, really good especially since the original creator is behind them, plus, I hear the characters are more stable. The clip of Shinji saving Rei in 2.0 was just awesome.
I’ll tell you one thing: if you want to see a Shinji with slightly more backbone, read the manga. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is very infamous for having such a slow production schedule though, but at least he’s now currently nearing the end. I’m waiting as to how he would handle Third Impact and all that. 😃

First, I was only joking about the Pokemon fanboys being stupid thing Ok?🙂

To be honest, I don’t own a television or cable, I saw Clannad (english dub of course) and all the anime I’ve seen on the internet. I saw Clannad all on you tube until the videos were deleted. Its not copyright infrigement because neither I nor the uploader were distributing or making money off Clannad through piracy.

What do you think of Evangelion? I think its one of the greatest things I have ever seen. I don’t consider myself a fanboy in the sense that I think that if you don’t like it then you’re an idiot. I hated No Country for Old men for many of the reasons critics loved it. I certainly am a fan in the sense that I love the story, the narrative, the characters, etc… nothing wrong with that. I don’t obesses over it but I like its message.

But really, you don’t like Haruhi Suzumiya? Why? Sure, some jokes in the beginning did cross the line but Haruhi became much better as a person after Kyon called her out during the making of their film. Its my favorite anime after Evangelion. I love the characters especially Haruhi and Kyon, I love the premise, the setting, the narrative structure, etc… I didn’t know ANYTHING about Haruhi until I saw Disappearance, after which I started seeing the two seasons. Its really heartwarming in a subtle way. Even the music is awesome: youtube.com/watch?v=rtjrB3szKR4

i watched the movie akira recently great movie 👍 I also love Hayao Miyazaki works including princess mononoke and spirited away. As for tv shows I def would recommend cowboy bebop and gungrave

Ah, I just saw GunGrave on Hulu. After Trigun and the tone of the first episode, the rest of the show wasn’t what I expected. Still it was a very good show, fairly different and tragic.

What do you guys think of Fruits Basket? I watched the first thirteen episodes yesterday and I was really underwhelmed. It was really nothing special. The manga looks better but I don’t I’ll be reading it anytime soon.

Also, what do you guys think of Azumanga Daioh? I watched the first two episodes and they’re rather funny. I did chuckle a bit. Although really, I didn’t chuckle as much as when I heard the concept of some Neon Genesis fan fiction. Some people wrote a story where the Angels, instead of dying when defeated become shoulder Angels, you know, like the ones you used to see in cartoons with the good angel and the devil standing on a character’s shoulders teaching him how to do good or evil? That was certainly funny. Also, I saw a radio drama where the original characters from NGE come together after the series ended to find solutions to keep the series going and earn more money. Aside from some rather mild sexual talk in the beginning, its hilarious. Asuka proposes turning Evangelion into a sentai show, ala Power Rangers, Rei turning into a motor mouth and slapping Asuka is priceless and it all ends with a sound only anime with a capella version of the Beast: youtube.com/watch?v=nt4ldDExzhU The radio drama can be found here: youtube.com/watch?v=HvLfQSoVhrM

Also, does anyone recommend Durarara!!?

Oh no, no offense taken. It’s just really an indisputable fact that it was Pokemon that really started my road to otakuhood. XD

I just want to watch it… that’s it.TwT I don’t care how or why, I need more mushy romance with heavy doses of moe!! People say Clannad is teh ultimate treat of that! >w<

I acknowledge that Evangelion is good. It’s just too tragic and dramatic for my taste (as with a lot of mecha anime apparently). When I hear things about characters dying left and right, it kinda makes it hard for me to swallow.

Oh no, I like the franchise! I even have a crush on Mikuru (her archetype at least :p).

It’s Haruhi herself who scares, no terrifies me. shudders Just think… you barely tick her off just once and KABOOM! Universe is history. >_>;;;

Yeah, Evangleion is rather depressing. It made my then current depression worse for it:(. However, after watching Clannad and with help from Mary Immaculate and Her perception of life, I got better, much better. Now I just need to cure my insomnia, panic attacks and writers block. Hey do you know a place where I can buy all twelve volumes of Elfen Lied in english?

