Why are Protestants so good with radio and TV?

I was watching the 3ABN network and they were talking about the rapid growth of their network. I began wondering and thinking about how many protestant TV and radio networks there are were I live and how they continue to grow in numbers.

I know Catholics have EWTN and Catholic Radio but neither one is broadcast locally where I live. You can get EWTN via cable with extra programming and it is on DISHTV if you can afford it.

My question is this, why are protestants so successful with radio and TV networks and Catholics so far behind? This is not about the quality of programming as much as the shear number of stations.

Is there a TV and radio gap?

I am sorry you don’t have Catholic radio where you live. In the Chicagoland area where I live we have both Christian and Catholic stations and the Catholic Radio station wins hands down. I listen to the Chrisitian radio stations for the music but after hearing the same songs over & over I switch to Catholic Radio which has the best speakers and Dr. Ray - Catholic radio psychologist guy who is so funny and wise. I also love Father John something or other (maybe starts with a C ?) He is the most dynamic speaker/teacher, I love him!! I don’t know why Christian stations are more popular - must be advertising/marketing. I am constantly telling Catholics I meet about Catholic Radio as most have never heard of it.

carol marie,

I think what you mean is that you have protestant Christian stations and Catholic Christian stations?

You do make a good point though. I have seen protestant denominations run a station and call it generically “Christian” while Catholics us the denomination name of Catholic. I think Catholics use the word Catholic to help listeners know they are recieving the truth and not just another changing ‘opinion’ in the wind?

Because it is all PROFESSIONALISM and a production. Evangelical productions make whatever they are presenting attractive and EASY to accept. Most people don’t even know what the bible teaches on salvation and prophecy. These evangelists can tell the audience almost anything with whole host of scriptures thrown in and people believe it.
Code:
But MOST evangelical entertainers teach all one has to do is "just believe" and you are "saved forever". Or they ask you to just claim your healing. But boy do they want your money if you write in and get on their mailing list.

People want a EASY religion without COMMITMENT. They don't want to be offended. Many times the preacher will say over the airwaves, "God loves you, he really does, won't you just accept Jesus?" You see what their doing? You can still live the in the same ungodly lifestyle and yet just believe. No commitment required.

While the Catholic faith teaches, you CAN'T recieve communion without confirmation. Huh? That means understanding WHAT it takes to be a Christian and ACTING on it. By coming to not only a point of believing in Jesus, but by making pennance FOR YOUR SINS and being properly baptized and anoited with the Holy Spirit by a Catholic bishop. Big difference eh? You bet.

Yes, Catholics have EWTN, but it is basically FOR Catholics and not for evangelizing . Maybe the "Coming Home" series would be the exception. Why is this? Because to become a Catholic, one doesn't become one at the drop of a hat or by reciting a quick prayer, but by INSTRUCTION over a period of time. That is the difference between evangelical braosdcasts and Catholic programing.

I think you’re referring to Fr. John Corapi. Yes, he is a great speaker and I love listening to him.

😮 Yes Yes Yes… Sorry, that is what I meant to say.

And to the other poster, it was Fr. C - not sure how you spelled it that I love listening to! God Bless. CM

I listen to Immaculate Heart radio as I’m out here on the West Coast. We get several EWTN programs, plus Ave Maria, Vatican Radio, and several other radio stations and programs. One person I truly enjoy listening to is John Martignoni on EWTN Openline on Thursdays. He cracks me up! I also really enjoy Dr. Ray on The Dr. Is In! HILARIOUS! We are so blessed to have such great radio. I just started listening on a regular basis about a month ago. I had known about Catholic Radio, but hadn’t listened. I listened to KLOVE (Protestant radio) for years, but as I learn my faith more and more I am less inclined to listen to the Protestant radio stations in my area.

Ditto. On Protestant radio, the only Catholic I’ve ever heard anything positive about was Mother Teresa.

But, Jay Seculo from the ACLJ is pretty inclusive towards us. He was extremely positve about Bill Pryor and other judicial nominees (there was usually some dead air when he mentioned that they are Catholics).

Prrotestants are “good” on TV and radio because the appeal to the EMOTIONS of rather dull-minded viewers.

The viewers are teased with an emotional outburst - they don’t have to think.

It’s all emotion!

