Why are so many Catholics pro-gay and pro-abortion?

Well, at least in terms of America, it’s because you live in secular nation governed by a godless Constitution which explicitly prohibits laws being written that respect any establishment of religion.

Were this not the case, the last 200+ years would’ve witnessed a religious arms race in the halls of power in this country, with Catholics, Protestants, Baptists, Jews, Muslims, and all manner of other faiths vying against one another to get their version of The Truth hammered into law. Considering that a Catholic couldn’t even get elected President until 1960, it stands to reason that you would not have fared so well in this alternate history.
In this single country perhaps. You’re kind of forgetting the rest of the world though. >_>

Also, our constitution is far from Godless, despite what the secularists have tried to make it.

Lets look at it from a real world perspective. Most of us that attend Mass at our local parish are involved to a certain degree in one way or another. It really doesn’t seem appropriate to me to bring up this kind of issue during something like “coffee and donuts” after the 10:00 a.m. Mass. So it has to be done sort of on the side. But then that speaks only to the two subjects the OP asked about. How about contraceptive usage. No one wants to hear about that one. How about no one in the confession lines. Another touchy subject. I think one of the previous posters in this thread is correct, that no one recognizes sin anymore. That thinking is clearly a product of the “Im OK, you’re OK” generation.

I think the bottom line is that people don’t want to submit to authority. They say, “No one, and no Church is going to tell me what to do in my life”, and they sometimes have a story that justifies their position whereby they’ve been hurt by the Church or are upset about scandal or whatever. That all seems kind of sad, but on the good side, there are Catholics that “eat up” everything they can get their hands on and *humbly *submit to the teachings of the Church, which I see as hope.

BUT Catholics should put their Faith first. As we have seen in most elections since the early 70s when the culture of death took over the democrat party too many Catholics put politics before faith

Big question. And not only Christian Catholics. Here’s a good as an aswer as any in a chaptered nutshell why not read: Epistle Of Saint Paul To The Romans
Chapter 1 Verses 1-31
drbo.org/chapter/52001.htm
Pretty straight forward from where I’m sitting. It makes you wonder why anyone who claims to be Christian says anything to the contrary.

I’d also add that, for Catholics in the U.S. anyway, we all see people in the public eye (such as politicians) who vocally identify themselves as Catholic, yet also are pro-choice and advocate for LGBT causes, like gay-marriage. For those who aren’t well-formed in the faith (either not knowing what the Church teaches on these issues, or believing that following it is somehow optional), they may believe that they can be faithful Catholics and support these issues which at least a sizable chunk of society has given the ‘thumbs up’ to.

This is sad.

‘Choice’ does not mean the same thing as abortion, and there is nothing gay about homosexuality.

There is an all-out war going on against the very meaning of words. Don’t fall into that trap.

I notice alot of Catholics dont see anything wrong with abortion or gay marriage. Why is this?
The Church clearly teaches that abortion is murder and it’s a very grave sin against God and human life. Homosexual marriage goes against God’s design for marriage between a man and a woman for procreation.
Do the Catholics that support this just not care? or is it out of ignorance of what the Church teaches?
What is your basis for saying a lot of Catholics don’t see anything wrong with gay marriage and abortion?

Catholics and all christians have to understand why marriage is a communion of a man and a woman. It’s not only a communion of man and woman, but a communion of man, woman and child. This is why it is a sacrament of the church. Children and procreation have always been necessary for the future of mankind and the continuing love of Our Lord. With out children in the communion then marriage is only an statement of emotional feeling, and would not be a sacrament, and would have no propose legally or religiously. Children give purpose to marriage. Since divorce and living together has become popular and we have become selfish, with no strings attached. Divorce and living together takes away a child’s place in the communion, and leaves them empty. Families have been in decline and children are left to find love, and guidance where ever they can, and we see the results in our society.

Why are some Catholics pro-abortion, the same reason secular world is, convenience, selfishness, a complete disregard for the gift God has given us, life. I also believe it was made legal by men, and for men more than women. Women are left with the sin and the emotional damage to there being, by going against natural law of motherhood. Margret Sager’s legacy live on. Men can have sex with minimal responsibility, and women suffer the damage.

So, what trap, exactly am I falling into?

Note, I did not say that I support abortion or same-sex marriage. I do not.

So what exactly have I done wrong?

Because it’s the truth. Most of those people are Catholic in name only, though, and really don’t understand their faith.

As you are stating a fact and not expressing an opinion I would like to know how many of the 1.2 billion Catholics have you interviewed on this subject?

I didn’t interview them, but I’ve looked at the results of numerous polls and interviews throughout the country. I do appreciate the attempt at condescension, though.

Well we know for sure that over half the Catholics who voted in the last election rejected the teachings of the Church

I am not sure that it’s so.

If you partitioned out of that percentage all “Catholics” who have not been to sacramental confession in the last year (a precept of the Church), I suspect that percentage would drop to single digits.

Further, if you removed the number of those “Catholics” who couldn’t name (not to mention explain) the 5 non-negotiables, that number would shrink.

If you don’t comport to the precepts, are you in any material sense Catholic?

Too many people today forget that being Catholic is not just a religious adjective. It is a fundamental identity, the True way of life.

I’ve been Catholic for only a few years so I can only comment about my impressions over that span. I think that why many people do not hold the Church as an absolute authority which can be trusted to never mislead is the scandal of the sex abuse. That has seriously hurt the credibility of the Church. Also, its easier than ever to become educated about the various mistakes that have been made by all religions over the centuries. It all kind of adds up to realizing that while people may intend to honor God and lead people to him they often make serious mistakes. I think we are living in a time where educated people are more determined than ever to take command of their own set of beliefs because of all the evils that affected religious and political organizations.

There are a variety of words used to describe those who are baptised but are essentially non catholic in practice…cultural, a la carte, nominal etc.

I distinguish such “nominal” catholics by use of the world “notional” Those notionally catholic are usually in practice secular humanists who have no moral objection to abortion etc.

The answer to your question is that many baptised catholics are notionally catholic secular humanists in practice.

There are also people who while they may believe and live their own lives in adherence to the faith, they do not wish to enlist the government in creating laws to force others to do the same. True commitment to a changed life is not made by threat of arrest for violating a law.

A few polls in America which has only 6% of the world’s Catholics. I’m sure that will be very accurate!

Overall, Catholics voted Democrat in November, but weekly mass-goers were more likely to vote Republican.
