By this I mean that with the advantage of the Sacraments, namely the Holy Eucharist, why are Catholics no noticeably more holy than members of any other denomination?
Another good question! When you think about it, we really should be very holy people - a community of holiness. Being Catholic is a great responsibility and accountability as well as being a wondrous gift.By this I mean that with the advantage of the Sacraments, namely the Holy Eucharist, why are Catholics no noticeably more holy than members of any other denomination?
(God will expect some sort of return for His Gifts – we cannot bury them)
Matthew 25:14-30
**The Parable of the Talents **
14"Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15To one he gave five talentsa] of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. 17So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
19"After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’
21"His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
22"The man with the two talents also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.’
23"His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
24"Then the man who had received the one talent came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’
26"His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
28" ‘Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

I agree with both your points, Dove51 and hi there!I think holiness is often a state of mind, or heart. If I could have a holier heart, I doubt many would notice, but oh, what a difference it would make!
It may seem that Catholics are no holier than any other normal person, but I think this might be because we’re taught that making our good deeds known makes them null and void. After all, “A good work talked about is a good work spoiled.” (St. Vincent de Paul).
I don’t think anyone knows how holy Catholics are compared to other denominations, only God knows this.By this I mean that with the advantage of the Sacraments, namely the Holy Eucharist, why are Catholics no noticeably more holy than members of any other denomination?
Boy! I really agree, Barb, that this needs to be our main evangelization and it sure is hard…I think I need more Sacraments!Good posts…
It sort of hit me with impact when I read the Opening Post that we do make really BIG claims for Catholicism…and we have the duty and obligation to reveal the fruits. To back up our claims! Our very first witness is the person we are. It was said of the early Christians “see how they love one another”. That is a very high bar set for us!!!
Blessings - Barb![]()
Agree all statements, Brigid…absolutely:thumbsup:Boy! I really agree, Barb, that this needs to be our main evangelization and it sure is hard…I think I need more Sacraments!I need to be able to see Christ’s face in everyone - I’m sure not able to do that myself!

since neither you nor I nor anyone else is in any position to know or judge the interior disposition of any individual (still less of a whole group) it is simply impossible to make such an observation. Holiness is not running around wearing a “look at me I am so holy” t-shirt. If you mean to say: they Catholics I know are not noticeably kinder, virtuous, or patient than others I know, then say so. Yes it is quite true that many people of any denomination are not yet able to translate their devotion and belief in the gospel to their actual life activities, but they are still working on it, so don’t judge.By this I mean that with the advantage of the Sacraments, namely the Holy Eucharist, why are Catholics no noticeably more holy than members of any other denomination?
well it is the catholic faith which has all the apparitions…and has saints and miracles…but at the end of the day it is down to individual holiness…there can be people of other faiths that are closer to god than us and vice versa…it is each persons individual choice to have a relationship with god that draws them closer to god and thus makes them holierBy this I mean that with the advantage of the Sacraments, namely the Holy Eucharist, why are Catholics no noticeably more holy than members of any other denomination?

1 "(But) take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
2
When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites 2 do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
3
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
4
so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
5
"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
6
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
7
3 4 In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words.
8
Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
In other words, Catholics are human, first and foremost.A combination of cowardice, laziness and apathy. It’s that simple.
Many don’t want to put in the work to better themselves, many are afraid to let others know they are Catholic (I lived in this area all my life and I didn’t truly know a single Catholic till last year!) They are afraid to evangelize and they are afraid to speak up.
Finally there is the apathy which I can sum up like this: “Of the making up of excuses for the laziness and cowardice that many ‘Catholics’ display there is no end.”
Somehow I don’t think God will except that excuse…In other words, Catholics are human, first and foremost.
