Whose Keys are These?

How in the Orthodox church are final decisions made concerning:

contraception, abortion, euthanasia, women’s ordination, protection of marriage, chastity in same sex attraction, in vitro fertilization, etc.

Surely, that’s not left up to each person’s individual conscience or each Bishop’s decision (as it is in many protestant denominations) which has resulted in the approval of contraception, abortion, homosexual acts, homosexual bishops & priests, homosexual marriages, homosexual interpretation of Sacred Scripture.

Did God the Son have human attributes and feelings?
Of Course he did. Jesus was fully human and fully divine. He could experience all human emotions and experience…even death. Everything but sin.

Of course St Peter was given the keys! All the Apostles were given the keys by virtue of the power to bind and loose.
Really? Chapter and verse where Jesus also gave the other 11 keys? This is also a Protestant and Mormon belief. Where does scripture state Jesus gave others keys, after Peter? Scripture only mentions Peter alone. So kindly show me where this occurred?

You don’t consider the Trinity in constant unity?
LOL! Now you want to debate the Trinity. Good luck with that. 😃

When the Word was made flesh, the person of Christ was on this earth as the God-man. But we cannot ascribe the attributes of our fallen human nature to the Holy trinity. The Holy Trinity is a great Mystery.

Are you a sola Scripturist? It is the protestants who usually say: show me where that is in Scripture.

Read this thread and the quotes I have posted from the Church Fathers instead of jumping in and starting all the same arguments over again. Thank you.

You brought up that God the Father doesn’t discriminate when I pointed out that God the Father specifically chose Peter and from that, Jesus presented him with the keys.

I provided one verse from Scripture (Isaiah) showing that God the Father selectively chose people throughout salvation history.

The Holy Orthodox Church has canon law, bishops, priest, deacons—definitely a hierarchy. We have spiritual fathers and confessors who guide us in our daily lives.

But we do not have a supreme, infallible pontiff. That did not happen until the 19th century.😃

So then you say that He discriminates and left the other Apostles out of the picture? I think not.

And the Gentiles (everyone else) were included later and there are implications of that throughout Scripture.

We are all over the board here. We are way off topic. Is there anything else about the keys?

Because you refute the “one office” interpretation of the keys, I would like for you to explain how the Orthodox hold to one faith and one standard of morals without a Pope.

Many of us (myself included) don’t have any idea how Orthodox hold fast to Truth.

The Episcopal Church has many of the same structures in place, yet they now ordain noncelibate same sex attracted women and men, they bless same sex marriages and one of their ministers has said that “abortion is a blessing.”

If you say so.
First off logic and reason demand that it be so! What Authority could a Patriarch have if he is not given by God the gift of infallibility (the Holy Spirit)? Consequently those Churches that say they are not infallible are also the ones that say they are not guided by the Holy Spirit.

Secondly the Sacred Scriptures show infallibility to be an indentifying mark of the true Church and are physical evidence of it. You profess the Bible as the Written Word of God right? If so then I must ask what you think the Scriptures are evidence of beside your belief that they are the Word of God written by man under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The answer my Orthodox brother is infallibility! The Sacred Scriptures are the products of infallibility and therefore the evidence that infallibility exists in the Church and has since the Old Testament.

Common sense would then have us conclude that because the Scriptures are cut and dry evidence of infallibility at work in Gods Church then this must mean infallibility would be a mark of His Church today. Well good news! That Church does exist and it also just so happens to be the ONLY Church that claims to possess this identifying mark. This Church is the Roman Catholic Church!

Dear Barb,

The pre-schism Church did not look to the Pope as a baby sitter. There were Ecumenical Councils (we recognize the first seven). Each bishop cared for his own flock. There was even a time when Saints, (such as St John Chrysostom) were not in communion with Rome. Read your history–it is quite interesting. Heck, one Pope (Honorius) was even declared to be a Heretic.

Please start a new thread or pm me if you want to veer further.

That’s the Mystery of God, His ability to divide and still multiply.

You think the Pope is a baby sitter?

The Episcopal Church has a bishop who cares for her flock. Recently two female Episcopal priests married each other (in the Episcopal church). I’d imagine it will be a few short years and noncelibate same sex attracted bishops will be marrying as well.
