Why bother to pray?

“Ask, and it will be given to you… knock and the door will be opened to you.” Jesus’s own words (Matthew 7:7).

How do we ask? How do we knock? Through prayer surely… Jesus IS telling us to pray. Would He tell us to pray if there was not some benefit in doing so? No.

It is just that in our infinitely limited human understanding we so often fail to recognise that benefit and often start to question if there is merit to our prayers.

Rest assured there is benfit - if for no other reason than that Jesus himself tells us this.

Thank you Patrick! 👍

God knows already but He doesn’t want to spoil you. If you need something, ask Him and if it is right to be given, He will give to you at the right time. God knows but He still wants us to pray because prayers help establish our relationship with God.

Don’t ask this God for anything. That way you’ll never be disappointed and you’ll never owe him any favours.

well, He doesn’t “need” anything from me. I rather need Him to survive. I benefit from my prayers not God. God is perfect and He needs no change. I am imperfect and I need change and so it is beneficial and “cost-free” to go to the “perfect” God in prayers.

Apparently he needs your love, adoration, worship and eternal praise.

you are right! but He doesn’t “need” those to survive. He is perfect without my love and He is perfect without my worship and adoration. On the other hand, I NEED Him to survive. I cannot survive without Him but He is perfect without me.

You’d be surprised how strong the human will can be, even in the absence of belief in any Gods.
