Why are Muslims saved according to Roman Catholicism?

The Church doesn’t necessarily say that Muslims are saved, just that they are part of the plan of salvation.

It is not for us to say that they will not have an opporunity for salvation.

Here’s a scripture passage that opens many pathways and that should make us slow to judge:

1 Peter 3

18For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.
Exactly.

Our friend underdog always takes it a step father than what is written, then refuses to discuss anything.

The Catholic Church does not say who is going to be saved in the way that underdog thinks it does. All that the Church is saying in this statement is that Muslims profess to worship the same God and that does place them within the possible “to be saved” list.

You appear uninterested in replying to my substantive arguments. I’d be interested in seeing your replies, but I recognize that you have many things to do. Myself, I need to grade research papers (on world religions, ironically).

However, as for “standing with Vatican II,” I stand with C. S. Lewis and many other non-Catholic writers on this as well.

In Christ,

Edwin
What’s your point with grading papers on world religions? God chooses the foolish things on the world to shame the wise (1 Cor 1). Are you trying to say C.S.Lews and other non-catholic writers are authorative over the Scriptures?

What are you guys trying to say? Do Muslims get special treatment over others who die without faith in Christ? Are you trying to say that those who die have a second chance to believe in Christ in spirit prison? This sounds more like Mormonism than orthodox Roman Catholicism.

What are you guys trying to say?
Exactly what we have said. What do you think that we are trying to say?
Do Muslims get special treatment over others who die without faith in Christ?
Nope. We are saying that since they profess to worship the One True God, they are in a different place than hindus.
Are you trying to say that those who die have a second chance to believe in Christ in spirit prison?
No, you get one and only one shot. That is it. We are saying that God and only God can judge their hearts. I cannot, you cannot, Paul cannot.
This sounds more like Mormonism than orthodox Roman Catholicism.
that is because you are forcing it to.

Are you saying Muslims are better off then Hindus based on believing God as being a single deity? So, why does that make Muslims closer to the truth than Hindus? Maybe the Hindus are more right since God is triune? I think Catholicism has drifted so far from the scriptures that I cannot even tell if faith in Jesus Christ is central for the world according to your Christian Faith. How do you see the Mormons, better off than the Muslims? I am not trying to argue, but I am trying to understand 21st Century Catholicism. It’s a very difficult taks for a non-Catholic Christian.

If anyone reads the paragraph cited in the OP in context with the rest in the chapter, one can plainly see how it is showing that the plan of salvation involives all men and those elements we have in common with others are seeds for the Gospel. Likewise, all men are bound to seek Christ.

vatican.va/archive/catechism/p123a9p3.htm

That being said, a Muslim is not an atheist or idolator any more than Jews or the pagans in Act 17 with the altar to the unknown God (who St. Paul said worship God without knowing it). Since he professes to adore the Creator and not the creature, he may have supernatural faith. He can love God above all things. If he desires God’s way, truth, and life above all else, yet is mistaken as to these things, he still implicitly desire Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

We do not say all Muslims or saved, nor do we say all Christians are saved. We do say that those who are saved, are saved solely through the mediation of Christ in union with His Mystical Body.

The missions are cultivated in order to exhort all men to repent and embrace that way, truth, and life.

Because the Muslims proclaim that their God is the Creator, yet denies that Jesus is God in the flesh, God is triune, and deny that Jesus was crucified on the cross and ressurected, and deny the atonement… they are better off than other false religions who deny the same essentials of the Christian Faith. It seems Mormons should be better off the Muslims because they are closer to the truth on many other the essentials than the Muslims. Are you saying it’s easier to be saved as an orthodox Mormon than an orthodox Muslim? Are you saying God is less angry with the Muslim than the athesist?

Underdog,
This will be the last time I try to discuss something with you, as I can tell that you have either no ability or no desire to learn or discuss.

Muslims profess that they worship the same God. AS such, they are in a different place than other hethens and pagans. That does not mean that there will be any in heaven. Nor does it mean that they will all go to heaven. If they do not know Jesus through no fault of their own, then they are judged by a means known only to God. If they know that Jesus is who we say he is and deny it, they are damned.

Mormons hold to views that are either heterodox or heretical, depending on who you ask. THey are judged on what they should have known as we are, and they are judged based on how well they respond to the grace of God. You understand that it was blind luck that you were not born Muslim, or Mormon, or anything else.

Billions of people have lived on this earth with no chance to learn the Truth of Jesus Christ. Now, you will say that a Just and MErciful God would damn them because of bad circumstances. I will not.

