Watched the first four episodes of Higurashi. They were good, very good and I was honestly creeped out theyw ere that scary. No jump scares, just pure terror like the exorcist. Must watch what on earth is going to happen.

Well, guys, if you’re not watching Sakamichi no Apollon (aka Kids on the Slope), I’d definitely recommend it. Great anime about some high school students forming a jazz band in 1960s Japan–but that doesn’t really capture the full story. It’s directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and has music by Yoko Kanno–who are both among the best in their fields (they’ve previously done Macross Plus and Cowboy Bebop).

But what makes this particularly worth a mention here is that two of the main characters are Christians, and that the show has a respectful treatment of the subject (though it’s not a discussion of doctrine or dogma, this show is about jazz music and the people who play it).

Sounds interesti… OH MY GOSH YOKO KANNO MADE THE SOUNDTRACK??? MUSTWATCH!

To be honest ironchapman, I’m not very interested in it:o. I’ll check it out but right now, I’m going to stick with two anime series, Higurashi no naku koro ni and FullMetal Alchemsit brotherhood. I’ll check it out after finishing those two. It’ll tke me what, a maximum of ten days to finish both together? If I wake up very early, I think I’d finish all 46 episode of FullMetal in a day or two!

My teenage son wanted me to say that he thinks you are awesome being that he is also a big fan of FullMetal series. Just saying 🙂

Me? Awesome? Shucks, nobody ever compliments me! When I talk about anime to my sister, she just grabs a a huge piece of wood and starts beating me over the head with it. Other times, just kicks me in the head or forces me to eat dry bread until I can’t breathe and pass out. Kids these days:shrug:.

Nah, just kidding, my sister loves me:D, although I am going to play a MASSIVE prank on her. She’s leaving with her classmates to London for like five days and with help from my dad and mum, I’m going to fill her room with balloons and give her something to gawk about when she comes back. She’s going to be flabbergasted with surprise:D. Also, I downloaded Kira’s laugh on CD and will play it over and over again just to annoy her and my parents because I love pranking people:rolleyes:.

Tell your son that I’d like to meet him someday and that the Blessed Mother may bless him and your family. Full Metal can actually be seen for free on you tube, that is, if you’re in America:rolleyes:. Looks like I’m going to have to buy the DVD. Can’t wait to visit the airport next week as I want to read more manga. While I prefer the narrative style of comics, manga has its own charm and storytelling tactics.

You are beyond awesome. I have considered downloading Kira’s laugh to annoy my younger sister, but I have never done it. That… With the balloons, that is perfect. You are beyond awesome. 😃 By the way, you can find Full Metal on other websites too. Not just Youtube. I do not think I have ever watched anime on Youtube… And manga is fun. I do not mind comics, but I prefer manga. Mostly because I am used to it, so the small panels of comics and the different reading direction confuses me now. XD

Thanks! Can’t wait to go to the airport though. I’ll miss my sister during those five days but I can’t wait to getto the airport book shop: they have some manga there. I’ll take some pictures and maybe post them here if my sister approves. I might even upload a video as I definitely want to catch her reaction when she comes back home at 1 in the morning and finds she ahs no place to sleep. Yep, I may be awesome but I am also absolutely utterly cruel…

Kira’s laugh. For 10 minutes. Oh my gosh. You are awesomely cruel. That sounds like it would be exciting. It is fun to go where manga is. It would be very cool if you could post pictures. Or a video. Your prank is perfect. XD

-Typed by her son again. I should get an account on here… But I have not used CA until my mom noticed this anime thread-

When I’ll be helping my sister pop all those ballons, I’ll be playing omnious latin chanting in the background all the whole crying ‘DELETE!’ for every baloon I pop. My sster will think I’ve lost it!

My dad, who loves anime himself and really enjoys it watched the first two episode Higurashi no naku Koro ni and was DESPERATE to see what happened.

