Who loves anime here?

Not meaning to be rude but, whats with Japan and the Yuri genre? Is the yuri genre really about lesbian relationships or is it just about girls being friends? I hear a certain anime called Maria Sama-Ga-Miteru really, really isn’t about lesbian relationships so much as it is about deep girl friendships. In fact, only two girls were actually revealed to be lesbians and one of them didn’t want to take things too far and became a nun. Seriously, what do you guys think? I hate how TV Tropes puts the trope ‘Hide your Lesbians’ (which means not giving a canonically gay ‘couple’ a resolution in the story) on the page while always saying how none of the girls are lesbians and etc… What do you guys think? I hate it how few deep and affectionate relationships are shown to be purely platonic and in no way implied to be homosexual nowadays; Tatsuke and Orihime are an example of a good old friendship. Sorry for the rant but its been bothering me lately.

I watched the first episode of Lucky Star and, meh, I’m not interested in it. I’m not interested in watching a show full of pointless conversations so I’ll be dropping it.

Yuri is about positive portrayals of lesbianism, my friend.

Lucky Star tends to promote flat-chestedness and stereotypes hence me not watching it anymore.

You kow, I’m sorry to go off topic again but, I just spoke about the perversions found in the Yuri genre; I was surprized that Japan does not recognize same sex marriage as legal at all. I always knew the Japanese had a strong sense of family but not like this. Confucuis is the greatest non-catholic philosopher ever, with Jesus and Mary being the greatest of course. He was so good that though the Catholic Church absolutely utterly condemend the Enlightenment and Protestantism for their perversions, it published his books because they were that good. To the Japanese, well done:). Sure, Japan may have a lot of faults and immorality but at least its not the West.

Anyway, already wathced episodes 1 to 18 of Higurashi no naku koro ni and I’m loving it. Its sad yes, and even depressing buts its also very heartwarming and funny. Its not despair inducing like Evangelion, its very, very good. I wish I was as good an author as all these anime writers though. I’d love to finish my book someday with its introduction, development, turning point, climax, conclusion and darkness. Well, I’m off.
 
As irony would have it I was checking this site while waiting for the opening of full metal panic to finish so I could get on with the series.
 
What do you guys think of Bokurano? I hear its like Neon Genesis Evangelion but even more depressing. Thats… beyond the impossible. Although let me make it clear: just because a work is ‘depressing’ or ‘sad’ doesn’t mean its good. If a story is a masterpiece because its characters all have massive faults in some way and are all getting killed off one by one because you know, death is sad, then films like Friday the 13th, I spit on your grave, the last house on the left and really, the majority of rubbish Wes Craven spewed out, they’d be considered the. greatest. movies. EVER. And that is of course stupid because those movies are so bloody terrible they make you want to tear your eyes off in frustration. If CLANNAD SPOILER was an excellent anime until the ending, where everyone’s death was reset so Tomoya could get his just reward and live a happy life, effectively giving this anime a happy ending, then it would have become a terrible anime. And it isn’t. The real ending with the reset button made more sense to me because Tomoya did a lot of good in the world and for him to relive his life with Nagisa and Ushio happily meant a lot to me. It was an excellent ending to an already excellent anime. SPOILERS END HERE.

Likewise, I love Higurashi no naku Koro ni, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Elfen Lied etc… not because they are indeed sad but because I love the characters, I love seeing them pass through life, I love seeing them get over their problems, I love seeing them spend their time having fun with each other but if all a show consisted was them having fun with no or insignificant conflict, it’d give me no reason to care for these characters. As Orson Scott Card said, a character driven story should focus on a character who wants to better his current state of life. Therefore, we have Shinji finding out more about the meaning of life and protecting the people and town he loves, we have Keeichi caring for his friends, we have Kouta and Yuka taking care of Nyu, with Lucy trying to spit out her apology to Kouta, etc… A good story doesn’t have to have a villain but it needs some form of conflict. A show doesn’t need and should never be like the terrible Full House which was the story of family in picture frames. No issues, no real dilemmas, the majority of problems were just inconveniences and the writing was too manipulative with some corny music playing over when one of the girls asked her dad about their dead mom for example. Compare such a scene from Full House to a scene from CLANNAD: After Story when Tomoya talks to Ushio about her mother. That scene was thousands of times much better than all of Full House combined.