May GOd bless you and may you have a wonderful life.

If you remove the doctrine of election and the sovereignity of God in salvation, you get man-centered humanistic ideas of what the Catholic Church currently teaches. The Catholic Church denies being semi-pelagius, but what else can you call it? It is not truth based on the Scriptures. It is a blend of partial Christianity and humanism. When that happens, God in Christ becomes less, and man become more. It is the farthest thing from glorifying God in what He has done in Jesus Christ for those who know Him.

You are totally and completely 100% WRONG because you do not even UNDERSTAND what is being said to you.

You are not grasping the salient points here, and it is your confusion (and indoctrination, which causes you to expect to hear things you are not hearing) that causes you to imagine that this discussion proves “Catholics have strayed from Biblical faith”.

Point A: Religions as systems of thought are compared and contrasted with the Christian faith. HOWEVER, the human judgment of a particular religion is not the judgment of God on the individual soul. We judge religions, we do not judge* people’s hearts.*

Point B: The reason why we do not judge people’s hearts is because the gospel transcends intellectual verbalization. For example, when a human being responds to the mercy of God as God reveals it to that person, that person is responding to the gospel (the good news- Emmanuel, God is With Us).

AND YES, the Bible most clearly does teach this.

Romans 2:12-17
12For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 **For when Gentiles, who do not have the law,by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. **15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, **God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.
**

God judges the inner hearts of men regardless of their religious affiliation, as we see in the verse above.

Romans 2:6-11
  1. He will render to each one according to his works: 7to those who) by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. 9There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11For God shows no partiality.

What’s your point with grading papers on world religions?
No particular point. If any, it would be that I think about non-Christian religions a lot these days (since I teach this course) and so naturally feel strongly about the related theological issues. I wasn’t saying that you should listen to me because I grade papers on world religions, and I think it’s rather startling that you jumped to the conclusion that I was. (Well, I’m not startled, because I’ve lived my whole life in this anti-intellectual culture. But it still seems odd to me.)

You know, I can’t help being an academic. Well, I suppose I could have chosen to do something I enjoyed less just so people on discussion forums would take me more seriously, but that would be a bit much.

No. Of course not.

Now suppose you stop attacking straw men and making personal remarks and start addressing the issues?

Edwin

It’s ok, Edwin, we still love you. 😃

I think your post does not line-up with official Roman Catholic doctrine. God created Adam in the image of God which was without flaw, nor the inclination to sin. We were not created like Adam before the fall.
Actually, it’s very much in line with it–man was created good–that is the premise of Creation. God saw His creation as good. Man fell because of Satan, and thus sin entered into the world. God sent Jesus to restore man to what he should be–in the state that Adam was. So through Jesus we are restored of that grace. It is very much Catholic in thinking.
We were created like Adam after the fall, broken with a sin nature. This is also the Catholic position on original sin.
Actually the concept of original sin as taught in the Catholic Church is that man was created with graces befitted to him; these graces were taken from him after his fall.
Here’s another way to look at it. Nobody will be in Heaven that have not been united to the biblical Jesus Christ. The Muslims believe in another Jesus or a false Jesus. The Hindus believe in a false Jesus. The Mormons believe in a false Jesus. If you believe Muslims who reject the biblical Jesus Christ will dwell with our Triune God in eternity, what would be the basis for them to be in Heaven?
The basis would be the faith in which they believe in. We go back to that premise–would God be so cruel as to put a Muslim who does not, through no fault of his own, know Christ? The operative term here is “through no fault of his own”–he had not been preached to nor know Christ in any way. Muslims who have heard of the Gospel would of course be excluded in this–they don’t have any reason to not join Christ and His Church. You do contradict yourself though in your statements, as your opening premise is that no Muslim will go to heaven, period. Then you go around and say,
Being Muslim, Hindu, Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Buddhist, Shinto, Wicka, agnostic, Satanist, athesist, pagan, etc does not send you to Hell.
So which is which? Does being Muslim send you to hell, or does it not? I am confused by your notions here. You seem to be just as confused by your own point. So is your stance then that those who do not know Christ are not going to heaven?

This is a very difficult concept to understand for any Christian. Can anyone try to explain this official Roman Catholic teaching? This statement makes the incarnation, life and death of Christ, and the ressurection to be unecessary.
Muslims aren’t saved according to constant Church teaching. There is no salvation apart from Jesus Christ or outside of His Church.
