I thought it pretty well written, just really disturbing content. Its interesting that the same country that made My Neighbor Totoro made Gantz or even Beserk. I know a little bit about beserk. Sometimes when you know too much about a show or movie it ruins the experience of watching it. If I ever feel uneasy about watching something, I try to avoid it.

Nowadays I stick to Miyazaki and Ghibli anime 😃
Yeah, I almost enver read spoilers and when I do, I find a work does get ruined for me. I’m finding it ard to read thorugh Berserk as I know so much about the story through spoilers, plus it’s very depressing. It’s still well written and in my opinion, the violence and sex doesn’t look senseless unlike that of Gantz. According to some reviewer Gantz is: * quite possibly the most offensive anime you can get outside of the hentai section. Certainly it’s the most transgressive made-for-TV anime to emerge in recent memory…"*

Actually, I’m going to watch not because I want to but because I NEED to. It looks so horrifying, badly written and obnoxious that it will make me realize new things about writing good fiction. If it does deliver as expected, I’d probably rate it worse than School Days, I’m going to watch it right now in fact. Pray for me everyone, I’m going to need those prayers.

Just saw Gantz episode1. How was it? HORRIBLE. It makes me not want to watch the rest of the series if it’s going to be this awful. The animation was horrible as in really horrible, the type you’d see on those low budget adult swim cartoons, the main character was obnoxious, and it was bloody and unpleasant without any deep meaning in it. Still, Ill watch the first season to see how it is.

I should have thought of this before for this thread. silly me! this is a short Jesus anime called “My Last Day” My only warning would be that it is a little violent, It is really good though. My apologies if someone already brought it up.

Here it is:

Haha:p…I know,eh?..Well imo if you know t much about a show, movie or even a book b4 you watch or read it doesn’t ruin the experience. For more unsettling and inappropriate stuff I like to do that. For example yrs ago in my last year of high school it having read the cliff notes book on the catcher in the rye before we did our novel study sure helped me prepare for the shock of the stuff in that book and be more responsive to my teacher’s commentary on it.

Yet you have a good point.Watching bad media intentionally and thoughtfully can really help and make you know about fiction writing, what not to do and fine tune your sense of media criticism in general

Hey has anyone heard of a/o read Saint Young Men ?.Buddha and Jesus being Tokyo apartment roommates while vactioning on Earth and trying to understand Japanese society while trying to not have ppl figure out their real identities?.🙂 WHY is it that afaik no one has brought this manga up ?!.

I honestly hope this isn’t offensive b/c it sounds to me like to much of excellent oppurtunity to use the medium of fictional manga to do a demonstration comparitive religion while commenting on society .Or in other words: my kind of fun! :D.

But,by do I hope the author knows what he’s doing :o.

It first caught my eye at OneManga but thenI actually had a friend recommend it to me a few times. From what he’s told me, it sounds hilarious.

Alas, it’s pretty much up with a lot of stuff I have yet to look into because of time management problems.

OK guys, In just finished Berserk and my reaction even though I read a ton of spoilers before reading it? It’s one of the greatest manga of all time period, a really well written, dark, gritty but emotional masterpiece. Seriously, it makes Game of Thrones look like teletubbies it is so dark. It’s dark, it’s depressing but unlike Evangleion I can safely say that instead of making me cower under a corner and be sorry for myself, it made me go forward and confront my problems in order to be whole. Seriously, this manga is as manly as they get. It’s so manly it will put hair on your chest.

However, the bad stuff first which it does have a little of. The worst thing about Berserk in my opinion is the comedy. es, the comedy. The anime actually removed most of the comedy from the manga which was sad as the manga started out with a little comedy which lightened the mood and gave the story a whole new depth. But then, sometime after Schierke came around, the comedy became too much. Characters like Isidoro and even Schierke would become really chibi and not in a subtle way like what happened to Casca in the Golden Age Arc. No, they transform into blob monsters. There was one moment where it was OK like when Schierke entered Isidoro’s mind, who had lost the dagger she gave him, in order to find out where he is and her utterly angry expression when she finds him really is funny. Another good chibi moment is when she tries feeding Guts soup. Feeding him soup implies something. It was priceless.

Most of the time though, the recent comedy was annoying, especially at Puck’s expense. He was reduced to nothing more than a minor joke character instead of the only thing that kept Guts human during his black swordsman years. He honestly is a great and well written character and it’s so jarring seeing him reduced to the state of Jar Jar Binks (although he’s certainly much less annoying).

Now the good stuff: for one thing, the story is like Rurouni Kenshin, simple yet genuis. The foreshadowing, the characters, the politics, the world, everything is great and unique. The characters are all very great and memorable and there is obviously Guts. Oh my gosh, Guts is one of the great anime/manga heroes. I called him the third greatest character in anime/manga history in a list I wrote for my blog, only behind Kenzou Tenma and Kenshin Himura. He has a complex character; he starts off as a jerk but afte rhe realizes his mistakes, he amends them and does his best for his companions. He’s supposed ton be dead because destiny says so but he just refuses to die no matter what the godhand throws at him.

