Associations like that are difficult to overcome. Can you change the spelling, maybe so there is an ethnic connection? I heard a mom telling a story about her daughter and since I only heard it, I don’t know how they spelled it but it sounded like Alize (ah-LEEZ) and was a variation of Elizabeth or the French version of Alice (depending on the source I found ); so, Annalize? Or something like that.(Actually, I know what it is. He has a frequent customer with the name and she’s high-maintenance.
Do you think it’s possible this reluctance might dissipate over time? I know when my wife and I discussed baby names, there were some she suggested that initially made me give a kneejerk “No” response. But then as I sat with the name for a while, it would sort of grow on me.What’s Mr. Allegra’s problem? (Actually, I know what it is. He has a frequent customer with the name and she’s high-maintenance.
Some friends did the same and “Hal”, short for Haldor (Icelandic ancestor) stuck. He was Hal until college. He’s a published writer and uses his given name and it makes me a little sad.So we used a nickname to talk about him in utero, and went with an off-the-wall decoy name whenever we spoke about him to friends or family, and then told everyone the real name after we figured it out ourselves.
