My guess would be that it’s because it is meaningless, with respect to the historicity of the Holocaust. Hilberg didn’t base 3 vols of work on a tale told by two people.

I post at other websites and never see the Jewish Holocaust brought up. I come to a website to fellowship and discuss with Catholics and in my short time here I’ve seen this topic brought up in more than one thread.
I find this disturbing. It upsets me to see some Catholics appear to live up to negative stereotypes about Catholicism being anti-Jewish. I don’t see any of this type of talk at other sites.
Why is that? Does conservative Catholicism and anti-Semitism go hand and hand?

Why is it important to you to know how many Jews were killed in World War II?
Are you familiar with the logical fallacy called Argument of the Beard? That occurs when someone starts arguing about how many hairs it takes to make a beard. When people agree that it takes, say, 1,000, this person argues, What if you have only 999, that isnt a beard? and goes on and on until someone slaps him upside the head and changes the subject.
The point is not how many dead Jews it takes to make a Holocaust. The point is, why does it matter to you?

It matters to me when people are talking about the bishop who claims that the numbers are quite smaller than thought. That’s all. He has a right to his opinion, he must have evidence of this, but it is not my opinion. God forbid anyone speak out about the Holocaust.

Clearly, your question is based on a false assumption. People can (and some do) have different opinions about the Holocaust.
People who say ridiculous things (I think some mentioned the example of Protestants who say that the Pope is the anti-Christ; another example is Catholics who say that all non-Catholics are going to hell) are often ridiculed by others. I’m not sure I see anything strange about that.

There were only about 8-10 million jews living in areas that were under Nazi occupation.
The Holocaust was the systematic, bureacraticly administered murder of the jewish people. That is why it is a “big deal” (responding to other posts, not yours).

I applaud your openess, your love of the Jewish people and your thirst for truth. And I am sure that some of your best friends are jewish. Out of curiosity why are you choosing to criticize jews for their reaction to Bishop Williamson when the Pope has demanded that he recant this view?

Williamson did a whole lot more than quibble about numbers - he denied that any at all died in gas chambers, which is silly, the chambers existed and were found and documented after the war, same with the bodies of gassed Jews, and containers of the gas used (Zyklon B).

What is there to have a different opinion about? This would be a conspiracy of the largest magnitude for it to be as inflated as some would have us believe. The Holocaust is the seminal moment of the 20th century.

Often the reason people have come up with elaborate ways and reasons to deny the holocaust is anti-Semitism…plain and simple. Why shouldn’t nonsense be called nonsense.
There are also people that have what they consider to be logical and scientific reasons for denying that the earth is round or that mankind has ever left it (quite elaborate rationale and “proofs” that the moonshots and all subsequent space shots are faked). Those who deny the holocaust are in that category with the added bonus of some racism thrown in.
The Pope was quite right to quickly condemn that Bishop’s stupid statements that were unbecoming a priest let alone a Bishop. Once again the Holy Father has shown himself to be a man who speaks out forcefully (as he did on Islam). I am becoming a fan of Pope BXVI. I pray God gives him many more years.
