Are you saying that this is a required belief? After all it was a private revelation and we are not required to believe in any private revelation for our salvation.
We as Catholic, beleive, that if OUR LADY came to ST,SIMON STOCK in 16, 1251,and, presented him a Brown Scapular and said this from is my garment, that those that wear it around their neck shall not suffer eternal fire I beleive it, because OUR LADY said this.

God bless you too. 🙂

I don’t believe the BVM would ever make such a prideful boast.

She does not have power over the gates of hell, that is God’s prerogative.

If you were to point to a vision of Jesus Christ giving the scapular and making this promise, I would take it more seriously. I find it odd that in all of Jesus’ ministry he never once suggested this sort of thing to his followers, and there is no early church tradition of such a thing.
what i,am saying is that the Brown Scapular was give to ST SIMON STOCK by OUR LADY,and she told him, that those that were it around their neck, would be save from eternal fire. LOOK up about the BROWN Scapular and read what it says, this might help you understand what I.am trying say. Again my freind,GOD BLESS and .peace be with you.

We as Catholics believe no such thing. No Catholic is required to believe in any private revelation.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Chruch;
67 Throughout the ages, there have been so-called “private” revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however, to the deposit of faith. It is not their role to improve or complete Christ’s definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history. Guided by the Magisterium of the Church, the sensus fidelium knows how to discern and welcome in these revelations whatever constitutes an authentic call of Christ or his saints to the Church.

Christian faith cannot accept “revelations” that claim to surpass or correct the Revelation of which Christ is the fulfillment, as is the case in certain non-Christian religions and also in certain recent sects which base themselves on such “revelations”.

The scapular is a private devotion and is in no way a dogma. No Catholic is required to believe in it or practice it.

Are you just saying that it’s not a defining mark of Catholic belief? Otherwise that seems like a bit of a stretch. Those of us who wear the scapular do so precisely because we are Catholic. We’re simply responding to the Church’s recognition of this devotion (i.e. spoken about by many popes, the indulgence attached to it, incorporation into the Roman Ritual, etc.).

I wear the brown scapular, too.

But the revelation to St. Simon Stock was a private revelation, so it can’t be quoted as if it’s the Gospel or Magisterium.

But I hope it is true, and I place huge confidence in Our Lady’s intercession and protection - in this life and in Purgatory.

Catholics do not believe and the Church does not Teaching that because Mary said something (private revelation) that we must all believe it.

“Those of use who wear the scapular” fits me as well. After all it is a part of my habit.

But that does not make the scapular a dogma of the Church. It is a private devotion.

I do not know what you mean by “incorporation into the Roman Ritual”.

I know fully well what you are trying to say, I am well aware of the brown scapular. I simply disagree.

What I believe is that she did not say this at all because she can not say this and would not say this. She does not have the power to promise anyone that wearing a scapular of any color will spare them from hellfire. If saint Simon Stock was truly given such a promise, it was not by the BVM.

My guess is he was mistaken, perhaps he was dreaming or something like that, I don’t suspect any chicanery on his part.

God bless you.

I think he means that the Scapular enjoys the recognition of the Church because the ritual for enrollment was included in the Rituale Romanum (at least up to the 1962 edition).

I looked at the long and short forms of the investiture from the Rituale, but there is no explicit mention of the “Sabbatine privilege,” just usual invocations of God’s grace, protection, and Mary’s intercession, etc.

None of this goes against what I said. I was simply asking if you meant it wasn’t a defining point of Catholic belief. I acknowledge that isn’t. Now I know that’s what you meant. But it seems strange to insist that Catholics don’t believe this. Many, many Catholics do. But no one is saying “Catholics must believe…”, so perhaps there needed to be more clarity in general.

Incorporation into the Roman Ritual: its blessing and investiture appear(ed?) in the Roman Ritual.

The various forms of the blessing from the Rituale are here - please note that there are other scapulars, so you have to look for the scapular of Mount Carmel. Originally only Carmelites could do the blessing, but now any priest has permission (as of 1964):

That in no way changes the fact that it is a private devotion and Catholics are free to ignore it and even disbelieve it.

lol! when did I suggest anything to the contrary?

I was just trying to be helpful by posting the Rituale since it was brought up.

:hypno:

The problem is that your posting replies to my replies to a user who seems to think that what ever Mary says is dogma. This is what I am working with.

Muddying the waters with little things about the devotion (which as a devotion is not required believe for any Catholic) in such a way that it appears that you are supporting the user who is in err on basic Church Teachings regrading private revelations.

Well, I am certainly with you on the fact that it is not required of Catholics. Certainly highly recommended by many popes and saints, though…

Somebody had asked about the Rituale, which is why I got involved on the side-issue. I didn’t mean to muddy any waters. 😃

We CAN and SHOULD place huge confidence in Our Lady’s intercession and protection.

The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the “habit” of Carmel, reminds us to pray and live our love for the Lord and His Mother. There are many positive uses for sacramentals.

Here is the quotation from the Catechism of the Catholic Church with regard to private revelation:

#67 "Throughout the ages, there have been so-called ‘private’ revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however, to the deposit of faith. It is not their role to improve or complete Christ’s definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history. That sounds like a balanced statement of the teaching of the Church. It is not negative to private revelation that has Church approval, nor is it charged with fanatical exhortation.

It is up to individuals to decide whether the sacramental is beneficial to their spiritual growth, and is viewed with the correct understanding.

I thank the Lord for the treasures in our Church such as the visual aids of stained glass windows, Stations of the Cross, medals depicting Our Lord and Our Blessed Mother, holy water, etc. We have five senses, and the Church uses them to help lift our souls to the desire of God’s grace, and a better disposition to receive the Sacraments. Sacramentals, when used correctly, can aid in leading us closer to the Lord.

I find this fascinating. I am on my own journey of faith and I have brown scapular hanging up in my room. It was blessed whan I bought it (I think). I am not (yet) enrolled because I am not “there” yet. I want to be and I am working on it. To me, I am using this sacramental to help me see where I want to be. I forget the quote about disbelief but it went something like “Lord, help my disbelief.” Not so much that I don’t belive in the revealation, it’s a conversion state where my inner disposition is evolving, but my outward expressions haven’t evolved. Maybe I won’t ever be enrolled, but I want that kind of faith. I want to be able to go to my priest scapular in hand and ask to be enrolled with confidence.

I wear the brown scapular, too.

I, also, wear a brown scapulary and the Church that I used to attend was run by Carmelites. Once I had a discussion with one of the Priest exactly about but what if if the person actually is in mortal sin. The priest answer was that all Carmelites have to, always, wear the brown scapulary. According to the priest is mandatory for them to have it permanently on and every Carmelite is very careful following this rule. However, there was a case where the body of a Carmelite was found and the scapulary was nowhere to be found. According to him if the person is intentionally under mortal sin and intentionally refuses confession and is not repentant at the moment of death, that person won’t have the scapulary on at the moment of death.

Perhaps you all should pray and study it’s mysteries a bit more. Mary was crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth by God. I’m also pretty sure that just wearing it isn’t going to get you into heaven, but by wearing the Scapular, praying the Rosary daily and trying to live as The Blessed Virigin did will get you into heaven.

Remember wearing the Scapular is like a pledge to God to live like Mary did while she was on earth and I’m sure God allowed Mary to make that promise.
