Why am I not feeling it?

I am not an economist.
I am an average working man.
All I know is that my wages have not gone up, while prices are going up on just about everything.
The U.S. economy on the whole may be doing well, but I am not feeling it in my part of the country.
If things do not change, I may have to pursue a second job, if I can find one that fits my regular work schedule.
To me, it just does not seem like things are going well.
Fair enough. Just be careful generalizing your experience to broad statements about “Main Street” and “Wall Street.”

That may work in economic textbooks, but out here in Workland, USA, some of the employers just cut staff and ask the other employees to work harder. They consolidate positions, but no one gets paid more.

Haven’t seen it having any impact. While unemployment is down, there is still no shortage of candidates who will work for today’s suppressed wages and receding benefits.

Trump campaigned on it, but improved wages and better benefits seem to be going no place fast.

Wages are rising, according to most accounts. I’m sorry that it’s not affecting you or YourNameHere. Perhaps as time passes, it will.

I don’t work on Wall Street. I work on Main Street.
If the economy is good, it must be good on Wall Street, because I am not feeling it here on Main Street.

Where are most of these accounts coming from? I have not heard about rising wages.

You are not the entirety of Main Street, though. I’m Main Street, not Wall Street, too, and things are definitely improving for me. I’m not denying that you’re struggling; I’m simply saying that you can’t generalize you and your friends to everyone who’s not a stockbroker.

Wages are rising… 2.6% last year. Meanwhile average cost of living increased 2.8%. So yes people are making more money in a vacuum, but in reality they’re making less despite pay raises.

Glad you are prospering. But some folks are struggling. A rising tide is supposed to raise all boats.

Funnily enough, macroeconomics doesn’t always conform to hackneyed idioms. It is asinine to think that “wages are rising” means that “literally every single person’s income is increasing.” I’m not denying that some folks are struggling. I’m saying that you can’t generalize your experience to a general statement about Wall Street. I’m really quite astounded that that statement is at all controversial, but here we are, I guess.

What you are sayings seems correct.
If wages do not surpass the cost of living increases then it is like having your wages cut, when it comes to buying power.

I didn’t realize the cost of living was going up so much; will have to pay closer attention to such metrics.

Hey Tomarin, at least you are trying to explain things about wages and such. Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut.

So you are criticizing my way of thought now? Asinine, really?
Yes, it is asinine to think that general increase = universal increase.
Why is so important to you, HR, that I do not generalize about Wall Street?
I have no problems with generalizing about Wall Street, and you’ll find that nowhere in this thread have I said not to generalize about Wall Street. I have said not to generalize about Wall Street based purely on your own experience. There is plenty of data just a Google search away if you would like to generalize.
You are sounding more and more like a stock broker or banker to me.
I’m a structural engineer.

At least I am nice enough not to call your thoughts asinine. But whatever works for you.
All this being said, I not feeling the prosperity.
Glad you are.

I agree prices are going up.

You don’t see slightly lower taxes on your paycheck since Trump came into office? All of us at my previous job saw all our paychecks increase by about $40-50 a week last year due to less taxes.

I am not rich either, I am a middle class construction worker. But lots of people did see a better economy reflected in that tax break. Not just the rich either. The middle class.

Sorry that you are not benefiting at all from a better economy. I get robbed with high taxation like every other American so I sympathize

Sorry. No raise in pay. No noticeable tax difference.
All I see are higher prices.
I am sure that other people must be gaining from the thriving economy.
But I have yet to feel it.