Seriously, if there ever was a fight between Alucard from Hellsing and Guts, Guts would definitely win, hands down. Sure, Alucard may have all that immortality stuff and his shapeshifting powers or something but when he touches Guts’ demon powered sword, he’ll surely wish he was more powerful. Guts would take a lot of punishment but in the end he’d definitely win.

Yes, big anime fan here. I even blog about it. Click here for it. And yes, this is from a Catholic perspective.

Say guys, I just saw Jesuotaku’s review of Puella Magi Madoka Magica and she said that the creator enver intended the anime to be an explicit deconstruction of magical girl anime. She also called it one of the greatest tragedies of our time. So yeah, I still disagree a lot with Tenofovir calling PMMM or Elfen Lied exploitation (although not with Higurashi) and this coming from someone whose feeling for Elfen Lied mellowed out a lot.

However, whether a scenario is realistic or not and the feelings that would ensue from it, as long as they follow logic and are believable, I buy it. For example, a woman getting raped by demons is unrealistic yet Berserk showed that and what happened to her. Instead of making us fascinated by her suffering, we pity her as she got reduced into nothing but a brken shell of herself, only having the mind of a baby. Guts also had to suffer ALOT because of this yet despite his suffering, he never gives up. In fact, Berserk taught me one thing and that is to man up and live life for life itself.

/?\ _ O ummm…

that is the look on my face after being thru with Narutaru.

See when I reached a part early in volume 8 involving what I think might have been either child prostituition or incest (I really dont wanna think about that) I was like " ._.* That’s it. I’m not taking my chances with this stinker*".So I just skimmed thru the volumes pages in like multiples of 10 to 20-ish seeing if I can figure out he rest of the story hoping there was still merits in this attempt at making the “mon genre” serious.

While I was doing this I found one review of the anime wondering if it would explain a lot (seeing as how I hadn’t found any other reviews for either the manga or anime that wasn’t short). It didnn’t go to deep but the person said how they found the anime to not be a “masterpiece” but a stinker. He also said that btw '96-'06 a lot avent-garde anime started appearing (I mean what that person really meant was more like thematic, good pt.) but I turned tail by pressing the back page on my browser as soon as that person explained what their fave hen was.In my mind it was like shutting the door on someone you were talking to who near the front of their apartment with the door wide open and you just sprint down the hall for the nearest way out.

As for the rest of the manga there was more spoken pondering by the fascist dingbats with something about making a “totalitarian society that isn’t Nietzchean” (-_- whatever *that means),more school problems, more abuse and grief of girls, more government involvement,Shina’s parent problems,Shina’s dad getting ready prepped for army stuff in case things turn towards another battle (they do) and most of the world apparently getting hit by ICBM’s for some reason.

*:doh2: Honestly out of all the stuff about philosophy that manga authors know don’t they ever consider how all the dang concepts and constructs made won’t handle much tension by simply being scrutinized by another of different view-point person during a dialogue?.

Around the end a girl explains how the whole planet Earth is her shadow dragon ( 'huh, that reminds me of how in EVA all of humanity turns out to be like the “14th angel” or something) and how she’s the “shadow” and Shina is her “light”.Next day some dudes try to kill Shina calling her a witch but that other girl intervenes killing those guys and controlling some giant hands that “grope” ( >: I DANG this innuendo ) the planet and apparently everyone’s dead (I guess -- ).After all the crazy shizz it has a demented ending in how both the girls talk and apparently start doing some non-hetero stuff like (I dont mean 2 be vulgar but this is the 1st time that frankly came 2 my mind) it’s the start of some illegal porn involving two under-age girls in non-hetero stuff.

AAUUGGHHH!!! **>8 ( **.Don’t you just despise how when your reading a manga or watching anime at near midnight your day ends like this?.

So in the end, this has been much like years go when I was 12-ish in my mistaken attempt at sticking to a movie as despicable as Gangs of New York from beginning to end hoping to find something good the nasty content. In that movie it was obnoxious discrimination, violence, arrogance,a revolting quasi-code of honor in gangs and lewdness (I despise that STUPID brothel scene) which to me brought out all the nastiness of the mid 19th century blowing away my old notion of fancy Victorian era garbed and etiquette aware but slightly snobby ppl.

Here my notion of what a “mon series” can conceptually be about was blown away. Here’s the thing though.Even in the end there was hardly any development given to the shadow dragons!.Even the “angels” from EVA got way more put into their origins and reasons among the camera focus on Shinji and co then the shadow dragons did!.Compared to the “angels” the shadow dragons were almost completely ignored!.

Flip,if anyone want a true good mature seinen look at the “mon genre” I think even I can whip up a better story with a heavy focus on the creatures as well as the people .

Should I feel guilty by not taking time to mention I actually read the whole series? >_>;;
Yes, I know what happens in the end. Then again, the author is notorious for that kind of thing. I tend to avoid his work unless I really want a glimpse of humanity’s darker pits and there’s nothing else available at the moment.

Nice review. I actually didn’t want to watch or read it and after what you just said, I’m definitely not going to. It looks like pure exploitation, making teens suffer with no reason or depth unlike Madoka Magica. The incest/prostitute bit confirmed it for me.

I mean I love dark anime and manga but dark themes have to be dealt with seriously; they can’t be used merely for shock value. They must leave something weeks after seeing them and not just the first two minutes after.
