We will never know. Then again, they don’t really know the true numbers of the other outbreaks or the flu. Unless they tested every person in the country each time they are going off of tests and estimates.

Exactly the same way they are doing for Covid 19, so the argument is not a good one.

Nope, we don’t ban autos, because we know the risk and there is sufficient data to make informed decisions about them.

There is not sufficient data on the current outbreak.

But we are sort of derailing this thread so I am done with the auto thing.

It isn’t my argument.

If you don’t like the numbers presented from the healthline article, go find better ones and post them.

So yes, it is 20 times different than the flu.

You think that if 2% of the population died for each time they got into an automobile anyone would be in a panic?

Just in case you don’t believe me.
Just in case you don’t believe me:
“During the 2017-2018 season, the percentage of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) was at or above the epidemic threshold for 16 consecutive weeks. During the past five seasons, the average number of weeks this indicator was above threshold was 11 (range of 7 to 15 weeks). Nationally, mortality attributed to P&I exceeded 10.0% for four consecutive weeks, peaking at 10.8% during the week ending January 20, 2018.”

we don’t even consider banning automobile use,
Seat belts, airbags, extensively design protected passenger compartments, driver training, prosecution of traffic statute violations, are all in place to give predictable risk to the person driving to make his choice to venture out. No predictability with covid-19 and workers are about to be pushed back to work to profit investors without any understanding of whether the risk is personally worth it or only of value to the chief executive officer who is insulated from exposure.

On a purely secular level?
This has made DH and I talk seriously about how we can simplify our lifestyle and make us more thrifty and sustainable.

We’re both still working.

I’ve always been content with few material possessions and been an active thrifter.

Yep, you did pretty good at picking a specific time period. Percentage is .1% overall.

All of it based on modeling. Just in case you want to use the full season figures and not cherry pick a particular high rate segment.

Conclusion

CDC estimates that influenza was associated with 45 million illnesses, 21 million medical visits, 810,000 hospitalizations, and 61,000 deaths during the 2017–2018 influenza season. This burden was higher than any season since the 2009 pandemic and serves as a reminder of how severe seasonal influenza can be.

And the USA was not shut down even though there were 45 million cases of the flu and 61,000 deaths. How does that compare with the Corona Virus so far?
14, 738 deaths attributed to the covid so far
430,000 confirmed cases.
Let’s see: 430,000 confirmed cases of Corona virus versus
45,000,000 confirmed cases of the influenza during the 20-17-2018 season.
That is 100 times more cases of the influenza ONE HUNDRED times more. And they did not shut down the whole country, did they?
Yes, the corona virus has a while to go and there will be more cases. But is it worth the risk of economic disaster? I don’t think so. I think they can control this disease without these unnecessary extreme measures.

Does the flu require ventilators and intensive care for the same proportion of cases as the covid 19. Nope.

If it did what would the death rate be?

Thing is, none of us are in charge so we do as we are told. Dont like the shutdowns. Vote the president, your governor, county judge and mayor out in November. Simple as that.

Abortion is much different than contracting a disease and possibly dying. One is voluntarily terminating a life. The other is letting mature take its course. We don’t even know much about he virus and what will happen . Right now all we are doing is slowing down the curve so it peaks later. A lot of people will still be exposed. The only reason we want to slow it is to prevent hospitals from being filled and lacking supplies however more and more evidence suggests more and more people are either immune or are asymptomatic or that respirators won’t really help people that have trouble breathing (main reason people end up in the hospital) because it may not be problems with a lungs capacities or ability to pump air but rather the ability of cells to absorb and use the oxygen.

While I certainly wish we could just focus on saving lives and preventing death, the state of the world today and the way the economy works adds an additional stress. Tens of millions just in the US may be unemployed. This leads to financial hardship, stress within families, homelessness etc. Honestly, because of how complicated life has become today and the necessity for money, I think many people would rather be sick or dying than not have any livelihood. I’m sure suicide rates will rise dramatically, domestic abuse is on the rise, mental health issues will rise, and all the stress probably will negatively affect people’s health.

Both the disease and the economic effects caused by shutdowns will negatively affect lives. It’s inevitable. We don’t know what the best solution is but I’m wondering if we are really helping more people, saving more lives even, by all this social isolation and shelter in place

It does seem to me that an overwhelming majority of those advocating the
“…Stop Covid At All Costs” “…No price is too high”
are all on the public payroll.
There isn’t anyone on the public payroll in a position of responsibility who is saying that.

People who die of a heart attack with covid are being counted as a covid death not a heart attack death. This is a complete break from any other statistic. Prior to covid if you got a cold and died from an underlying immunological disorder call death would be recorded as the disorder and not the cold.
I don’t believe your description of how the medical community reports cause of death is accurate. In each case, the degree of responsibility of each factor is evaluated. If the heart attack was not brought on by covid-19, I don’t think it would be counted on a a cover-19 death. But if cover-19 allows an opportunistic bacterial infection to destroy the lungs, the death is properly counted as cover-19 related. The same is true of the flu. People with the flu often die from an opportunistic secondary infection, and then they do count it as a flu death. There is no special treatment of covid-19 death statistics.

If we dont take the measures we are now we would be choosing to have more people die.

The fact that some aren’t prepared was their choice in many instances. The powers that chose this path for the nation have tried to mitigate the financial pain as best they can. More is yet to come I believe.

Life is only as complicated as we make it. It is us who set our own priorities. It is us who dictate what our own cost of living is.

This is a tough time. How each of us deal with it will differ.

You are correct. Governors and other politicians will be paid by taxpayers even if businesses in their state are shutdown.

Dont like the shutdowns. Vote the president, your governor, county judge and mayor out in November. Simple as that.
It is not so simple. The damage to the economy will endure even if new officials are sworn in sometime in January 2021. A depression can last for years and printing money is going to create its own set of problems.

You dont need to explain the economics to me.

My point about elected officials if you dont like what they do. Vote them out so they cant do it again. Problem is most folks wont because they are indoctrinated.
