Why cant God just communicate with us directly?
He did do that, and we blew it back in the garden. Now we have to get ourselves to heaven to have that “face to face” time that mankind once was worthy of, but now needs to work for.

In the meantime - we have His Holy Church to guide us.

God can do anything, right? It wont matter if there are 7 quadrillion people.

At least communicating with God directly would ensure us that he exists, and that we will know which religion is the right one.
We have to be careful here. God loves us and does not want to force (thwart our free will) us to love Him.

Catholics understand God to be Almighty.

There are things He cannot do:

He cannot lie
He cannot deceive or be deceived
He cannot be unjust

No. Im talking about literally hearing god. just like the prophets.
I think one reason that God may not communicate with us directly in an audible voice “just like the prophets” is that the voice communicating with us may be that of the great deceiver, Satan, as Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 11:14: “And no wonder: for Satan himself transformeth himself into an angel of light.” And Jesus says in Matthew 24:5: “…because many will come using my name and saying, “I am the Christ,” and they will deceive many.” And I think another reason that God may not speak to mankind “just like the prophets” is that he simply doesn’t need to, since He already has said through His prophets and His Son (God Incarnate) everything mankind needs to understand about knowing His love and spending eternity with Him.

Still haven’t answered the question. Details are important. Just what would satisfy you that he did speak. I can think of many ways he could speak directly and there would be some who would still doubt.

What do you think?
what about something like a ghostly apparition or a burning bush and a booming sound that says “SOPHION! SOPHION! KNEEL FOR THE GROUND YOU ARE STANDING ON IS HOLY!”.

and then i reply “God”?

and then he goes on introducing himself and telling me what he really wants from me.

Yep – the story of Gabriel’s visit to Zechariah in Luke chapter 1…!

Zechariah’s response to Gabriel was “how shall I know this?” In other words, he was telling Gabriel, “I don’t believe what you’re telling me – prove it to me!”.

You know the result of this, don’t you? He was struck mute for nine months…
verse please. thank you.

God speaks to us through the Church.

Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me. (Luke 10:16)

The Church is the mouthpiece of Christ.

-Tim-
why the need for a mouthpiece?

he should do it again so that the modern world can hear him.
He is. . .but nobody’s listening!

He appears to you evertime you go to Mass and receive Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist but because you can’t physically see Him, He is probably speaking to you the way He spoke to Thomas. Selective hearing will not hear God only the eyes to your heart will.

How many signs does He have to give this faithless generation?

why the need for a mouthpiece?
God is immaterial. He makes instrumental use of material things.

Why are you so partial to a burning bush, ghostly apparition or booming sound? (Post #25)

God has to speak on your terms, not his?

He is probably speaking to you the way He spoke to Thomas.
no. actually in the stories that Unbelieving Thomas had to see jesus with his own eyes before he believed. and he still a saint after that! 😃

thats just an example. someone asked.

it doesnt matter how as long as its LITERAL COMMUNICATION.

just like the so called prophets.

He can. He has. The term is “locution,” if you want to google it some.

The problem lies in deciding who, exactly, is speaking when you hear a voice. Is it really God? Is it mental illness? Is it Satan? C’mon, Satan appeared to St. Pio as the Virgin Mary! Look how easily people fall for fake emails. A disembodied voice is even harder to verify.

I have not read all the responses yet, so please forgive me if I’m repeating what’s already been said.

But to answer your posted question, He has. Often, we just don’t listen because we want or expect or even demand a specific message, in a specific way. Instead of really trying to hear what God has already said and is saying now, we’re too busy listing all the ways He could “prove Himself” to us.

And still, what would it prove if He did speak directly to us? Many would still dismiss His words as a hallucination or a trick or whatever other excuse we could come up with, and would require more and more “proof” in specific ways, yet still never come to believe. If we sincerely seek the truth (which is difficult to do), then God will give us the “proof” we need, even if it’s *not the proof we think we wanted originally *(often, it’s an experience that’s difficult to explain, and only applies to the person involved, anyway–similar to being in love).

God has already given us what we need to have a relationship with Him, if we choose to do so. He wants a relationship with us, but He is not going to** force **us to believe–He gives us a choice so that we can truly choose to love Him. It’s not love if we have no choice.

Too often, we ignore all the blessings He has given us, all the ways He has already spoken to us, and all the ways He has already shown His love for us, because we want Him to do it our way. He’s left us messages, love letters. He’s given us signs and witnesses and experiences that show He will be there with us when we need Him, and that He will love us and forgive us whenever we’re ready to come home to Him. He answers our prayers (though not always the way we expect or the way we think we want them answered, so we may miss it). He has already shown us how much He loves us through His sacrifice. Yet we still want to sit on our backsides with our arms crossed and say, “Prove it.” I know, because that’s what I did for a long time.

It’s a lot like the manipulative wife/husband who says to a very loving spouse, “If you** really **loved me, you would do (insert whatever),” which really translates to, “Do what I want you to do, when I want you to do it, and then I’ll love you. Temporarily.” But even when you do what they want, what happens? Are they happy for long? Well, maybe only as long as you keep doing what they want, and don’t do anything they don’t like (even when it has nothing to do with them). But you cannot count on them to be there when the going gets tough. It’s neither love nor trust that a relationship like that is built upon, but only control. We, as human beings, like being in control–or at least, thinking we are. It’s difficult to sacrifice that, because it seems safe. Comfortable. Reasonable. It means we don’t have to change or grow or do anything that we don’t want to do. We want God to come to us on our terms, so that we can remain in control (or at least keep thinking we are).

That’s not the kind of relationship we should have with God, and He knows that’s not what we need from Him. He wants us there for the long run–not just during “fair weather.” He knows that we will need to grow in many ways to become better people, but going through those changes isn’t always fun, or easy, or comfortable. If we start out by getting whatever we want dropped in our laps, then when trials come along, would we really have the strength and faith to stick around and rely on God? Probably not. More likely, we would blame Him for allowing us to suffer, or stop believing in Him (and sometimes we do these things anyway).

So He allows us to choose whether or not to seek Him out, to love Him, to truly be free, when we are ready to open our hearts and take those steps. Like any good relationship, it’s not always easy, it’s sometimes uncomfortable, and it requires a response from us. But it’s worth it. :heaven:

HTH.

I think He does. Most of us don’t listen. And many who might otherwise are taught to doubt their own intuition and conscience and instead rely heavily on dogmatic interpretations, for better or for worse. The way God has communicated with me has been through sensing that goes beyond the obvious 5 senses. Sadly, many people would say I’m crazy bc it’s not something everyone experienced. I think we need to trust that God is bigger even than our church, something many conservatives would misunderstand and accuse me of making things up as I go.

if God speaks to all of us then it would be very easy filtering out the false ones.
actually the false ones would be very confused, hearing two contradicting voices! two opposing ideas!

and thats why you have all these thousands of religions today. nobody speaks so people end up imagining things, making things up. god’s message becomes a popularity contest sometimes ending in war. it becomes a matter of accident…catholics for being born into it.