I love it. It has so many ways to show and express feelings. I think anime is one of the better meduims to depict a story, the other better ones being comic books (the American comic book that is. Manga’s style is so limited), video games and literature.

I just finished the first season of Higurashi no naku koro ni and the last episode was AWESOME. Wow, what a great ending for a season. Now to watch Higurashi no naku koro ni Kai to finish the story.

Currently Japan doesn’t recognize domestic same-sex marriages, it does, however, recognize marriages performed in countries where it’s legal. The prevailing attitude is mostly (as I understand it) as long as you “pay your debt to society” (ie. marry and have children) what you do elsewhere is your business. although this is changing.
I always knew the Japanese had a strong sense of family but not like this. Confucuis is the greatest non-catholic philosopher ever, with Jesus and Mary being the greatest of course.

Actually, according to wikipedia, it does not: Articles 731-737 of the Japanese Civil Code restrict marriage to opposite-sex unions. Same-sex couples are not able to marry, and same-sex couples are not granted rights derived from marriage. Also same-sex marriages performed abroad are not legally recognized in Japan and bi-national same-sex couples cannot obtain a visa for the foreign partner based on their relationship.

I know, but he still had an influence on Japanese culture and while I may not apreciate SOME of them with their open infatuation for little girls (or Lolicon. Not that it wasn’t common before in the west. Although to be honest, if animated nudity of children is shown for the sake of art, I don’t view it as wrong. Examples include the scene after Lucy and Kouta play in a stream in an episode of Elfen Lied and of course, child birth. Here, it isn’t sexual, its just art. The japanese view nudity diffirently then we d’; to them, its a sign of vulnerability), I love the Japanese and their culture. Not meaning to sound disrespectful but other than Catholicism, Confuscianism is the only religion or philosophy in the world that I truly respect and view as good. Just saying.

Also, sorry to ask again but what do you guys think of Bokurano? Also, what do you guys think of Magical Girl lyrical Nanoha or something?I hear it has very good fight scenes but I really care for the characters. Is the story good?
 
Just finished both seasons of Higurashi and they were AWESOME. After Elfen Lied, its the only other anime that I can say really made me cry and but happy at the same time. Well, I’m taking a break for a few days from anime and after that, I’m watching Durarara!!
 
Forget my last comment, Higurashi no naku koro ni is one of the greatest anime I have ever seen. I wish I could read and play the manga and the visual novels but sadly, I don’t know if they are translate din english or not. Either way, the anime is one of my favorites and it really, really made me think and cry. I just wish I had more friends like Mion, Shion, Rena, Rika, Satoko and Keeichi:(.

Watched the first episode of Durarara!! Its interesting and will keep on watching it. However, I just watched the first three episodes of Hayate the Combat butler and while I wouldn’t call the jokes hilarious, they did make me smile and I love the characters and want to see how they pass through the story. Going to check out Puella Magi Madoka Magica to see what its about.

Yes, me too… that is something (and the coloring of the books) that I dislike in mainstream North American comics. I think that giving extra detail to that part and the nose, but not to the rest of the drawing (and the black outlines) is what gives out that effect. I’ve seen concept art and some western comics and manga that manage to draw lips without doing that, and it looks good.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica >>> I’m in episode 5.
Squid Girl >>> I’m in episode 2

I want to see Darker than Black (the OST’s were composed by some of my favourite Japanese musicians, Yoko Kanno and Yasushi Ishii) and Durara. Those series seem interesting.

For me, a good example of that would be some of Jo Chen’s art of Runaways. The characters look like they’re straight out of a Square-Enix game.

Now if only they had the entire series drawn that way. I’ll definitely buy it alongside manga. >w<
