Well, you can probably skip the old TV series.

New Getter Robo is the most faithful in terms of characterization compared to the manga, though maybe I’d tie that with Shin Getter Robo Vs Neo Getter Robo (Finally getting an official release!) … Getter Robo Armageddon is also great. However, the American re-dub is very “bad 90s import redub” and I’d recommend it subtitled.

It’s cheesy, jets that combine into robots, touching often on apocalyptic themes, drawing on a lot of Japanese mythology such as oni and the like, and to be certain, Ryoma, Hayato, and whoever’s piloting Getter 3/Bear at the time are NOT paragons of morality - but that sort of makes the show more interesting, because it still touches in a lot of interesting themes.

Has anyone ever saw the movie “Spirit Away”? My kids got me to watch it with them and I loved it. It was about the human girl whose parents turned into pigs for eating the food reserved for the visiting spirits. She had to get a job working to try to save her parents before it is too late-and befriended some spirits. In the end, her parents became human again and she and her parents went back to normal and her parents have no memory of the episode. It was an awesome movie.

Don’t feel like an outsider at all! In fact, I’m sometimes scared that people might think badly of me because I love dark anime. However, Rurouni kenshin is my most favorite anime and manga ever of all time. I love it for the same reasons you love it. Hell, I even mention it in my signature! But what scenes did you look away? I did cry at some scenes liek Soujiro’s childhood and the crucifixion scene but Kenshin is relatively tame in it’s delivery. I love how it handles mature themes in such a skillful way. It’s not too brutal but it doesn’t shy away from exploring them.

It’s the same thing with FMA Brotherhood although it is a bit more violent. Berserk is very violent but has a GREAT story while Monster is very dark and scary but is FAR from being Berserk level violent.

In fact, I don’t like anime that contains just senseless violence like MD Geist and Genocyber or anime and manga with ‘mature themes’ that are handled badly like Ayashi no Ceres and Another, I really don’t. I just love mature ones that tug at your heartstrings and deliver their message well. Berserk was just a senselessly violent anime for it’s first 2 and a half volumes but in the middle of volume 3 it becomes a mediaval fantasy epic which is very depressing but awesome at the same time.

I honestly don’t look at people who don’t like really mature anime, I really don’t. Neither do I think they are squemish or unintelligent, not at all. There are people who called me immature for not liking Cowboy Bebop. ANother one called Bleach childish and I told him that I like it because while it does have an atrocious narrative it has fantastic characters and is really fun. I’m not the kind of guy that thinks red riding hood would be better if it was mature or if Tom and Jerry’s cartoon violence was deconstructed to see what would happen in real life. I love idealistic message and cool stuff just as much as I love deep themes you know.

I have seen it, many years ago. An amazing film, so full of astounding images.

Funny you mention it now, I am currently getting it from Netflix for my kids - girls aged five (nearly six) and ten. They have seen a number of Studio Ghibli films and love them all - Castle in the Sky, Kiki’s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, The Secret World of Arriety and The Cat Returns. I have to say that I love them too, except for Kiki which somehow leaves me cold.

The younger one is ambivalent about watching Spirited Away, as it is more “adult” and scary than the others they have seen. I told her she doesn’t have to watch it if she doesn’t want to. But I think that at some level, she doesn’t want to miss out on a movie that her sister would enjoy. We’ll see. I am going to be there with her if she wants me, not to be scared.

Guys I need a tip for a good crime manga.

Monster,Heat,Shamo,City Hunter,Swallowing the Earth come to my mind.I can also take cues on legal thriller stuff from Daredevil comics but are there any Michael Crichton like corporate thiller mangas out there?.Or are the as rare a thing like a fine alternate history like Jin-ra:wolf brigade?.For the record I’d prefer something that doesn’ have that rise to power/criminal hero-worship garbage like in the Godfather movies (so no** Hitman reborn **please).

See if I’m going to do a Tekken+Shenmue+Ghost in the shell inspired story I think I got a good enough feel of the story and characters in Tekken to work something out but virtually no feel from Shenmue.Which is sorta sad to say b/c it’s a flippin Square Enix game we’re talking about here .You can always count on those ppl for excellent stories.

