Why are so many Catholics pro-gay and pro-abortion?

I notice alot of Catholics dont see anything wrong with abortion or gay marriage. Why is this?
The Church clearly teaches that abortion is murder and it’s a very grave sin against God and human life. Homosexual marriage goes against God’s design for marriage between a man and a woman for procreation.
Do the Catholics that support this just not care? or is it out of ignorance of what the Church teaches?
Secular humanism. Moral relativism. Poor catechesis. Poor leadership from some Bishops. Spiritual laziness. Evil intent.

There are a variety of words used to describe those who are baptised but are essentially non catholic in practice…cultural, a la carte, nominal etc.

I distinguish such “nominal” catholics by use of the world “notional” Those notionally catholic are usually in practice secular humanists who have no moral objection to abortion etc.

The answer to your question is that many baptised catholics are notionally catholic secular humanists in practice.
This is true.

A few polls in America which has only 6% of the world’s Catholics. I’m sure that will be very accurate!
You can look at what Catholic in other countries think, too. However, I live in America, and so does the OP, so we’re kind of referring to Catholics in our country for the most part. You seem very uninformed on this subject. Might I suggest doing a little bit of research before trying to ridicule people about it?

Some would say that it is out of ignorance but there is no question that since 1973, the murder of the unborn has been protested against by the Church and by those in front of abortion clinics who give witness to the truth. The media sends the very strong message that there is nothing wrong with gay behavior and even celebrates it, the same with abortion but more often whenever anyone legally attempts to at least limit the killing.

It has been shown that Catholics who go to Church regularly and who are informed through legitimate Catholic sources, such as this one,

ncregister.com/message/

Are more in line with Church teaching in their daily lives.

With Catholics who put in one hour at Church a week to be surrounded by the 24/7 messages that preach an end to religion, to celebrate sexual immorality and indulge in every pleasure - well, that generally does not help.

We have fewer role models today, but there are those who are speaking up and calling for ‘radical obedience,’ like Pope Benedict. Cardinal Dolan has been a strong voice, as well as Archbishop Chaput.

Turn on Catholic radio in your car or on the internet. Be better informed about being a better Catholic, and a Catholic who is moved to act. As Pope Benedict has pointed out, we cannot afford to be indifferent either about ourselves or others.

Peace,
Ed

I think it’s because it’s easier to along with the world rather than God.

I was taught a very valuable lesson when I was a child, and I think it applies to this situation.
The right thing to do is usually not the easiest thing to do. Chastity is not easy, when the whole world is doing it, not following the churches guideline on contraceptives is not easy, it means you will have to be chase outside of marriage, raising and loving a child is not an easy thing to do , it take love, time ,selflessness on our part. I do think life is easier in the long run, if we take the road less traveled, the hard road. If we love Jesus, the hard road is made smooth by Our Lord. We learn to Love. Many have not learned this lesson.

I saw some allude to the answer without actually spelling it out. I will. If you support abortion, or gay marriage, or contraception etc. You are not Catholic. You have rejected the authority of the church, nature, and GOD. You have decided that you are the authority on these topics and whether you like it or not are in Protest against the church and her teachings. Effectively this makes you a Protestant. Many replies correctly identified the causes of this, the worst effects you won’t discover in this world.

I have no doubt some will be offended by this post. If you are one of them you need to be offended. If it takes a bucket of water over your head or a slap in the face to bring you back to reality so be it. Better to suffer it now than in eternity.

I think the answer is because they don’t understand what “to love” really means.

They have a severely defective grip on love.

If they are American Catholics, they may have an understanding and an appreciation for the Constitution-which bestows religious freedom on ALL citizens. That means that following religious tenets of any faith are a CHOICE that the individual makes.

I find it interesting that the “rugged individualism” and “freedom” arguments that go on here regarding taxes, guns and other issues VANISH when it comes time to tell people who have made no commitment to Catholicism that they must live by the bedroom and contraceptive rules of the Catholic church.

On abortion, I argue that the Pro life community has been working the wrong angle for YEARS. Ever since 1973, the strongest effort has been to elect the right politicians. Judging by the evidence, it seems to me that strategy isn’t working so well. To my mind, the majority of the effort should be placed in defining abortion in the minds of everyone as murder-without pointing to the Bible as the foundational document. You have to convince EVERYONE, not just those who believe in God-so using “God says” and Bible verses as support just doesn’t fly. We do that already-but I think more of the focus (and the money) really needs to go in the science direction instead of into the pockets of politicians who have more commitment to gaining power than to actually helping the unborn.

Perhaps so, My belief in recent years, looking at the same lack of progress you mention, is instead that “It’s our fault (my fault) that the rest of our citizens don’t defend life.”

Maybe it’s my lack of living my fatherhood so generously and quietly strenuously that my neighbors and extended family don’t immediately sense the joy and gift that life is. Maybe they see parenthood as a necessary burden because I frequently or occasionally moan about the work of parenthood, rather than living an abandoned YES to God with constancy.

Maybe they don’t see enough joy or life emanating from Catholic families. Maybe they see small stingy largely self centered families…just the same as the atheists/or/pro choice family next door. Maybe they’ve learned that “love is reciprocal” from me!

It’s my fault. In the same way that the priest scandal to a large degree is my fault, our fault…because we are lukewarm in our faith, we go to confession infrequently, and give lackluster, insincere confessions, because we contracept, we play with porn, we don’t live our faith with ever more heroic virtue…priests sense our lukewarmness…and maybe some fall off the path in a bad way because we don’t pray for them enough, or sacrifice enough, or pursue holiness with any real ardor.
