Say LW, what do you think of Rurouni Kenshin? Its one of the msot famous shonen manga and anime EVER and its multiple demographic appeal was LEGENDARY.

Oh yeah, I LOVE it! My favorite arcs in the anime were the one with the Black Knights and the other when Kenshin was blind.

Also, do you people recommend Macross Frontier?

I don’t know about recommend but I have been interested.

Then again, my reason more has to do with cute stuff… like this.

Well, I’m taking a look at the Summer season’s shows. Not a lot I like, but there are a few titles I’ll be trying to accompany Accel World. I’ll be looking at Kokoro Connect, Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita, Utakoi, PES: Peace Eco Smile (good for a 3 min series), Chitose Get You (definitely much more of a parody of a naive girl’s hopes rather than anything serious), and I’ll probably be trying some others.

I haven’t seen the Black Knights arc. I only saw some other stand alone episodes of Kenshin after the Kyoto arc was finished because frankly, I don’t like fantasy mixing up with the Kenshin universe which is supposed to be more realistic (realistic by anime standards anyway). I loved the episode where the girls all go out and the one where Kenshin accidently proposes to Kaoru . That was the first episode my dad saw of Kenshina and he loved it. My favorite arc was the Kyoto arc; it made me put Kenshin as my third most favorite anime ever, behind Evangelion and Elfen Lied, and above Higurahsi and Hayate no Gotoku. Can’t wait to read the manga.

I actually put that Nyan Nyan song on a cd loop for 80 minutes un order to help me sleep. It isn’t working very well right now because frankly, I’m so insomniac I’m sleeping at times like 5 am to even 7 am and waking up at 3 pm. Its driving me crazy believe me.

I’m watching Monster right now after reading 20th Century Boys which was AWESOME. However, I’m fincing it difficult to keep on watching, mostly because of the fact it has 70+ episodes. I want to watch it but lately I’ve been a bit down so I need something to pique my interest. SO, ehre is a list of anime that I want to watch or at least catch my interest:

Macross Frontier.
Full Metal Panic!
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.
Baccano!
Durarara!!
Naoki Urasawa’s Monster.
Cowboy Bebop.
Samurai Champloo.

By the way, you can see a lot of these anime on a website called nwanime.com. It is so conveneint but warning though, it only mostly has english subbed versions and you may need to install veohweb player.

Anyway, I need something interesting but not too depressing but which still has conflict and some level of tension, something likeHayate no Gotoku, Elfen lied, Rurouni Kenshin, Clannad, Kanon, Haruhi Suzumiya, and NOT something like Evangelion, Death Note or even Higurashi which I LOVE. In order to watch Monster, I need, comedy. Real comedy. And to be honest, I watched someclips from Full Metal Panic and they made me laugh out loud. Also, some anime that I don’t want to see:

Code Geass. Unlike Death Note which left you with the option of either rooting for Light or not, Code Geass sort of looks like it expects you to root for Lelouch who sounds like an evil sort of person. I heard everyone’s acting is hammy in this anime too and tohugh the premise sounds interesting, I don’t want to see it for my own personal tastes and morals.

The rest of Bleach Yeah, I changed my mind on Bleach. Though it IS better than most shonen anime and manga in my opinion, nothing can beat Rurouni Kenshin and frankly, I always knew that Bleach had a horrible narrative structure.

For better or worse Toriyama gives the final say over what canon and what’s not in his franchises.In the case of the latter though it’s very peculiar how he does’nt seem to care that much Dragon ball even though it’s undisputably his most lucrative creation he just easily put it behind in his past and moved on to his next story (but with DB staying on him like a curse just like Lucas and Star Wars) even though it very clearly has the capacity to expand and go further which is what SSOOOOO many desire. Dragonball was highly popular, yes, but as we all know popular manga series are a blessing for its fans while being a virtual Hell for its creators. I mean, it was published in Weekly Shonen Jump (home to many other series from the past and present like Naruto, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh, Shaman King, Bleach, Death Note, Hikaru no Go, I’s, Bobobobo-Bobobo, Hell Teacher Nūbē, Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen Mae Hashutsujo, Sket Dance, Eyeshield 21, The Prince of Tennis, Fist of the North Star, Nurarihyon no Mago, Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Slam Dunk, Gintama, etc.). Note the word Weekly in there.

Manga-ka who publish their works in weekly anthologies like Weekly Jump literally live such painfully perpetually busy lives that they can only take a break from manual labor during certain holidays (when the magazines themselves take a rest from publication; i.e. New Year). Has anyone of you ever had any experience writing a comic strip? That’s the same task manga-ka in weekly magazines have to face: they (and their assistants) have to think of and draw an average of 20 or more page’s worth of strips - all equivalent to a single chapter - and get it to their editor for proofreading and further corrections and have it published when everything is sorted out within the space of a single week, rinse and repeat. The advent of digital software have made things a lot easier, but back in the old days when one relied only on ink, pen, screentone, and one’s own hands and ingenuity to make a strip…yeah. (Hey, I should know, that’s exactly what I’m studying right now. )

We can’t blame Toriyama: he had worked on Dragonball for about eleven years (1984-1995). The work apparently took such a toll on him that he actually quit making long-running series in Dragonball’s wake.

So yeah, being a manga-ka is hard work. Simply getting your work published isn’t enough: it gotta be popular for it to continue running, otherwise you will be forced to cancel it. Weekly Jump is actually infamous in this regard: it operates under a ratings system of sorts, where the readers vote (via questionnaires) for their favorite series. Series which do not fare well or which plummet in popularity are invariably canceled, with the creators being given a little time to ‘wrap up’ their stories. For manga-ka who plan on making a long-running series, this is literally a death sentence: many an axed series in Weekly Jump are actually classic textbook examples of highly-contrived endings, leaving unresolved plot points. (Read: Shaman King, the second of Hiroyuki Takei’s three works in Weekly Jump, all of which were cancelled - the other two are Butsu Zone, and Jumbor Barutronica.)

