Washington D.C., Nov 6, 2016 / 02:02 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- A new poll released Friday shows Donald Trump winning the Catholic vote by 16 points – but is it an accurate prediction of how Catholics will vote next Tuesday?

“We just don’t have enough data to say anything very reliable this year,” cautioned Dr. Mark Gray of the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, which conducts social science research on the Catholic Church, at Georgetown University.

“The Exit Polls will provide better insight but we won’t see these until after the fact,” he told CNA.

Of all the general election polls, only a few of them have reported the religious affiliations of respondents. And for those that have, their revelations of the Catholic vote vary widely.

The latest survey of likely voters by Investor’s Business Daily and TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence shows Catholics supporting Trump by a 16-point margin – 54 to 38 percent, with three percent supporting the Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson. Four percent are “not sure” who they will support.

While an Oct. 21 IBD/TIPP survey had Trump winning Catholic voters 49 to 36 percent, with five percent voting for Johnson, Trump’s lead narrowed to just 46 to 41 percent on Oct. 28, with Johnson’s support increasing to eight percent.

However, after the FBI announced Oct. 28 that it was again investigating Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server from her time as Secretary of State, Trump’s margin of support among Catholics increased again to 16 percent by Friday, Nov. 4.

Other polls – conducted before the FBI’s Oct. 28 announcement – show markedly different results in the Catholic vote.

A Pew Research poll, released Oct. 27, showed Clinton narrowly winning the Catholic vote among registered voters, 46 to 44 percent.

The Public Religion Research Institute, meanwhile, showed Trump winning among White Catholics 48 to 41 in a compilation of surveys from Sept. 22 to Oct. 17, but Clinton winning Latino Catholics by a vast margin, 84 percent to 12 percent.

What is to be made of these poll numbers?

“There is so much volatility in the polls in what appears to be a close race,” Dr. Gray noted, and in what is expected to be a close race, that “volatility” will be magnified.

“We also have fewer polls this year than in previous elections,” he added, and “on top of that the Catholic sample is typically 18 percent to 25 percent of survey respondents so the problems with margin of error are even bigger. You get more volatility with a smaller sample.”

Thus, it is hard to accurately predict how the general public will vote, much less a sub-group like Catholic voters, he said.

Joshua Mercer, co-founder of CatholicVote.org, agreed that the Catholic vote is hard to predict with certainty right now.

There has been “a lot more fluidity” in the public’s support for the candidates this year than in 2012, he noted. “Overall, there’s a lot less polling,” he added, which means that “there’s a lot less information to go around.”

Ultimately, the election result may come down to several key swing states like Florida, North Carolina, Colorado, and Ohio, he said, and those states have sizeable Catholic populations. “They are all states where Catholic voters are going to decide the next president,” he insisted.

Catholics are expected to vote as the rest of the populace votes, as this has been the case in recent elections.

Catholics have voted along with the popular vote in the last few presidential elections, choosing Al Gore in 2000 when Gore won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote, as well as voting for George W. Bush in 2004 and Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, always mirroring the rest of the electorate.

In the mid-term elections, Catholics went for the victorious party, voting for Democrats in 2006 when the party took control of Congress, and then voting for the victorious Republicans in 2010 and 2014.

I don’t mean to sound uncharitable or anything, but at this point, given the WikiLeaks, Clintons policies, and some of whom surround her campaign and how they feel toward the Catholic Church and her teachings.

If any ‘Catholic’ were to place a vote for Hillary Clinton, I would honestly think them either traitors in the worst case scenario, ignorant or naïve in the best case scenario.

I would be incredibly mortified and horrified if the Catholic vote has as much influence as suggested and Clinton somehow won.

I hope this has helped

God Bless You

Josh

People vote based on hopes and dreams, not facts. If the media hated Democrats, there would be daily reminders how Democrats produced zero pieces of legislation to raise income taxes on billionaires when democrats held all 3 powers in Obama’s first term. No republican votes or support would have been needed with Democrats owning majorities in the House of Representatives, Senate, and the Presidency. Hillary will be great for big corporate America, just like Obama, yet plenty will vote based on the exact opposite of the history and facts. Wall Street doesn’t want Trump. I feel sorry for anyone outside of the US who is trying to make sense of this election due to the media’s spin. Our own people can’t get the facts straight.

Latinos make up a large segment of the Catholic population. And they are voting in large numbers in places such as FL and NV. And are set for a record turnout this election. A new poll Sunday showed Latino support for Donald Trump may be lower than for any Republican presidential candidate in more than 30 years. And Hillary Clinton has support from 76% of the Latino electorate.