I think it is TBN but one protestant station has Bishop Sheen on it! I try to record it and watch it on Wednesdays. Amazingly, when you look at 40-50 year old protestant entertainment, oh I mean evangilization programing, it seems old, out dated and hicksville and not good at begging for your money. With Bishop Sheen his programs look like they could have been made yesterday (except the B&W ones) ond he doesn’t beg for your cash to be “saved”. His Catholic message applies today as well as yesterday and seems like it will endure tomorrow. Praise God for honest TV evagilizers like Bishop Sheen. Even more of the others could follow him.

I don’t believe you saw Bishop Sheen on TBN or the Pat Robertson TV Network. But Pat is a little more liberal then most anti-Catholic TV hosts. I know Bishop Sheen is broadcast on EWTN for sure. Have you ever watched Fr Corapi on EWTN? He’s my Billy Graham for the Catholic Church.

Actually I will second the witness of Bishop Sheen on all things TBn they usually put him on very very late at night mind you as to not interfere with their beg fest but he is on.
TBN is pretty smart they also have Catholic Priest Father Michael Manning they don’t say anything disparaging about catholics either another smart move. Although funide pastors who pay to have their show on TBn will get their jibes about catholicism but not official TBN programming.
Beleive it or not a lot of uniformed or just naive catholics watch TBN and many send them money. WHy offend part of the paying audience so they do throw the bone of Bishop Sheen and Father Manning but overall the programming is targeted at the Pentacostal or Evangelical or Fundamentlalist Christians. You can get TBN everywhere EWTn is much harder to come by unless you have a dish.

I also live in the Chicagoland area. I only get to listen to the radio in the morning, and on Relevant Radio, the “Morning Air” program is so bad, I can’t stand to listen very long…

I have been lucky enough to be able to listen to Father Corapi, and have caught Fr. Pacwa on occasion. They are wonderful.

…but Morning Air is horrible. It was much better when Jeff Cavins hosted the show. Theresa Tomeo, and the folks who have been filling in ever since are terrible…so I listen to AM 1160 WYLL in the mornings, now.

Their “BEG FEST” :rotfl:

I will 3rd the Bishop Sheen on TBN, only they title the show…“Fulton Sheen” where on EWTN it’s “Life Worth Living” with Bishop Sheen. Big difference in the wording…one wouldn’t know he was catholic unless turning the program on.

I have satellite tv, and we have about 6 christian stations. I noticed we started getting Bringham Young University station, right in the middle (of the number channels) of the christian stations. However, we still didn’t get EWTN. I called the satellite co, fuming. In order to get EWTN, I would need to buy this and that, do this spend that…and 75 bucks later??? Horrible. So after nicely telling the gentleman about the BYU station not belonging where it was (in case anyone doesn’t know BYU is LDS), I hung up.

A few weekends later, guess what I found?? EWTN. Guess where it is located on my channel guide? NOPE, not with the other christian stations like the LDS channel, but in the middle of the spanish channels, right before HBO.

Hmmm, I’m just thankful we finally have it…we didn’t have EWTN for 3 years!

The California Catholic radio stations seem to be located in central California…away from the coast. The San Jose and South Bay area is blacked out. I was thinking of looking into SIRIUS radio but I would want to make sure I could use it both in the car and in the home because I am in the car so much. Does anybody have SIRIUS and can you use it in the home and the car?

I watch and listen to ‘live’ Catholic programming via the Internet.

give it a try.

go with God!

Remember the Protestants have been doing this a long time. Remember the 700 Club? Jim and Tammy Faye Baker? How about Jimmy Swagart? There was also a
minister on TV I think when I was a teenager (A LONG TIME AGO) who used to say “Put your haaaaaaannnnds on the screen and feel God’s power.” His name was Ernest something. So they have a long history and as some have mentioned, they tend to be very uplifitng, emotionally charged and easy to follow along. Not quite as easy to understand as Bishop Sheen who certainly must have been one of if not the first religious figure hosting a TV show.

I watch EWTN, particularly the Road Home and Living Life Abundantly (those are on when I’m watching before work). EWTN does have internet streaming for those who don’t get the radio program locally.

That’s Father John Corapi. He also has a program on EWTN television where he teaches from the Catechism on the Catholic Church, which is excellent!
