Given how few of current Protestants and Orthodox have ever been Catholics, why must there be any hatred of Catholics at all?

One could certainly understand the heated emotions of today’s heretic, but as we have seen very few of those who hurl the vitriol were there at its formulation.
Indeed, hatred of Catholics would still be there even if no current Catholic had converted to Protestantism. Separations were very hurtful ( read, for instance, about the Reformation ). These hurts have been perpetuated by misinformation, misconceptions and prejudice ( just to to name a few ) against the Catholic Church. Those were some os the seeds of separation sown during the Reformation. For example, Matin Luther called the Pope the anti-Christ and taught his followers so, who, in turn, taught their children and so on…:o Maybe someone can help us with a link/reference relevant to this matter;)
That’s why even today there are Christians who believe and teach that the pope is the anti-Christ, that Rome is the whore of Babylon and that Catholics are really not Christians
.These Christians were taught so by their forefathers, there is no doubt about that. And how else would you expect these Christians to react? That’s why hatred of Catholics is still there. But love is needed to help cure this cancer.

Laudetur Iesus Christus!

Few people in America hate the Catholic religion,
but there are many who hate what they mistakenly believe is the Catholic religion
–and if what they hate really were the Catholic religion,
Catholics would hate it too.

One Lutheran pastor said, "It’s understandable why Luther would have called Leo X “God has given us the papacy; let us enjoy it.’] Anti-christ, but I really doubt he would have said the same thing about John XXIII or John Paul II. In fact, either of these might have prevented the Reformation.”
