Why are some illiegal drugs sinful?

Being drunken is clearly condemned as a serious sin in the Catechism, as pointed out previously. Having a glass of wine or two doesn’t normally get one intoxicated.

Well, I have to say this is the first time I have seen this discussion degenerate in to a chemistry contest. Well done people, well done.

Again, I don’t want to get drawn in to a debate about which drug is more dangerous than another. However, since we veered into a medical and chemistry discussion, I thought I would add the following and see if the smarter people could help me out. It has always been my understanding that there is a big difference in the way that booze and pot affect your brain. Booze actually kills brain cells. Pot only affects the functioning of the cell and only temporarily. I also understand that once a brain cell has been affected by pot it goes back to functioning properly, but can no longer be affected by pot. This is why it takes more and more pot to get the same high the longer you smoke. Also, while marijuana may pale in comparison to nicotine as a poison, the affects on your heart may be as bad.

I feel strongly that there is nothing wrong with marijuana use* in moderation* in countries where marijuana is legal, or in states where it is legal. Marijuana is a wonderful plant, a gift from God. The only reason it was outlawed in the first place was early in the 20th century to keep…well, you probably know the story of the silly “Reefer Madness” craze, so I won’t address it here.
I agree that one should not imbibe in marijuana outside the law. However, where it is legal, there is no conflict. I lived in Europe for years where marijuana has been decriminalized and there didn’t seem to be major problems.
Alcohol and nicotine are far worse than marijuana ever could be. Besides, why else would God create it, if not for us?

I’ve never been to anyone where everyone was high.
If you based it only on people in a bar, you might say so, but everyone I’ve ever seen at a bar has been quite civil. However, if you are comparing drinking in a bar to college students getting high, you probably have unreliable data. So show me a reliable source.

Hi, this is exactly why it is a drug and has a powerful mind altering affect. Playing with chemicals that bind to brain cells and affect the thought process is a sin. Our minds are a gift from God.

So I guess we’re done with Chemistry or is this a red herring? At any rate it’s false. Using substances to affect our minds isn’t a sin, hence alcohol- to make the heart merry, caffeine- to become alert, tobacco- to become alert and/or calm by the buzz, etc… Using substances to affect our minds to the point at which we lose our ability to reason is a immoral and can be grave matter.

Not true. Alcohol always clouds the mind. If you drink “limitedly” then your mind is clouded “limitedly”
The only way to not have your mind clouded at all by alcohol is to not drink alcohol at all

the mind effects are the reason for using it. No one smokes marijauana for the smell or taste.
No one drinks alcohol for the smell or taste either. If they did, they would drink non-alcoholic beer or wine and get the taste without the “mind effects”

I agree with your post SugarMagnolia. Alcohol is a DRUG. A legal drug and it changes a persons mentally, rather mild or severe depending upon your comsumption.

From my experience, since I was 14 years old I clouded my mind with all types of substances. Toured with the Grateful Dead, ect. It wasn’t until may late 20’s that I began to mend my ways (bottom out) and recover from the years of drinking and drugging only through the grace of God himself, songs in prayer, and the rosary.

Nothing here on earth can take you higher than high than God Himself.

I’d rather not be judgemental and leave what substances you use to your own conscious and God. Every choice you make has a consequence; it can effect you, others, your mind, and soul in any combination.l

One day at a time I try to live in God’s Will and that includes not listening to myself and thinking I always know what is best for myself.