AH, ANIME & MANGA! I used to love it so much, I used to voraciously eat up all of the info about the industry and it’s people that I could. I’ve definitely outgrown it a bit though. Also I don’t have time to delve into it like I used to. Was a major fan of the works of Rumiko Takahashi and the anime based on her stuff, in fact InuYasha is what got me hooked on anime.

I also like Devil Hunter Yohko. Most of the anime I’ve tried to watch I never actually finished, either because I found something else I like better, or because I got bored with it, didn’t like it that much, etc. I’ve seen at various times Full Metal Panic, Ninja Scroll (actually have the poster hanging on my wall), Chobits, Samurai Champloo, Lupin the III, Sakura Diaries, Dragon Ball (original), Demon City Shinjuku, Elfen Lied, Wolf’s Rain, the list goes on and on. I’ve read even more manga, coming close to finishing a few. I really do have to get back to it at some point. It would be nice for me. I’ve been out of the loop way too much and anime that were new 4 years ago that are now must-watch classics I still haven’t seen. 😦

Before I see FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood, I’m watching Higurashi and Ah! My Goddess. I watched the frist episode of the OVA and I found out something. Despite me being all jumpy and cranky recently because of my insomnia, I LOVED Ah! My Goddess. Belldandy reminds me of someone special, you know who it is:

http://198.62.75.1/www1/apparitions/http:/miracm~1.jpg

Yep, Belldandy reminds me so much of the Virgin Mary. Like her, she’s kind, loving, innocent and is absolutely dedicated towards those who love her. I found out something else: five episodes are just not enough for me. I’m watching the 2005 series and tis sequel lights of Fancy (by the way, the whole FoF series is available on you tube for free by FUNimation!) plus the OVA’s.

I like how the romance isn’t crude at all. There are no superficial ways in which the relationship develops, both Keiichi and Belldandy have feelings for each other but find it difficult to express their feelings fully and really, both characters are just so much fun to watch as they have so much chemistry between each other. Also, Keiichi putting his arm around Belldandy’s shoulder at the end of episode 1 of the OVA was one of the sweetest things I have ever seen. I’m dead serious, its can make anybody have sweet dreams and recover after watching Evangelion.

By the way, Keiichi actually dies. It may sound like a spoiler but it isn’t. He dies very early on in the series, like, 14 episodes in. Just saying;).

Ok, I kid, I’m just joking, Keiichi doesn’t die either in the first season or in the second, I was jsut messing with you people!

Japanese have a fascination with gore for some reason. There is a game called “Corpse Party” which is available in the West based on a comic about a group of kids who get caught up in a haunted school and get slaughtered one by one. One of the characters who dies is 8 years old. For some reason this sort of almost sado-masochistic trend runs through much of anime. In one of the Higurashi spin offs a child of 7 or 8 is also strangled to death as is everyone else, although the story ends up that they did not die or it resets itself. The anime Mirai Nikki also has numerous deaths including one child. I haven’t seen these but read the descriptions and it’s not my cup of tea.

There is also a live action movie of Higurashi Koro Ni and two previous films called Battle Royale where high school kids in uniforms have to kill each other. 😦

I’ll never understand Japan.

Not meaning to take you as a bad guy but the west also has a fascination with violence , with ****** films like the Friday the 13th series, Hostel, Manhunt (the video game), slash fics dark humor and, you know, abortion. It also has a fascination with unhealthy sex, and sex between children too sometimes (oh Stephen King, I love your works but what the hell were you thinking putting an underage sex scene in It??? AfterI read that bit on wikipedia, I died a little inside). It isn’t simply Japan, its people who are obssessed with violence. True, in Japan, a kid seeing some blood like what is shown in Bleach is acceptable and in my opinion, it is OK for a kid to see some bloody violence, as long as it is not over the top. Japanse also have a diffirent view of nudity. If a person is shown naked in an anime, it isn’t necessarilly depicted as sexual in nature so much as showing how vulnerable this person is.