This phenomenon was actually lampooned in a chapter of Gag Manga Biyori, originally published in Weekly Jump’s (now-defunct) sister publication, Monthly Jump called Swordmaster Yamato. (The other thing that was poked fun at was the occurrence of typos in manga in general and weekly anthologies in particular - many of them unintentionally humorous, like Nani wo suru da).

I watched a couple of episodes of Full Metal Panic and I’m loving it. It is HILARIOUS when it wants to be funny and rather melancholnic. It makes me feel the same way Hayate no Gotoku made me feel although less on the seet side and more on the funny side. I want to see more of it. And believe me when I say its funny, it really is. There was a scene where Sasouke give Kaname a couple of earrings which have a flashbang or something so that she’d protect herself if he isn’t present. I won’t spoil anything but that scene killed me.

The cancellation of Double Arts was pretty odd, yeah: a lot of people in the internet have asked (and are asking) why it was cancelled, but no definite answer as of yet. Of course, there are other factors in a series being cancelled than just lack of popularity, and quite a number of people do think that Double Arts was quite good enough.

BTW, here are the usual signs of a series being cancelled:

1.) Highly-contrived, ‘unnatural’ endings. This is because: (1) it is the management who decides whether and when to ax a series - the creator has no choice but to comply; (2) the pressure could lead the creators to lose their motivation and adopt a “okay fine, let’s end this as fast as we can” mentality, which of course leads to a decrease in quality, compounded by the fact that the story has to be finished no matter what within a given number of pages.
2.) Unresolved plot points. Very often, the slapdash nature of a concluding series (cf. above) could even lead to plot holes and contradictions.
3.) Whereas a series’ ending would normally be announced (something to the effect of “next week is the final chapter,” etc.), axed series do not, which adds to the ‘ending abruptly’ feeling. In fact, it would almost seem that the management no longer cares about it but just continues to publish it as courtesy to give a ‘proper’ closure.
4.) Some series might end with the words “End of Part 1,” (第一部 完) only in this case, there is almost always no Part 2 in sight.

There are times when a series’ cancellation is brought about by factors such as trouble between the management and a creator. In such cases, what usually happens is:

1.) The series will invariably end abruptly. The creator will not be even given time to finish, the words “thank you very much for reading” (ご愛読ありがとうございました) or something along those lines will just be tacked on at the end.
2.) The series will suddenly disappear, with an ‘official announcement’ from the management appearing on a later issue or on the magazine’s website.
3.) The series will still be listed in the table of contents, but another work (usually the entries in a manga competition hosted by the same magazine; in Jump’s case, this would be either or the Tezuka Award**Akatsuka Award) in place of the series in question will be published as filler.
4.) The worst-case scenario involves a damnatio memoriae of sorts: the series would be gone with no word whatsoever from the management, as if it didn’t even exist.

So yeah, I’ve talked about how things go in Weekly Jump. The difficult part about getting your series cancelled there is that, manga-ka who get their work published in this magazine make an exclusive contract with the company (Shueisha), which basically means that they could not transfer into other companies before the contract expires.

Now, how about other companies?

Shonen Champion (Akita Shoten): Adopts a ratings system similar to Jump, combined with tankoubon sales. Champion is overall much stricter than Jump when it comes to cancellation: the creator will never be even given time to finish the story. When the story could not be wrapped up within a week or two (equals one to two issues) after the decision, the series will be ended with the words “End of Part 1.”

Shonen Sunday (Shogakukan): Was comparatively loose about cancellation when compared to other companies: relatively few works got cancelled in Sunday and cancelled authors have the choice of moving to other publications by the same company. By the 2000s, however, there has been an increase of cancellations after the general decrease in manga anthology sales. Furthermore, Sunday has come under some criticism during the 2000s because of perceived favoritism, with veterans being favored over newcomers, though this trend is changing.

Shonen Magazine (Kodansha): Perhaps the most lenient and welcoming of the four magazines I’ve named: Magazine was the traditional refuge of cancelled authors from other companies (Kōji Kumeta of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei fame is an example: he first worked in Sunday up to Katte ni Kaizō and then moved to Magazine - publishing Zetsubou-Sensei and now Joshiraku in collaboration with Yasu), although like Sunday, there have been an increase in cancellations starting from the last decade. The editorial management of Magazine also has more say in matters when compared to other companies: on the negative side this means that there are quite a number of series in Magazine which were made under the direction of the management - which does not automatically guarantee that it would be a hit with the readers.

Also, Karin sounds interesting. I hear the romance is well done. I’m going to watch it to see if its appropriate for my sister. I may be a boy and I may love dark stuff but I love romance in stories as long as it is done well. One of Harry Potter’s faults was how rushed and sudden his love for Jinny was.It literally came out of nowhere in the SIXTH book and didn’t affect the the major plot of the rest of the series at all or in a very small way if you want. A good romance should have interesting characters; it shouldn’tbe rushed and should devleop naturally though the characters getting interested in each other, enjoying each other’s quirks and having an actual reason to want to stay together forever. Hell, for a PERFECT example of this trope in action, just watch Clannad; it’s like the greatest love story I have ever seen and the relationship of the official couple is really, really mature and very, very well done. Sure, there are SOME ‘rude’ jokes but they are very tame and innocent unlike so many gross out romantic comedies in american cinema.

I was only talking about Lucky Star. I haven’t watched Gintama much. I like Lucky Star because I think it does anime parody right.