If the Republican candidate loses Tues, it could be argued he won the Republican nomination, but lost the general with his infamous words on the day he announced his campaign:

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

They shouldn’t be sending anybody. We do have laws that should be respected by all. Trump did say they are sending all those in there too and we ALL know that’s TRUE. So whats the problem? Do we want things to be even worse than what it has been with Obama?? We all KNOW she is for Partial birth abortion and all the other immoral actions she has pulled. They are weakening our Military, our only means of protection in this crazy world. We need to be able to defend ourselves or just set back and let the Bullies take over!!! We KNOW who and what she is. I don’t trust her with my pet rattlesnake!!! God Help us!!! Memaw

But abortion is not the only topic on the table.

Latinos see Trump and they see a racist, like I said abortion is just 1 topic, the fear of losing your family is higher. That’s what Latinos see with trump.

No to all Latinos see him as a racist. Trump does have Latino support.

What have the Dems ever truly done for the minorities?? Keep them in poverty by welfare, send their jobs overseas. Dumb down our schools. Make them dependent on our Government. Guess whose the raciest!! Abortion should be our MAIN concern. If we kill someone , they loose everything! Why are most of the Planned Parenthood Abortion mills in the Black parts of cities. I have a bumper sticker that says, “Pro Choice, that’s a lie, Babies don’t choose to die.” I have never heard of a baby, black, white, latino, ever say. “Kill me. I don’t mind!!!” And we all know Hillary is for partial birth abortion up till the time of BIRTH!!! God Help us. Memaw

I’m telling you, Trump because of what he said is not going to get the Latino vote. Yes, latinos will support him, but the majority will not

What have republicans done for minorities?
SO your saying that the balance of this country is whether we deny abortion throughout? I taught that there was more important things that republicans were fighting for?

Trump has brought up abortion, but it is not the cornerstone of his campaign. Republicans have held the White House, and with a republican led Congress, and guess what? Abortion was still legal.

So much for Republicans being the pro life party.

Abortion should be our TOP priority!! We will one day have to face their maker and answer for why we didn’t protect them as best we could. How would you like to be one of those babies and way down on our priority list??? As far as I’m concerned, Hillary is the top raciest ever, maybe next to Obama. Just tell me, what have they done for Latinos or anyone else in the past 8 years. If we can’t trust them with our babies, what can we trust them with??? From her history, we can’t trust her with ANYTHING. Crooked from the beginning. God Bless, Memaw

You also have to understand, that some minorities (blacks and hispanics) don’t want to work. School is accessible, we have Financial Aid, a lot of the times community college is paid for, but these individuals don’t want to progress. That’s not the democrats fault, bc guess what, a lot of these individuals end up committing crimes. If your a felon in this country you cannot vote. So guess what??? What good are you to the election process?

I found this on the internet. It shows how under democrats, a black man salary goes up $942 a year, meanwhile with a republican president, that same black man salary only goes up $142. Those are facts

slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2014/05/democrats_are_good_for_minorities_minority_voters_are_making_a_rational.html

But of course, you will deflect from facts and bring up abortion and Benghazi and not want to talk about the facts and how devisive Trump is, especially towards minorities.

So your saying Obama and Hillary have been the most racist persons ever? Wow, lack of history, did you see how blacks were treated in the 1800s? Those politicians, those white men were more racist than the 2 individuals that you mention. Your way off on that.

Besides, there is a racial divide in this country.

Abortion is an important issue, but it is NOT the ISSUE. Republicans, have had the chance to do something in regards to abortion?
Bush in 2004 promised to put a law to avoid gay marriagesand nothing happened.

Yes it is because the president vetos everything he does’t agree with!! The balance of this country depends on our respect for LIFE, Marriage and Religious Freedom. All of which has been attacked by Obama and Hillary, over and over again. And they attack it for Latinos, blacks and everyone else!!! They will go down with America right along with the rest of us! God help us! God Bless, Memaw

If you read “Carhart vs. Gonzales” you would not dismiss the Repub prolife potential. I encourage you to do that. It was about state bans on partial birth abortion. All of the Repub Supreme Court Justices voted to uphold the state bans. Even renegade Kennedy found partial birth abortion too much to stomach. All Dems voted against banning partial birth abortion. All state efforts to limit abortion came from Repub legislators. Elections matter a lot, and dismissing Repub prolife efforts is just a DNC talking point and an utter falsehood.

There was, indeed, a law against homosexual “marriage”, but the Obama administration refused to defend it. The Democrats (and Kennedy) on the Court voted against the law. The Repubs voted to uphold the sanctity of marriage.

Elections matter. Had Obama not been elected, homosexual “marriage” would not be the law of the land.

Right along with most of their other falsehoods. Please don’t fall for them. The future of our beloved Country is at stake!!! Our kids and grandkids depend on us. God Bless, Memaw

No, it is not hard to predict who will win the Catholic vote this week. A majority of Catholics will NOT vote for Donald Trump. Hillary Clinton will win the Catholic vote, perhaps by greater margins that President Obama in his two victories.
