You know, even though I still have to finish the last 17 or so chapters of 20th century boys (named 21st century boys), I expected much more out of it. Honestly, 20th Centtury boys waspretty underwhelming. Not to say it was bad although the characters weren’t intersting at all and evne annoying and the plot made absolutely no sense at all.
NAH! Just kidding! Honestly, 20th Century boys is a bloody masterpiece and one of the greatest thigns I have ever read in my entire bloody life. I literally spent my time from 11 o’clock at night to 11 in the morning reading nothing but chapters 137 to 242 of 20th century boys, it was THAT good. Oh my gosh, I mean, wow, just wow.
This may be a SPOILER!!! but for such a cynical series with MANY people dying, it sure had an idealistic message and a GREAT ending, at least as chapter 243 showed right now.
I literally spent the last week or two reading nothing but Hayate the Combat Butler and 20th Century boys. That was one of the most entertaining weeks I’ve ever had. If you think that just by reading a Song of Ice and Fire and Watchmen you’ve experienced everything that is good about literature, THINK AGAIN.
My favorite characters are Kenji, Shogun, Kanna and those manganaka. My LEAST favorite, because of personal preference is that smug bastard with the long hair who pushed Kiriko’s fiancee to his death whose name I don’t recall because it was never mentioned. I HAAAAATTTTTTEEEEE that character. Hate him with a passion. His villainous breakdown was so satisfying in the end.

I should warn you that not a lot of people are fans of the F/SN anime. I am though. As much as UBW has a lot of points in the animation department, I cannot and will not tolerate Ilya-cide.

I finished reading the rest of 20th Century boys. Its been a few hours but, I’m actually almost crying. I never cried whilst reading the book itself but now I am, not because of the story but because of the manga itself. Its incredible, it is truly, truly incredible how such a book can even exist. How? Why? How is it possible that such a BRIALLIANT book can even exist? It is so brilliant, so well written, so much fun to read, with such GREAT characters and art that, well, I give up. I’m never reading another book and novel nor am I watching another anime ever again. 20th Century boys makes Watchmen look like it was written by a five year old. Thats right. For me to say that a work is even better than Watchmen takes UTTER talent. Naoki Urasawa, you are the Alan Moore of manga, the Shakespeare of Japan, the Dante of Asia. You’re manga was the greatest novel I have ever read in my entire bloody life and for something to be better than Watchmen in every way is beyond the impossible.
In fact, 20th Century boys is so well written it takes good writing and obliterates it to a pulp. I have never seen a book so well drawn, easy to understand, depressing, idealistic, subtle, impactful, engaging and emotional since a Song of Ice and Fire. This people is the highest anyone has ever reached in good writing. THIS is the greatest work of fiction ever created, no doubt about it, and the greatest story told by men. If ANYTHING is better than 20th Century boys, I think the cosmos would elope on themselvees and the world would end. Oh my gosh, I know I’m being melodramatic and all but I jsut couln’t resist praising this manga. Read it, just go to the story, buy volumes 1 and 2 and just read it. This sin’t a recommendation, I COMMAND everone here to read 20th Century Boys.
BTW, I’m not serious on giving up on anime. I still want to read what happens in Hayate no Gotoku next you know and that work is brilliant. Going to watch Monster and Code Geass next.

I’ll confess to being more of a manga than an anime person - I’m very much a bibliophile by nature, and I’m currently not the type who’ll stay up late and watch TV.

Yes, is one of the best mangas (or the best) I have read.
Have you heard the song Bob Lennon?
There are like four versions. Two from the movies, one from “Lost Kenji Tapes” and another sung by Naoki Urasawa himself in his album “Half Century Man”.
My favourite charactesr are Kenji, Shogun, Kanna, Fr. Nitani, Fr. Luciano, Yukiji and Yoshitsune. A honorable mention to the Pope too, he saved that village even risking his own life. Also, that was a motivation for the conversion of Father Nitani.

That is a good interpretation of the “Friend” character. Also, adding the Christian eschatology, can be easily seen as a typo of Antichrist.

Heard it? I freaking downloaded it on a CD and will play it like that character does. Please, elts not spoil anything and get as many people to read this book as possible. It is featured in one of the msot awesome scenes in the manga and in anything ever. Yes, you know, THAT scene, near the end. No spoilers here people… My gosh, I’m still in shock at how awesome this book is. Few works have left me with my jaw hanging, and thisn takes the cake and destroys it to utter oblivion. I know I’m not making any sense but once you finish 20th Centry Boys, you have a good reason to not make sense.

