Why are Catholics so in love with their guns here on CAF?

I am not a gun person and I doubt that I will ever own one, but this really isn’t a good argument to use.

One could use this same rationale to criticize people for doing anything practical to protect themselves or their family.
  • “Why do you have insurance? It just shows you don’t put your full trust in God.”
  • “Why do you lock your car doors and not leave your wallet in plain view on your front seat? It just shows you don’t put your full trust in God.”
  • “Why do you look both ways before crossing the street? It just shows you don’t put your full trust in God.”
I’m sure one could make plenty of reasonable arguments as to the dangers of gun ownership. Let’s not imply that anyone who owns a gun has inferior faith in the Lord.
But innocent people who die of gun violence will get to Heaven faster. Again, trust in God.

I don’t like it when a kid finds a gun and kills himself or his sibling.

I don’t like it when some mentally ill person turns an assault rifle on a bunch of innocent people.

I don’t like it when police shoot down a person who is out of control mentally but not carrying a weapon.

Guns kill too quickly, there are no second chances.

Unfortunately there are too many guns in society now, so many people feel that they need them to defend themselves and their families against other people with guns. There is no easy solution, certainly not making people give up their guns.

Also, a lot of people are sportsmen, and they use guns for hunting. I see nothing wrong with that.

👍
So when a large man whose weight is the equivalent of two of me breaks into my house in the middle of the night while my husband is at work…

I’m supposed to drop to my knees and pray to God that he will go away…and NOTHING ELSE?

Or do I include making a phone call to the cops who are, at best, 10 mins away from call time to them coming to my door?

Or do I grab my gun, pray and call the cops…completely neutralizing the problem entirely?

I’m serious! I’d like to know how my using a weapon to defend myself in my home with my one year old is seen as not trusting in God.

I suppose my being robbed, raped and killed while my daughter is left until the morning when dad comes home or when someone else calls the cops because she is screaming for hours from the commotion.

Yeah…it’s just God’s will for all of this to happen.
👍 👍 👍

I agree. Germany has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world and as a result, the number of deaths by guns in Germany is enormously lower than in the USA.
Agreed. We all see how wonderful German gun control laws worked in the 1940s.

Can you explain how this line of thinking would not lead to us failing to take any steps whatsoever to protect anyone from anything in the name of trusting in God?

I think there are some very problematic theological implications to this line of thinking. It makes it sound like if a victim but had more faith, they would not have been victimized. Or that their being victimized is actually a good thing.

But it’s very clear in th Bible that we ought to place our trust and faith in God alone.
So why does the pope ride in a bullet proof glass vehicle while surrounded by armed guards? You need to tell him he’s doing it wrong.

Abortion and homosexual “marriage” are intrinsic evils. Guns are not. There’s a difference.
I agree - then remove the last line - my attitude to the gun issue should be - o well its going to happen anyway what can I do - my gun ownership is more important than the bigger issue.
I’m not an American so I don’t have the same opinion as most American we do just fine without hand guns and automatic firearms - its just dialogue and these discussions need to take place.

He hasnt been doing this recently!

I don’t like it when criminals use guns to kill innocent people.

I don’t like it when criminals shoot cops.

I don’t like it when criminals kidnap, rape and murder innocent women and/or children.

Sometimes giving a criminal a second chance means that YOU die and he lives to kill someone else.

Our 2nd Amendment has not been and never will be about hunting. It IS about keeping tyranny at bay. We need it now more than ever.

Oh, come on now! Get a guard dog instead.

And how many gun owners are killed each year in gun battles with their perpetrators,
IF I was to break into a house, I would get a gun (illegely), first, and, if faced with any type of dog, would kill the dog and then go after any people in the house, 😃 😛

If it’s God who decides who lives and who dies, no guns necessary.
Then you would oppose the police having them?

And I suppose you would lecture the Pope, who has armed guards - even the guys with halberds and the plumed helmets carry Sig Sauer handguns in those striped pantaloons. 👍
