Who would you like out of the non catholics too...

If a Catholic wants to be in communion with the Pope then they should denounce the death penalty for the affront to God that it is.

so all of the people who practiced the death penalty in the OT were participating in an “affront to God”? so God ordering the death of entire races of people (including women and children) was an “affront” to Himself?

i am very much against the death penalty. mainly because of the simple fact that we can never know, 100% for sure, the guilt (or innocence for that matter) of some one and that creates a danger of executing and innocent person. plus, if you factor in the increased security death rows need and the mandatory appeals at taxpayers expense, life in prison without parole is actually less expensive.

that being said, a catholic can be in communion with the pope and still support the death penalty. the church has said this.

i am against the death penalty and this is not a thread about the death penalty, but get your facts straight de profundis.

Me too! He has certainly changed his attitude toward the Church and religion in general. I know Pope John Paul II disapproved of his communist beliefs, but he has done some good since the Pope’s first visit such as condemning abortion and allowing (and attending) Mass and an official Christmas. He also invited Patriarch Bartholomew to Cuba in 2004 to consecrate a cathedral in Havana. It is interesting that when death seems so close, everyone (even the most staunch atheist) seems to call for help. I remember reading about a few people. Voltaire, on his deathbed, asked for a Catholic priest. Lenin, on his deathbed aswell, began asking forgiveness from the tables and chairs around him. Everyone knows who to run to when in trouble. That is why many pray almost on an instinct when facing death or trama…Food for thought 😉

I agree. Didn’t the Pharisees pray exactly like this?

We should pray for the conversion of the whole world, but to go pointing fingers and naming names is so wrong.

God instituted the death penalty, not really sure how it could be an afront to Him.

Nothing is wrong with it, the topic was purely fun and not meant to degrade anyone or finger point. Some people always have to look for the worst in everything. There was nothing pharasaical about it like others are suggesting. The OP wasn’t flouting themselves as a great Catholic. On a message board at times you form relationships and start to actual like people, or at least repsect their opinions. It’s just being human to say you would prefer that person to come around to your way of thinking.

People don’t need to be so darn humble and pious all the time, it comes off completely opposite when done in a public venue. To me those people lambasting the OP as being pharasaical and saying they themsevles “need to be converted everyday because they aren’t worthy to follow Christ blah blah blah” are actually coming off that way.
 
Less arguing, more names. I was hoping to see more from here, honestly 😛

I know cpayne has vowed that I will return to the Church…

Well, if you think about it, the death penalty takes the role of God into people’s hands. So, yes, it’s always wrong… and it’s not like God destroys whole races of people everyday… the Pentateuch isn’t to be taken too literally, remember?

If I were you, I would do a little (and I do mean little) research into the Catholic concept of social justice as it relates to the death penalty. There is no disconnect between endorsing the concept of the death penalty while rejection the option of employing it.
 
My family. My ils are very wonderful Christians-S. Baptist and Nondenominational (Vinyard). My bil was actually raised Catholic 😦 . His parents are reverted, but he and all his siblings are Vinyard, A of G, or nonDenom “charismatic” Christians. I’d like to see them all return.

My own family-most all fallen away & totally secular. I pray everyday for them to come home.

Another website I frequent, BabyCenter.com, has a several Christian parenting forums (Catholic, Fundamentalist, Progressive, Pentacostal, LDS, plain ol “Christian”, Orthodox, etc.). There are several ladies, some former Catholics, some never Catholic, who would make great Catholics-so faithfilled and scripture loving. I would especially love the misinformed ones w/ anti-Catholic bents to study the truth and come home (especially the former Cathlics).

I’ve also been praying for Osama bin Ladin (and Saddam Hussein, before his execution) and all the Islamic terrorists-can you imagine what a force for good they could be if they all turned their hatred around?

Basically, I would love all former Catholics to come back home. On this forum-whatisthetruth, Allis Chalmers, etc. (you know who you all are 😉 ).

I would like to see every Catholic’s child(ren) who have left the faith to come back to the faith.
 
My Wife because from there my children will automatically follow and I will sleep easy at night!!
