It seems like what steve b has been saying about counting colored beads to determine the truth of Holy Scripture is to be taken figuratively and not literally, which is how some scholars take much of what is written in the Gospel of St. John. Some of the gospel is historical of course, but much of what is said in the fourth gospel does not align itself easily with what is reported in the Synoptic Gospels.
It was a method of voting.

Scroll down to “Methodology” for the bead bit.

Specifically, what in John’s Gospel, is not true?

I’m the opposite. I don’t like the welcoming process in many churches, where they feel a need to point out the new visitors during service in some way or the other, and dispatch someone to talk to you. I prefer quiet reverence and predictable process - that way you don’t need a guide, you just follow the usual steps.

We tried a new independent church a few years ago, within a few minutes my wife and I were SURROUNDED - by what I assume was the designated welcoming committee, and we were invited to dinner. We went to dinner, but it was uncomfortable - you sense you are under a microscope, so we never went back.
I understand where you are coming from. The problem is, in small churches, they get very excited about any new faces they see because when the numbers start dwindling, they see it as their church is dying. I think people are attracted to ‘mega-churches’ because they can be inconspicuous.

No, but you are kind to ask.

Health issue with my wife’s brother. Time is limited. Prayer the only recourse, now.
Just read this a few minutes ago. I’ll add a belated prayer.
