I have confidence
While I wish you well, ā€œconfidenceā€ won’t do you any good without truth.

And I have to thank you for the ā€˜vision’ of Tweety doing a Maria von Trapp singing ā€œI have confidenceā€. . .

You’re not really so ā€˜shallow’ as to try to deflect a post with a ā€˜strawman’ argument, right Matt?

You haven’t really addressed the fact that Truth exists independent of your ā€˜personal’ belief (or disbelief).
The post you refer to made no sense to me. We can see snow falling. We can see the sky is blue. You were actually around when Eve tasted the apple or to witness the birth, death, and resurrection of our Lord? No of course you weren’t and neither was I. Of course truth exists independently of what we believe. But when you can prove your interpretations and beliefs or the interpretatioons and beliefs of others are 100% absolutely with complete certainty correct then let me know. And I need more than the Catholic Church’s interpretation or the ECFs or someone’s interpretation of Matt 16 and so forth. The things of God are all faith for us. Our belief in the Bible is based on faith. Whether you can admit it or not. I am not trying to be difficult here. But to me there is a difference between absolutely knowing and faith and beliefs and calling that faith and those beliefs the absolute truth. I don’t know if this is it or not. But see perhaps the difference between me and some other Catholics is I, a fallible human being, don’t need to think I am necessarily 100% absolutely right on everything. 🤷 But you can believe you are if that is your belief. And if you have reached the end of your walk with Christ and have reached the pearly gates then more power to you. But obviously you haven’t or you wouldn’t be posting. And I wish you a long walk yet on earth with our Lord. May God bless you with good health here on earth and many blessings for many yrs to come. Peace.

If every single thing was as black and white as we Catholics sometimes like to paint them to be, then everyone would believe the same and that is not reality.

I also have the truth which gives me confidence. and you are welcome for the vision
How do you know you of all the billions of people on earth, have the truth? Do you have any evidence to back this up? What makes you so special that you possess such incredible knowledge? I’m sure you are aware of the ridiculous number of Protestant denominations there are, how do you know which is true and which is false? Or are they all true? Or are they all false?

How do you know to believe you or the Catholic Church or the ECFs have/had all the truth? I can’t nor do I in any way presume to speak for tweetymom to whom your question is addressed to. But look at it this way. What we believe is what we may believe is truth.

matt, you continue to insist on the word belief as if the Truth is depended on our beliefs. it doesnt.

you must use Faith and reason. one cannot be without the other. what you are doing is just using Faith. it wont do it my friend. this is a protestant teaching. were you a protestant before? protestants uses Faith alone because this way they keep people from seeking the Truth.

This is a very interesting question.

How do we know the Christian Bible is the real Bible, vs. the NWB (JW’s version)
How do we know the Christian Bible is the final word vs Book of Mormon?
How do we know the Christian Bible is the final word vs Koran?
How do we know WHICH Christian Bible is the final word? Some Bibles have seven less books than St. Jerome’s Latin Vulgate and the Douay Rheims Bible.
How do we know which translation is the correct translation? There have been so many bad Bibles around:
A 1801 version of the Bible that came out with a couple of funny typos, so that the verse
Code:
* these are murmurers ... let the children first be filled
came out as
Code:
* these are murderers ... let the children first be killed
This was not the only case of a mistake in a printed Bible: see also the Wicked Bible, the Printer’s Bible and the Unrighteous Bible.
In 1631 the Royal Printers to The Crown reprinted the King James Bible, an edition that has subsequently become known as ā€˜The wicked Bible’ primarily because the seventh commandment reads,
ā€œThou shalt commit adulteryā€.
This could be seen as a simple typographic error, and the subsequent punishment of the printers as a cruel twist of fate, if seen out of context, but there is more to this than meets the eye.
Encouraging the flock to become adulterous, could be shrugged off as a simple compositors omission of the word ā€˜not’, but a further re-writing of Deuteronomy 5:24 in the same edition is not so easily excused,
ā€˜the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his great arse’.
Here we appear to be looking at something more like sabotage than poor craftsmanship.
The publication of the first ā€˜official’ English language Bible in 1611 was controversial on many levels, contemporary critics damned it with phrases such as ā€œ(I would rather be) rent into pieces by wild horses than any such translation by his consent should be urged upon our poor churches.ā€
On a more fundamental level there was a great deal of profit to be made from selling it, gaining access to the sole license was a war that was waged between three families.
Robert Barker who was the official King’s printer, bought the original manuscript for Ā£3,500 in 1610 with financial assistance from Bonham Norton the master of The Stationers Company and John Bill, a part-time spy, said to have the King’s ear. Barker was a good printer but a bad manager, whereas the other two were astute dealers used to fair means and foul.
The first edition was rushed out for 1611. A power struggle followed as the three men sought to gain a monopoly on the source of such potential wealth, a bitter series of litigation followed.
When John Bill died unexpectedly in 1630 the animosity between Barker and Norton must have reached its peak, so much so that the unscrupulous Norton made an all out attack on his one remaining rival, including perhaps sabotage. As a result of his own unproven accusations of bribery Norton was imprisoned, where he died in 1635.
For the sacrilegious printing Robert Barker and one Martin Lucas, were fined Ā£200 and Ā£100 respectively and ordered to ā€œprint one work every year at their own cost of ink, paper, and workmanship, and as many copies as the Archbishop should think fit to authoriseā€.
Robert Baker, it seems never paid the fine, which was subsequently converted into providing a Greek letter font for Oxford University Press, which there is no record of him supplying either. He continued printing for a further 13 years before being committed to debtors prison, where he died in 1645.
Martin Lucas was not a printer, and had nothing to do with the matter except as executor for John Bill’s last will and testament (for which he was left a legacy of Ā£50).
Eleven copies of this edition are believed to exist today.

