Why are you a Christian?

hi everyone

my questions for christians are; why are u a christian? what makes u chose christianity over other beliefs (athiesm, judaism, islam, hinduism etc)? what makes christianity stand out? do u think that u would have became a christian if not born as one?

When scholarship brings its razor to bear, Catholicism is the only religion to survive, though Liberal Protestantism and Reform Judaism are special cases.

We know that the Torah was not dictated to Moses on Sinai, so the Orthodox Jew must choose between his religion and scholarship. It is pretty obvious that the Koran was not dictated by the angel Gabriel, so the Musim must choose between Mohammed and rational analysis of the text. Hinduism, as the name imlies, is simply a name for the ancient pagan religion of India. Though individual Hindus often believe many wise things, we know that the world is not full of gods and divine figures as Hiduism suggests.

However the gospels and letters of the New Testament were written in the first century and describe a man who lived, and who may have risen from the dead - the only reason for rejecting the Resurrection as an historical fact is if you disbelieve in miracles.

Liberal Protestantism can be rejected on other grounds, notably the shallow, culture-bound nature of its moral rules. It is hard to believe that, in a hundred years time, we will still be talking about homosexual bishops, for example. Extreme social phenomena don’t usually last long.

That leaves atheism. Atheism is an intellectually credible alternative to Catholicism. That’s where the intellectual debate is at.

I can’t give reasons for rejecting atheism here. Note that my book, which you can link to from my sig, does not give reasons for rejecting atheism, it refutes some arguments commonly employed by atheists, which is a rather different thing. You used the “Wicca” argument, by the way.

I would like to think I would be a christian even if I wasnt born into it.

First and foremost I am a christian because God chose me to be adopted into His kingdom. I couldnt have chose if He was not drawing me to Him.

The one thing christianity has that no other religion has is a way to deal with sin. We are all horrible people and deserve hell but God made a bridge for us, a way for us to be forgiven of our sins, a wat to have eternal life. Christianity is all about LOVE. Reaching people through love.

The biggest kicker for me was the New Testament, there is not one principle in the NT I disagree with, to me it is directly the word of God. The Old Testament of course I believe is God breathed, but I couldn’t see basing my entire faith in God on the first five books of the Old Testament. And the Koran kind of tries to mesh all of them unsuccessfully.

So the NT got me reading, and Christ for my salvation made perfect sense to me.
 
Not only was I born a Catholic, baptized , (thank you ,Lord) :gopray: with Communion and confirmed. (Thank you Lord) :gopray2: but I truly believe once you are an adult, you make up your own mind. However, once you know THE TRUTH, your history, everything reveals itself to you and makes sense. For me I was a lax Catholic for years. Sort of a “Cafeteria Catholic” (pick and choose what you want to do). I began to read The Bible, The Early Church Fathers, The History of my faith The Saints, John Henry Newman (He was a Catholic convert and wrote a book on our history, proving Christ started the Catholic Religion), and all this aside, it truly was my love in my heart ❤️ sort of a calling that makes me what I am today.
I love my faith, The Holy Mass, the doctrines, the authority, my beautiful Vatican and it’s history, the one true Holy and Apostolic church that Jesus Christ started. The Eucharist being The Real Presence, The Blessed Virgin etc…
There are 1.5 billion Catholics for a reason.

The word Christian means “follower of Christ” and what better way to get to Heaven than to follow Christ. 😃
Granted, I take lots of detours and such but I always seem to manage to get back on the path to Heaven. God HAS to have patience, that’s all I can say. 😉

Being a Christain is an answer to a call from God. I was not born into a Christian household.

firstly thanks for the replies everyone!

you say that God has built a bridge for us to be forgiven of our sins, but doesnt such a bridge exist in other religions too, forexample to regret and repent to somewhat reach closer to God? Aren’t other religions about loving others aswell?
 
I was born and raised Catholic(Yep, thanks parental units:D ). That didn’t stop me from checking out all different religions when I was in college. Honestly, yes I think I would be a christian, more specifically, a Catholic. The more I learn, the more I am convinced that I am in the right place.
 
Catholicism was the only religion that could keep from contradicting itself/reality as I continued to investigate it…

why could u not base ur entire faith on the first five books of the Old Testament?

That is correct, without offending anyone, I am sorry to say that is correct. They do not or stubbornly will not follow the one true faith of Jesus Christ. They will not research their history because if they did, they would be afraid that they have been following someone in sheep’s clothing. We are the only religion that you can trace back to 2,000 years, bishop to bishop, pope to pope, all the way to St. Peter himself. Every other religion was either through an arguement or a fight. Their Bible is misinterpreted, that is a fact. (There is evidence that The King James Bible is indeed loaded with misinterpretations.) But I cannot blame them either, their pastors misguide them, it truly isn’t their fault. God Bless everyone.:blessyou:

i have read small sections of the Pentateuch, but i am curious as to why you do not base ur faith in the five books of the Old Test when you say such a revelation was God breathed.

i see, but how would u know that Jesus would get u to heaven, and not Ghandi, Muhamed or the Buddha? wot makes u think heaven exists?
