He didnt visit his family at the cottage? Did he lie about it and photoshop the picture?

No, but the framing of the story was wrong.
He went home as one is want to do after work. He is a political figurehead that is required in Ottawa.

Which is on the other side of the river that’s closed to unofficial travel.

I suppose he could sware of driving home from work but I’d like to know why that would be necessary when the military does the same thing every day.

Life conditions in Venezuela have been catastrophic for years, even without the virus. 1/4 of their people were living in exile long before the virus.

The virus is making matters even worse, and VZ is a textbook example of what a bad government can do to a nation, but not an example of the effects of COVID19.

If they really wanted to, the gas stop convenience stores could be closed to walk-ins, and people could just pay at the pump.
But convenience stores also sell food, which is essential. Also, if these stores are in rural areas which might not need as strict a lockdown, inviting people from the city to drive to the country “for fun” is spreading the virus to areas that are not yet affected and which have significantly poorer health care facilities. The country folk do not want to see city slickers bringing their city germs with them. Stay home!

But you have to admit that designing public policy is harder than it looks at first blush.

The Covid-19 death toll is really from just about 4 weeks.
How do you know that the covid statistics are reliable? I heard a report that test results can be as high as 50% false positives. And just because they died when they had covid, does that necessarily mean that their death was due to covid?
In Singapore it is 0.27% of confirmed case fatality rate. Italy is reporting 13%. Why such a huge discrepancy unless the statistics are unreliable?
And if everyone is supposed to wear a mask, why doesn’t Dr. Fauci wear a mask for his own protection?
They won’t let you in the post office without a mask.
"Americans should wear face masks as a way to help stifle the spread of COVID-19, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the nation’s top doctors leading the public health fight against the coronavirus pandemic "
Oh yeah? That’s odd. I don’t see Dr. Fauci wearing a mask?

You read “somewhere?”

Not unreliable. Just based on different denominators in the ratio.
And if everyone is supposed to wear a mask, why doesn’t Dr. Fauci wear a mask for his own protection?
  1. The mask is mostly to protect others from your germs. Not to protect you from theirs.
  2. Fauci does not want to embarass Trump by appearing alongside him with a mask while Trump refuses to wear one. He would be fired if he did that.

The fatality rate is calculated by dividing the number of deaths by the number of confirmed cases. Any area with more widespread testing is going to have a lower fatality rate. I have even gotten to the point that I take a very high fatality rate as evidence that the testing in that area is way, way behind where it needs to be. A virus can mutate so that it can be more virulent in one area than in another, but what you usually see when there is a very high fatality rate is that there is also a very high positive rate. That says that most of the testing is being done on not just on people with symptoms but people who have fairly severe symptoms.
And if everyone is supposed to wear a mask, why doesn’t Dr. Fauci wear a mask for his own protection?

The last time I checked, the White House was doing a symptom check (including a temperature check) and not allowing anyone with symptoms into the press briefings. An alternative is to require masks. Both are meant to reduce the likelihood that an infectious amount of the virus will be transmitted. Neither is as good as just staying out of contact altogether.

People who work in medicine are taking this very seriously. We should, too. If we don’t, the inundation of patients they will have to deal with will become overwhelming to them.

Possibly to avoid the macabre and frightening appearance of all of those on the podium wearing masks as if this was the “Masque of the Red Death”. He might well wear one in other circumstances, and probably does.

We already have this as we see shoppers in Walmart or Target or at the post office.

So, do you think the official approach to the virus is more about appearances than actual health considerations?

From some. Some people just like to go along with anything they’re told. The fact that these people exist has little bearing on what is actually happening.

No support from others

Both. I think it does little good to frighten the public beyond what is absolutely necessary. Remember FDR saying the only thing we had to fear was fear itself? That was an absolutely false utterance. We had plenty to fear. He was lying and he knew he was lying. Probably most of the public knew it too. But it was uttered in order to induce sufficient calm that necessary things could be done. What if he had said many children would die of malnutrition; that masses of people would lose their homes or farms without fail; that many would die of curable diseases because of lacking money to pay for treatment ? Sometimes calming the populace is part of governance.

For sure. But there is a difference between abstract reassurances just as “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”, and actual actions you take. Either wearing a mask is important or is not. Many people are inevitably going to look to Dr. Fauci and take their cues from him. If he is not seen wearing a mask, fewer people will wear a mask. This is not an issue if masks don’t have a huge effect. If they do have an effect, then it is an issue. I wouldn’t say wearing a mask implies “We’re all gonna dieeeeeeeeeeeeeee!” any more than anything else the government is doing. The only thing Dr. Fauci is doing here is giving double signals and sowing confusion.

I still think having masks on all those people on the podium would have been creepy to some, ridiculous to some and persuasive to none.

Perhaps. But that already describes the general reaction to everything happening right now.

As I have said many times, Dr. Fauci cannot wear a mask in public when standing next to Trump who refuses to wear one. It would embarrass the president and he would be out of a job.
The only thing Dr. Fauci is doing here is giving double signals and sowing confusion.
That is one thing Dr. Fauci has never done. He is the true hero of the whole administration response team.