You know what , the evidence I have is Jesus living in my heart, and my faith in Him. I do not call anyone false, that is for God to judge. Nothing makes me special from anyone else who has Jesus in their heart. So dear person God Bless you on your journey with our Savior.

How do you know to believe you or the Catholic Church or the ECFs have/had all the truth?
Matt, two of the Church Fathers, whose writings are still available today, were students of St John, the Apostle. These were St. Igantius of Antioch, and St. Polycarp, whose feastday we celebrated yesterday 2/24/10. They were also Bishops who died brutal deaths for the faith.

Their writings tell us how they early Christians lived out their faith life, mass, liturgy, Eucharist. Their writings are substantiated by drawing and writings on the walls of the Catacombs. Archeological digs show they practiced infant Baptism and believed in the Real Presence, among other things the Church still practices today.

These early bishops had to stamp out heresies that began at the very earliest times. Gnosticism, Arianism, Marcionism are some of them. We are not Arians or Nominalists today because of the work of these early Bishops preserving the Teachings of Jesus and the Apostles. That is the role of the Bishop.

If you can’t accept the teachings of the Early Church Fathers and the Apostles, then it is impossible to know if Christianity, the Bible, the Trinity, all of it, is even valid.

I am not familiar with this expression. What does it mean to have Jesus in your heart? Is it a spiritual feeling? How do you have faith in him. I mean, is there something you feel or do or have to know in order to have this?

Thanks for taking the time to answer. šŸ™‚

When I accepted Jesus in my heart at age 38 it was a life changing experience. One that is undiscrible. It is a I know that I know that my Savior lives in me. I have faith because I know that I know that I am cleansed from my sins. I have faith when I read His word. I know I have the Holy Spirit living within me. I have faith because I am a different person than before. It is not only a spiritaul feeling, it is a deep cleansing feeling and you want to do His will.Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.I am happy in my soul. Eveen when thing look bleak all around me my soul is well and Happy.

Awesome! How did that come about? Were you in a church, or reading the Bible when that happened? Did you get Baptized?

I was at a Bible Study for women, BSF and heard a lecture and the woman gave the sermon and it was all about me. Not me personally but about me. I couldn"t believe what she was saying and I now know that it was God speaking to me thru her. I went home and prayed got down on my knees with a repentend t heart and the tears flowed and Jesus came into my heart and I could feel and knew. I was baptised as a baby.

No I don’t. In post #444 I said of course truth exists independently of what we believe. Regardless of whether your beliefs or another’s beliefs or non beliefs are right or wrong, there is a truth. All we can do is strive to follow what we believe is our understanding of truth, trust in His mercy and understanding should we be wrong, and we will know when we meet Him or when He returns again.

Actually I use the reason God gave me and no I have never been a Protestant.