The only thing wrong with this manga is sadly, the ending: SPOILERS!!! Apperantly, we find out that the entire world wasn’t real and it was all a creation of an insane manganaka who in the end is actually god himself because all the events were moved by his power as a manganaka. Dissapointed, the hero gives up and lets Friend do whatever he wants. Dissapointed that nobody likes the book, ‘god’ declares that everyone should die and everyone turns into orange juice before being merged together with the full incarnation of the internet which appears in the form of a man wearing a monkey mask. Yes, I’m that serious. The last words of the manga are: “Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonn turn around and hurt you.”
I’m joking of coruse. Of course that isn’t the ending of the manga, that would be the ending of someone who wrote his entire book 2 days before the deadline and who threw his hands in the air and said ‘I give up, I’m too lazy for this!’. There is not one subtle hint or easter egg in the above paragraph indicating in the elast that the ending is similiar to this and I’m really serious ehre, anyone who ahs read 20th Century Boys can vouch I’m telling the truth now. Now get out there and buy that book to enjoy the real ending!! Or alternitavely, go to mangareader, its cheaper!

Hey guys, I have a 14 year old sister who, to be honest, i’m not that close with. We don’t hate each other, we jsut don’t spend a lot of time with each other. I want to get her interested not in anime but in some of the stuff that I like. Which anime do you suggest I show her? She is rather girly so I think she’d like Clannad or Haruhi Suzumiya. Do you think she’d like Death Note? I wish I could show her Hayate no Gotoku but she’s definitely not going to watch an anime that only has English subs. I’m DEFINITELY not going to show her Elfen Lied, for risk of her hating me forver. On the slightly positive side, no fan girl has ever tried to get me into yaoi without running away in terror from the darkness of… the Other Guy.
What does the Other Guy do? He’s the part of me that would cause any self-respecting woman to run away in terror. As for gays, they run in terror while at the same time warning everyone to hide their women.

I think a sound debate would be good. Abstain from fighting and name calling. I f they are Catholic, try to gain their trust first and then show them Catholic doctrine (that is an advice I received recently). Hmm, sometimes I find myself in similar situations too.

Somethings bothering me though: I actually wish I didn’t read 20th Century Boys, not because it made me depressed because it didn’t (unlike Evangelion) but because, it is too brilliant. I honestly think it is the greatest piece of fiction I have ever seen in my entire life and that something extraordinary must be able to top it. It honestly makes me feel that other works like Elfen Lied, Evangelion, Clannad, Higurashi, Watchmen, Song of Ice and Fire, etc… while BRILLIANT, great and a whole lot of other praise just pale in comparision to 20th Century Boys because it honestly is an utterly good book.
Books shoulddo their own thing and frankly, 20th Century Boys, Don Quixote, Song of Ice and Fire, Watchmen, Elfen Lied, Higurashi, Amercian comics books like Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Stephen King, Harry Potter,etc… they all did their own thing and did it brilliantly. They took cliches, played with them, subverted them, changed them to make them more original and made them their own, they made great and unique characters, they put forward themes in order for there to be conflict and tension and thats all a good work needs to be. These books are brilliant because they are truly original and the authors are great for writing what they want, what they knew and what they wanted to convey, even if their methods (regarding the story of course) were cruel, harsh, demanding of thought, etc…
LostWanderer, sicne you’re a manganaka, do know that there will be people who despite how well written, passionate, thought provoking, emotional, no matter how strong your characters are or how well we relate to them, there will always be thos epeople who will refuse to read your book and will not like it. Forget about them; have feedback from readers who would have valid points such as those who point out a plot hole, difficulty in suspension of disbelief, wall banger moments, dethroning moment of sucks, etc… hell, I heard of a guy who got discouraged in writing his book just because it was religiously themed because he was scared that people will not read it because it concerned religion.Note that the book in question had characters like God and the Virgin Mary featured in story and appearing to people without indicating that such occurences were hallucinations, it had themes like rape, despair, social corruption of morals and hypocrisy, the truth behind Church history and how even inside the Church not everything was completely white but that not everything was compeltely black either, etc…
He was also scared that people will deliberately misinterpret his book and use it as ‘evidence’ that even conservatives think their church is corrupt. Let me tell you something: if people are willing to misinterpret your message just ebcause it suits their own caprices, then screw them. I know a reader should be satisfied with a good story but misinterpreting a work deliberately is bad and offensive to the author. Its like when the nazis saw the movie M: the main actor played a serial killer and outside of the film, the actor was Jewish. The Nazis interpreted this to mean that this is proof that all Jews are serial killers :banghead:. Then there was the legion of decency declaring M to be morally bad. Look, I know there is such a thing as not looking at films which may destroy your moral decency but M was not that kind of film: just because it showed a child murderer in a sympathetic light does not mean its bad because everyone knows that killing children is bad and in fact, in the end, the man gets executed. Hell, if the author I was talking about had his book turned into a film, it’d make everyone at the legion of decency faint with shock at its themes.
Takes risks and have flawed characters. Just don’t ake evil things as something good.
