the Son and Spirit proceed from the Father and they are eternally begotten. There is no time when the Father was without Word or Spirit.
Ok, but which of The 3 is the begetter?

And if He didn’t beget (create/procreate/etc…), then why or how are the other 2 begotten?

And doesn’t eternally begotted mean that they were created “before” time, not that they always existed?

Woah! What are you tryin to do, resurrect Arianism? The Son is eternally begotten of the Father. There was no time when the Son was not begotten of the Father.
Yeah, I was a little thrown by that myself. I think I am going to start another thread. I noticed here with my own friends and on other boards a lot of stripping down the Divinity of Christ. I just do not get it. I know there is a difference between Arianism and Universalism, (not meaning Unitarians) so I am not lumping everyone together, but it is bizarre to me.

I was corrected on this during an RCIA Q&A. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son.

All I know is, God is One, Eternal, relationship. That, I can wrap my head around. 🙂

But that was “before” time was created by God, right?

:rotfl:

That is the smartest comment on this thread so far!

👍

And does anybody have an opinion on “why” God is called The Father of Jesus?

The funny thing is, I am not even Catholic, But I love how it is explained in the Nicene Creed, which I am sure you guys already know! LOL

My fave part about Jesus and the Holy Spirit:
Code:
** I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets**

Because the truth is the truth no matter who tells it!

Just like when Muslims say “there is no god, but God!”

And when Protestants say that “Salvation comes through Christ alone!”

All beautiful truths (even though the 3 faiths don’t agree on everything).

👍

I love it when we all agree.

Wait, does The Creed teach us that it was The Father who created Jesus since Jesus is invisible to us now but was visible once and since it states that The Father created all?

It calls Jesus God “from” God, Light “of” Light, begotten “of” The Father, by Whom all things were made?

Aha. I notice it says “generate” in the article too. Hmmm. I hadn’t noticed that.

I believe this means the Holy Spririt flows from the Father and Son. It says nothing about the order or nature of thier creation.

The Trinity exists so that God can fully realize His capacity to love. An example is me trying to love my cat. As a Man I cannot (and should not try) love my Cat to my fullest capacity. I need a woman, in marriage, to do that. Similary God cannot love us to his fullest capacity. This is not a reflection of some limitation of God but a reflection of us being finite, only able to receive/understand a certain amount of Love and the infinite Love God has to offer.

So the Trinity is 3 persons with the same infinite/eternal nature, loving each other infintely and eternally.

More on this can be read in Theology for Beginners by Sheed.

Isn’t it a Catholic belief that God generated Jesus and The Holy Spirit?

Could this be the “why” in Jesus calls Him “Father” and Himself “Son”?

Thus, wouldn’t this place God first especially since the 2nd Person of The Trintiy and the 3rd Person both are subject to the 1st Person?

Check out Theology and Sanity by Sheed. It is a good explaination of the Trinity:

Doesn’t God send Jesus and Jesus send The Holy Spirit?

Isn’t that an order of authority?

Has Jesus ever told God The Father what to do or sent Him out to do anything on His behalf?

Has The Holy Spirit ever sent out Jesus to do anything on His behalf?

Seems to me that the main One doing all the sending is God The Father.

Yikes!! Jesus isn’t created!! The thought that the Creed tells us that Jesus is created is beyond outrageous. Are you being serious?
