Why are some illiegal drugs sinful?

It seems that the key is that alcoholic beverages such as wine can have valid uses and are more natural so therefore it is only their abuse that is sinful. Whereas drugs don’t have a valid use and their purpose is primarily to seek an experience and they damage the body and mind.

One glass of red wine may be healthful. Perhaps throughout the centuries, a bit of wine with meat might kill bacteria etc. Granted we have better processing for meat today.

Alcohol is also more related to food than drugs. Wine for example is from the natural fermentation of grapes. No doubt, excess alcohol is a sin, but I think a small amount has a more natural effect on the body as alcohol is not a foreign substance to the body (similar to sugar). In fact I think I heard that the body actually produces small amounts of alcohol.

So LSD, THC, PCP, heroine, and cocaine etc. do not compare to alcohol as they are foreign unnatural substances to the body. And still, excess alcohol is indeed a sin.

Chemical composition water: H2O
Chemical composition of the sugar glucose: C6 H12 O6
Chemical composition of alcohol: C2 H5 OH
Chemical composition of THC: C21 H30 O2

THC seems to be a more complex (and unnatural for the body?) molecule:

Compared to alcohol: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol
More atoms means less natural? Would you like to show some evidence?

As I pointed out, I think alcohol and sugar are related and in fact I think that the human body may actually produce small amounts of a form of alcohol. Therefore alcohol is not such a foreign substance to the body. You can see that THC is a complex molecule and as far as I know it is foreign to the human body.

Our human bodies contain lots of high-molecular weight materials. In fact, the proteins, which form every muscle fiber and cell wall in our bodies, are all highly complex, as are the neurotransmitters that power our heads.

While I am no fan of pot or or those who use it, methinks you need a better argument against it.

Over 90% of alcohol in the body is oxidized to acetic acid. The remainder is excreted (e.g. in breath). That’s one metabolite from alcohol digestion.
chemcases.com/alcohol/index.htm

THC has 100 metabolites with two main metabolites.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetrahydrocannabinol

So it seems in digestion we have one by product of alcohol, acetic acid which is the main ingredient in vinegar.

THC has two main sequential by products and dozens of other by products. The main by product 11-OH-THC must then be further broken down by the body to 11-COOH-THC: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetrahydrocannabinol

This secondary by product must again metabolized even further by the body and remains in the body for days and weeks. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/11-nor-9-carboxy-THC

So, apparently alcohol which is related to sugar and is digested to a component of vinegar is quite a bit more natural (food-like) to the body than THC which is complex, broken down in three steps, and not completely eliminated for days and weeks.

Ehhhh. You do know that there are cannabaniod receptors in the brain right. That could be taken as evidence that THC is not so “foreign” to the body. There are no “alcohol receptors” in the brain though; not to mention that alcohol intoxicates the brain cells while THC and other cannabaniods bind to the receptors to affect the senses. If you’re going to consider a chemical foreign the body, you must look more than just the atoms that make up the chemical. That’s like me saying drinking H2O2 is safe because hydrogen and oxygen make up many harmless and useable chemicals to the body, while SF6 is dangerous to breath because Sulfur and Fluorine make such hazardous chemicals to the body(in reality though we know SF6 to be inert, while H2O2 to be extremely volatile. So what you are not so familiar with the atoms, doesn’t mean you’re body isn’t.

Hi, this is exactly why it is a drug and has a powerful mind altering affect. Playing with chemicals that bind to brain cells and affect the thought process is a sin. Our minds are a gift from God.

Alcohol is processed by the liver because the body treats it as a poison.

Whereas drugs don’t have a valid use
So if you get sick and your doctor writes you a prescription for antibiotics, you will refuse to take the drug because you don’t consider healing your sickness to be a valid use?

Although I am sure there is a language translation issue, it seems the CCC distinguishes medicine from “drugs.” Medicines are used to treat illness, although they can also be abused. “Drugs” are used in health, solely for mind-altering purposes.

I think the only logical reason that the Church can say that using Cannabis is a sin is on the basis that it is illegal.
From what I’ve found on the Vatican’s website, I don’t think that’s the reason. They say politicians are important in the fight against drugs, leading me to believe they want it to stay illegal.

Hi, yes, in fact in a correction to an earlier post, alcohol is apprently broken down in two steps rather than one. Still, THC is also processed by the liver. Our bodies are created wonderfully and so can process may substances including foreign onse. Agreed, they both must be processed (THC apparently requires more processing).

If anything rather than becoming convinced that THC is as acceptable as alochol, I am becoming convinced that we should be even more cautious with alcohol.
There is no doubt that alcohol is a worse drug for society. People drink themselves to death quite often and drunk driving kills tens of thousands of people every year. Weed does not seem to cause cancer (there are studies that support this and studies that do not) but even if it does, it certainly does not cause health problems like heavy drinking. Also, people are more likely to commit other crimes when they are drunk not when they are high. The great majority of street fights seem to be caused by alcohol. Not many fights on a tuesday morning, but friday and saturday night and lots of people are fighting. The difference is alcohol. There is no doubt in my mind that alcohol is a more dangerous drug than marijuana.

Hi below is what I wrote. In context, one can see that I was referring to substances whose purpose “is primarily to seek an experience…”. (In your quote of my post you did not include this clarification ). One can see that antibiotics do not fit this description.

Marijuana can have some medicinal purposes. It can be a powerful pain killer, help people with certain mental diseases such as cerebral palsy, and it can even help certain mental issues such as anxiety (though it depends on the person).

I feel strongly that there is nothing wrong with marijuana use* in moderation* in countries where marijuana is legal, or in states where it is legal. Marijuana is a wonderful plant, a gift from God. The only reason it was outlawed in the first place was early in the 20th century to keep…well, you probably know the story of the silly “Reefer Madness” craze, so I won’t address it here.
I agree that one should not imbibe in marijuana outside the law. However, where it is legal, there is no conflict. I lived in Europe for years where marijuana has been decriminalized and there didn’t seem to be major problems.
Alcohol and nicotine are far worse than marijuana ever could be. Besides, why else would God create it, if not for us?

Hi, if I’m not mistaken, there is work to extract and or synthesize THC related chemicals for various medicinal purposes. This is fine.

The issue is the human drive to alter ones state for fun or other reasons. The Holy Spirit is our true joy. Jesus calls us to trust Him. Maybe we have some deep hurts that have weakened us so we don’t even realize why we seek an outlet in drugs. Instead of being free people have become slaves. Jesus gives us the truth about Himself, this life, and our passage to full unity with Him. The Holy Spirit offers to live in us and does live in those who cooperate with Him! We don’t need to alter our bodies with various chemicals that our bodies just need to process so that we can come back to equilibrium.

The difference with regard to “clouding one’s mind” is that one can drink alcohol limitedly, without such clouding taking place, and most users do so; whereas in the use of cannabis and similar substances, the mind effects are the reason for using it. No one smokes marijauana for the smell or taste.

I’m sorry, but this has to be absolutely rebuffed. There are medical studies that prove that any amount of alchohol impairs judgement, motor skills and slows reaction times. There is no way to consume any amount of alchohol without “clouding the mind”. It is an extremely dangerous thing to allow people to believe that they can consume a small amount of alchohol and still be safe to drive, operate machinery or make important life decisions. It takes less than 30 seconds for alchohol to go from your lips to your brain. I don’t want to get drawn in to a debate about the relative effects of one drug versus another. But, I couldn’t let that stand. I buried three friends in high school due to alchohol related deaths. Alchohol is a drug. Cigarettes are a drug. They are merely socially acceptable.
