Then again it may also be that Lebanon’s problems stem from having two powerful neighbors, Israel and Syria, who like to use it as a place to wage war against each other through militia surrogates.
And I don’t think Beirut got to be Paris of the Middle East by being full of practicing Muslims… Islam wasn’t practiced too much at all those days, not in Lebanon, not anywhere, really.

That is an interesting comment, Sister Amy. Do the signs that Islam is being “more practiced” include this terrible fighting we’re seeing everywhere? Cos Beirut was peaceful then…and Islam wasn’t being practiced much…hmmm…

Well it’s true that places were generally much more secular those days, trying to imitate the West. Islam kind of went to sleep for a while. Today it’s waking up, absolutely. And that means that there is a lot of immaturity and confusion due to the lapse. A lot more people are practicing today. And there is a shortage of trained scholars from the last generation able to teach this generation.

So, many more people are practicing today… unfortunately, many of them are practicing incorrectly.

And they get caught on ideas like jihad and governance before they understand more fundamental principles like compassion and charity.

Also, describing Islam as being peaceful or aggressive or whatever is rather misleading. If you think about it, the same time people thought Lebanon was so peaceful, there were still riots to the South.

It was a secular (nationalist) Egypt that kept going to war with Israel. A secular Iraq that invaded Kuwait…

🤷

Remember that pulling out a weed is useless unless you pull out its root.

A person who says that Islam is the problem, is like saying the dirt is responsible for growing the weeds, and so if you trample the dirt you kill the weeds. If you do that you end up killing everything in the garden, good and bad. The problem is under the surface–it’s not Islam. People need to take a closer look at the political unrest, the oppression and poverty and suffering of people to understand the extremism.
Sister Amy, what is the “problem under the surface” which inspired Mohammad to have his opponents assassinated, raid caravans, give approval to raping women of the conquered enemy as “spoils of war”, etc.?

I prefer more elevated discourse to that sort of Islam-bashing which you’re baiting me into.

Duh! That’s probably why it was called the “Paris of the Middle East”. Muslims are like vermin and whenever they gather in large hordes and infiltrate a country, they turn it into a cesspool.

And isn’t the south of Lebanon Muslim-majority, while the north is predominately Christian? Yes, it would make perfect sense that even when a country is mostly peaceful, the violent areas are where all the Muslims are.

Sister Amy, I would be happy to provide references including quotes from the Hadith. You remind me of the fairy tale “the Emperor Has No Clothes.” You keep repeating the mantra “Islam is peaceful, Islam is peaceful” over and over again but refuse to address facts. You’re a lot like Hitler, who said that if you repeat a lie often enough people will believe it. Except that Hitler deceived an entire nation, while, on these fora at least, the only one you’re deceiving is yourself, Sister Amy.

I was talking about riots somewhere else actually. A little further south, outside of Lebanon.

It must be too much trouble to actually read my posts, if all you’ve been able to synthesize out is “Islam is peaceful.”

The Islamic who attacked Mumbai weren’t tough boys after all. Reports said that they were using horse steroid to bulk them up making them macho. If you guys ever get to shake a hand of the Arabs, they are weak like heck. Without the drugs, bombs, and AK-47s, they are just a bunch of sissy.

I was thinking of the Phalange, a Christian Maronite militia, but in the context of Lebanon’s civil war. I don’t know if they still exist or if Israel still supports them.

Who brought up al-Qaeda?

I’m thinking of countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Palestine…

I mean, Hamas was democratically elected.
Let’s focus on one at a time. Shall we start with Afganistan?

Who is fighting in Afganistan? Why are they fighting?

Clearly, you don’t know your history. The Maronite Christians in Lebanon were taken by surprise when the Muslims attacked. For more than 5 years, they had to hide in the rubble of their former homes, scavenging for food. The tiny number of them who were armed weren’t able to do anything, since the Muslim forces were being reinforced by Syria, I believe it was. Israel finally decided to help them, and invaded, pushing past the Muslim forces in order to rescue as many civilians as possible. And they even rescued the injured Muslims. Then, they reorganized the few Lebanese Christians that had military training and gave them better weapons in order to defend themselves long enough to get more civilians to safety. And that was after Lebanon, the Muslims and the Christians, had made their disdain for Israel quite clear. They still helped.

Good question. Who is fighting in Afghanistan? Who is dying in Afghanistan? And why?

As far as I’m aware, who you have fighting in Afghanistan–you’ve got coalition troops, you’ve got afghani tribal militias, you’ve got the sham afghani gov’t fighting, you’ve got pakistani fighters, and if you believe the US gov’t, you might even have al-qaeda fighting there.

And Afghani civilians getting killed… but they’re not fighting. They were getting married. :bighanky:

Another wedding attack

Children dying

Before we start discussing Palestine, Afghanistan, and what have you of places, why not start asking WHO was oppressing the Caliphs when they waged oppressive wars to spread Islam, and what where the people killed if not innocent civilians?