What little I know about Shenmue comes from internet word of mouth,pictures of it and playthroughs that I haven’t really found enough patience to sit through.Videos with just the cutscenes from the games would do nicely seeing as how I can’t afford to download the two games from PSN.

Unlike how I feel about doing a DB fan-fic,I won’t mind changes done on the *Tekken * franchise’s story as much.There’s a lot of stuff I can work with from the first 3 games alone not to mention the current 6 main games but I think I’d like to see how a 7th one would influence my writingsince by then I’ll know just what the heck really ended up happening to Jin.Same thing goes for Shenmue it’s not likely to be adding anything new soon now is it .Oh yeah and I guess I gotta learn how to translate big action movie like scenes in a John Woo or Jet Li crime movie into the stuff worthy of a 21st century classic.

*I’d sooner like to see it as a best selling/historically landmarking thriller novel,followed by screenplay & movie series adaptation then a manga or anime so I can live like post-Catcher in the rye .J.D. Salinger xD.If Tom Clancy’s stuff goes from novels to movies and games why can the reverse happen for right?.

I don’t think is because anime makes them like that. In my experience, most of these antireligious anime fans tend to have liberal and progressive views and these inform they way they see religion.

Just check various tumblr blogs and see how some “social justice” (read; lgbt activism, anti-white racism. heterophobia, pro-choice, etc) internet warrior types tend to be into various fandoms, including anime/manga.

And we have also the ones that see Religion as a mainstream or common thing, and because they are so “countercultural” don’t like religion (speacilly Christian ones).

Avoid City Hunter, it’s full of immoral sexual harrassment jokes which I found really distasteful. However, Monster while it does contain some crime drama is more of a mystery. Both the manga and anime are very good. It’s Naoki Urasawa, everything that comes out of his pen is definitely good. This is fact not opinion. Monster is one of the greatest anime and manga of all time, extremely deep, idealistic and fascinating. The ending when you find out Johann’s true motivation is simply DELICIOUS. It’s 74 episodes though but worth it.

Personally, I don’t talk about Japanese video games because… I never played final fnatasy as a kid. I don’t even know what on earth the series is about. I heard the games are really good but I also loved seeing Noah Antwiler’s reviews and how he bashed to to hell. I just never played them, is all.

Depends on the Final Fantasy. VI is one of the best games ever, and so is VII (or so I’ve heard). IV is awesome, and so are X and XII.

Well, we’re just gonna have to take it from here.

Just watched the last episode of Chuunibyou. Pretty satisfactory when you see it in light of what led up to it. Alas, it feels so inadequate at the same time.

For some reason, I feel like it would make an interesting crossover with the non-anime series The Guardians of Childhood. Some of the themes make both universes an interesting match. Chuunibyou covers the theme of youthful delusions but mixing it with Guardians somehow makes you wonder if an obsessive focus on the mundane reality we live in is any better choice than mixing reality with fantasy. It reminds me of what Tolkien always wrote about escapism. Some people get so caught up with what they perceive as ‘real’, they wind up atheist (no offense to any of them reading this). Again, I can’t say that’s any better than religious people having delusions of spiritual grandeur.

Well that’s enough rambling in this post.

In other news, the ending of Chuunibyou also announced an upcoming series that instantly caught my moe-hungry eyes: Tamako Market The moment I saw the preview, my kawaii-senses just went through the roof. Guess I finally have an upcoming series to look forward to next season along with other otaku I know.

I’m also pretty sad that SAO is heading for its last episode (even though it’ll actually give me an excuse to read light novel translations on Baka-Tsuki ).

The last episode of Chuunibyou… I wasn’t expecting that, but is better than the other outcome I had in mind. There were some funny parts with Kumin and Dekomori. And the letter part was very good.

Tamako-Market seems interesting. Also, it seems that Kyoto Animation is sticking with K-on!-like character designs.

I freely admit to having to turn my head during some of the more intense RK battle moments. And as much as I loved the original FMA, it wasn’t bedtime fare.
