Who loves anime here?

Hey guys, I’m interested in watching Revolutionary Girl Utena although I don’t want to see a pro-homosexual series. Tell me, does the anime (not the movie which I hear is alternate continuity) include lesbian relationships as canon between the majoy or anything? I wouldn’t mind it if a character was only implied or played for laughs or just a minor character but I don’t think I can stand seeing the concepts of marriage trampled all over by a major character.
 
I gotta agree on the going to fast, my friend. I’m very much the opposite. I might saaample 3-5 anime or manga a year, yet in the 6 years I’ve been into manga, I’ve only had maybe 5 series I’ve actually LOVED. And when I do find one, I stick to it. I’ve read and watched my favorites probably a dozen times each. Written fic, drawn art, gone through dooozens of pages of discussion involving every characters actions, motives, psychology, morality. I think that might be why I feel fine watching a series like Hellsing, which some might say is anti Catholic, or inapproriate. Their opinion is fine, of course, but my own is more based in the characters. I tend to always be more in love with the characters than the plot (although I will obviously like the plot too, if it’s a favorite!) but spending so much time analyzing a piece, especially it’s characters, I can find good qualities in nearly anything. Nearly.

The reason I’m asking is because while otaku culture does include manga and anime in it (with the two being often linked together, especially in the Western psyche), we could say that manga culture was already alive and thriving way before the words otaku or aniota or chuunibyou or whatever were even coined, and even before animated features became commonplace. I’m talking here about the age of the pioneers like Machiko Hasegawa or Osamu Tezuka or Shotaro Ishinomori or Go Nagai or Shigeru Mizuki or Leiji Matsumoto or Sanpei Shirato, and even way before that (Katsushika Hokusai). That’s why I was thinking of a thread which specifically (one could say only) looks at manga.

This is still a LOT I think… I watched 3 episodes today and even that felt like a lot for just a single day.

Dude, Watchmen is one of the greatest works of fiction ever. Period. This is fact, not opinion. Even stuffy literary critics who adore the the rubbish James Joyce spewed out love Watchmen.

I have one thing to say: I don’t get why I don’t like Cowboy Bebop. I don’t know but I’m sort of scared. I’m scared to find out that Cowboy Bebop could be a better anime than even Evangelion or Elfen Lied or all the anime I love. I don’t know, I don’t want that to happen. I hate how rabid some fans can be. One guy said that Wolf’s Rain as the only good anime that ever existed and I otherwise nicely disagreed. I listed other anime that re great and yet, everyone thumbed me down. I don’t get it. I’m scared that maybe I’m the one who isn’t intelligent and who doesn’t get smart anime like Bebop, Champloo and other stuff. At the same time, I can’t buy into other people’s intelligence when they completely misinterpret or downright lie on a show I love.

I hate how people assume Elfen Lied is nothing but gore and violence when it isn’t. At all. It has GREAT characters in Lucy, Doctor Kurama, Nana, Mayu and even Kouta. It has subtlety in Lucy’s motivations as they are never downright stated and the character interactions are just GREAT. There was only one moment where they broke the rule of show and not tell and even then, it actually served a purpose other than to throw exposition. It has it’s flaws which even I’ll admit, like Yuka’s behavior and the ending being a cliffhanger but that’s it. If there was a season 2 and branched off into it’s own storyline, I think it would have become one of the greatest anime ever made, together with Evangelion, Bebop and FullMetal Alchemist as one of the very greats.

And unlike Bebop, Elfen Lied actually made me feel sorry and love the characters. Thinking about Bebop, it doesn’t really have a lot of psychological flaws with it’s characters. There wasn’t an instance that I remember where something bad happened because the characters misjudged. It happened all the time in Higurashi and yet in Higurashi, it never felt like the actions came out of nowhere; you always felt there was a reason they were happening.

What do you guys think? Do I really not get Bebop and should I look more deeply into it?
 
Why do you care? Plenty of things considered to be “best ever” have no appeal to many people.I personally? I am bored by Bebop, Evangelion, Champloo, FMA, and just about every other “good” anime out there. Just leave me to my Godchild, Fairy Cube, Cadcaptors, and Code Geass.

However, as someone who suffers from anxiety and caring way too much what others think, I getit. I kinda freak out when I see people mocking something I like, or interpriting something different.

Well if you’re really going for a thread like that, you’ll need to go beyond history. I think you might also have to look into the technical aspects of it. Examples: Inking, panel structure, publication, techniques.

Speaking of the manga-anime connection though, I’ve just stumbled upon the manga version of this old anime. And once again, I recall those days where I was torturing my stomach.

Nuu!! Must resist reading on! I must only read this when I need to write about Chinese stuff (and not prone to hunger at the same time)! DX

Well in that case, I don’t think it’s a bad idea. I’m only a writer though so I’m not sure there’s much I could contribute. You should ask around for people who have dabbled in comic art around here.

I am a massive anime fan! I even sew my own cosplays for conventions. My favorites to watch include D. Gray-Man, Ruroni Kenshin, Ghost in the Shell, 07 Ghost, Bleach, Trigun, Saiyuki, etc. etc. etc. I also like to watch some Pokemon and Yugioh once in awhile but I can’t stand too many of those at once- the plot is the same every episode. 🙂
 
Guys, I’ve honestly changed my opinion of Bebop. Its true, I needed to take it slow and thinking about it, I’m appreciating it a lot and am googling it a lot. I was totally wrong on the show and I’m saying this not so as to please other fans of the show but simply because I really am starting to love it. It’s very diffirent, with GREAT characters and a high rewatch value and it’s also very well written. I still need to finish it but from what I’ve watched, I can say it’s very good.
 
I think you’ll find taking it slow can make you appreciate everything more, even shows you already love. Hey, first time I read my favorite series, I was all, meh. kinda violent. not my thing. Then, when I reread it, slowler, I realized it had a lot of good points

Let me be honest. Creating a short manga, or the attempt thereof, is ruining my life now. That, or I need to take a break from CAF. 😉
 
Guys, I’m feeling lonely. Doesn’t anyone have anything interesting to say? I’ve posted some videos on my you tube channel, maybe you shoudl check them out. In the meanwhile, it’s been a month since I sent my lsit to listverse and it looks like they’re enver going to post my lsit so, I’m posting it here in the next post or two.