Anywya, I like Haruhi as a character. My favorite character though has to be Yuki. Not only because she is cute :o but she has a lot of character development and I pity her a lot. Have you seen Disappearance? Its one of my favorite films ever; in fact, I saw the movie first without knowing anything about Haruhi Suzumiya and it was a very, very pleasant experience. The ending was especially good. Next to Evangleion, its my favorite anime and its certainly in the top ten list of my favorite works of fiction. I am John Smith. That line recieved a standing ovation at some screening! Speaking of Yuki and moe, just watch this for moe overload. Its called yukispin: youtube.com/watch?v=BHZmor8eadU

I’ve just started watching Bleach and I’m actually loving it. I especially love Ichigo. He is a bit of a jerk but he is at the same time extremely likeable and quirky.

Almost finished Elfen Lied, jsut 3 more episodes/ Can’t wait to read the manga to finish the full story.

How far have you gotten in Bleach so far? Fair warning, you might want to just skip the filler material altogether. :o

I watched like 14 episodes in one day! I need to watch episode 15 and the rest of season 1now. Now for 300+ more episodes to watch with the ast 3 episodes of Elfen Lied and the OVA of Ah! My Goddess to boot. Man, I’ve become addicted to anime. I’ve even started watching Azumnaga Daioh and though I’m only on the first two episodes and well aware that its just a comedy series, I love it. Cooking is so fun, cooking is so fun, now its time to take a break and see what we have done! Yay! An apple pie! ‘tastes pie and promptly spits it out out of shame for making such an abomination’.

Anyway, I also saw a little bit of FLCL and though it sounds… interesting. A woman must defeat a bunch of humongous mecha by beating the hell out of some twelve year old out of whose head the robots come out. Yep, this is material out of which legends are made of!

Anyway, jokes aside, I like Bleach and am also interested in seeing Code Geass for its quirky premise. I also like Mazinger Zeta and Grendizer, you know, those old anime from the seventies that evey ten year old in Europe was obsessed about? My dad loved those shows and he had great fun watching some old italian dubs with me recently (with a really, REALLY goofy japanese series called Megaloman. No really, its worse than than Turboman: youtube.com/watch?v=QKPrpP9ySFs youtube.com/watch?v=sZb9PAQGKL0 and though I’m not interested in them, I still like them.

Heres the italian opening theme for Mazinger Zeta (Malta didn’t have cable English channels in the seventies so they had to do with Italian channels which sometimes showed anime. All in black and white too:rolleyes:. In Italy, their theme songs instead of being cut to make way for time just keep on running until the song ends. And Mazinger’s theme is awesome: youtube.com/watch?v=bMI8RCVXsno Another anime my dad loved was Tiger Mask or Tiger Man in Italy. His story was ripped off, er, I mean payed homage to in video games like Tekken. The theme song is cheesy but very catchy: youtube.com/watch?v=Ezz6PnQOohU&feature=related

Any thoughts on the Spring season?

Fate/Zero is my #1, but I’m also enjoying Accel World and Dusk Maiden of Amnesia. Sakamichi no Apollon is also definitely worth a look.

Have to see what those are about chapman:).

What do the rest of you think of Elfen Lied? I hear the manga isn’t that good but in my opinion, the anime is a masterpiece, one of my favortie works of fiction, jsut like Neon Genesis Evangelion. I only need to watch the last 3 episodes now to finish the series (and yes, I saw the OVA episode 10.5 and it was very funny and charming. Yuka’s face as her hair literally twisted and turned in jealousy was priceless.

Yesterday, I think I watched like thirty episodes of Bleach. Yes, thirty. I spent my entire time from 1 o’clock noon to 4 o’oclock in the morning watching nothing but Bleach until I reached episode 56. Today I finished the soul society arc. Can’t wait to see what happens next but man, I need a break. Rebuke me all you want, it won’t happen again but Bleach was surprisingly a good story. Its original, tales chances, can be shocking, the fight scenes feel like actual fights and makes you feel like you’re the one getting stabbed and overall, the experience was very pleasant. Some will complain that a whole arc spanning 49 (actually 47 if you remove those two pointless filler episodes with that Don BWAHAHAHAHAHA!! Kanonji and Ichigo’s sisters) episodes is too long but in bleach I felt that it made the overall experience better as it made us feel the toll and the length which the journey had o the characters and on the soul society. I don’t like how Chad, Orihime, Uryu and Ganju didn’t contribute so much to rescuing Rukia and I certainly didn’t like how we didn’t see much or Uryu and Orihime but I still enjoyed seeing all these characters develop and I enjoyed their respective stories and flashbacks. ALL the characters are interesting, especially Ichigo. I just love the guy and though he can be a jerk, he’s a nice jerk and very well written character in my opinion.