Higurashi is NOT a story about violence and gore. It angers me a lot when people assume that just because a work of fiction has blood and gore then it means that that work is notihng but a gore fest made only to satisfy satanists with their bloodlust. Elfen Lied has gore and blood but it isn’t as over the top gory as its usually made out to be and it is only used to show the horrible things our bleoved characters have to pass through. When I saw Elfen Lied, I cried not because of the violence but because I cared for these sympathethic and complex characters. Lucy may have been a murderer but she doesn’t enjoy what she does and feels repentance at the trouble she caused. The characters in a Song of Ice and Fire are flawed and do morally gray decisions but that doesn’t mean they’re unlikeable, far from it. A work should be judged on its characters and not on the level of gore.

I just watched episodes episodes 110 to 143 of Bleach, effectively finishing the Arrancar Invasion arc and, it wasn’t bad. It was good. There were a lot of heartwarming moments and the moment between Tatsuke and Ichigo was very sad. I hated the useless filler episodes as they wated my time and contributed nothing to the story, although the one where Toshiro helps Karin win a football amtch and show her that he’s a soul reaper was a good episode and the bit where Ikkaku beats an entire kendo club at a competition was hilarious. I really loved the bit between Orihime and Ichigo towards the end of the arc and it made me sad. The story may have its flaws but ultiamtely, I still enjoyed it and had a lot of fun except with those filler episodes. And yes, I skipped the bount arc and read its sypnosis on the Bleach wiki.

Bought the second volume of One Piece today as the bookstore didn’t have the first one. I wanted to see what the fuss is all about and its interesting. The art is very beautiful for a manga and I like Luffy as a character. However, and this is a problem I’ve experienced with the FullMetal Alchemsit manga, the fight scenes are just a mess. Half the time, I don’t know whats going on because the panels are so jumbled up and its not made clear exactly how one event got to the enxt. One panel shows a character talking, the other one suddenly shows a dust cloud without any hint that a punch or a kick was made in order to bring it. Its a pity because as I’ve said, the art in One Piece is BEAUTIFUL.

I also bought a manga called Vampire Knight. I haven’t read it yet but it looked interesting… and then I found out that it was shojo. I love some shojo stories like Haruhi Suzumiya and somewhat like Candy Candy because my dad loved it but I’m scared that I’m going to read through Japan’s version of Twilight:eek:. No, please no, anything but that, I’d rather see this: youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0

You will. Sadly, you will. Granted, it’s a little bit better than Twilight in terms of portraying Vampires (no sparkling, thank God). I would add Yuuki has a little bit more character to her than Bella.

Still, it’s a big, fat bishie-fest full of fan-girl magnets that leave the rest of us poor men wishing that-

Sister: Ara, ara nii-san… do I hear disrespect towards the great Kaname-sama? -.-

I’ll diss that incestuous blood sucker as much I-!? barely repels rain of knives with magic barrier

Hoho! Is that how you’re gonna play huh? D8<

Sister: You shall not speak of Kaname-sama in that manner!! DX

BlazBlue music plays

Announcer: The Wheel of Fate is Turning! Rebel 1! ACTION!

Culture has a huge point to play in that.

The reason to put it bluntly is one their original ‘shows’ they had where puppet shows with over the top facial expressions. This coupled with the extreme discipline they practice even at the youngest age makes many things we see as gross or over the top they see as quaint and funny.

The reason is the average person would never dream of doing those things in any kind of company. Girls don’t punch men for looking at them sidewise and men don’t noes bleed just because they see some skin. Those are over exaggerated for a reason because it doesn’t happen.

different culture different mindset.

I’d kill to have half the students in school age to behave like the Japanese over here in Canada.

I’d do anything short of selling my soul to have this entire universe manga-fied (complete with guys like me getting crazy magic/martial arts powers). 😛

Hey LW, what do you think of Bleach, One Piece and Naruto? I hear the last one is pretty bad to be honest.
