Nope. They seek to preach the Word of God to us and tell us our doctrines are false. They claim they are right, and we got it wrong. They should be treated with respect. The only I don’t respect is their insistence that our religion is pagan, or worst Apostacy.
Manny, even here - don’t you see that they are motivated out of love when they tell you this? They
believe that we are doomed to hell - and while I
certainly disagree with them, and while I certainly get very annoyed when I am attacked by protestants and others who don’t share the faith with me, that doesn’t excuse any sulking or attacks coming from me.
Most of the time when we explain our faith to them. They will say, you are taking the Scripture out of context, or the ECF out of context. Or say the ECF are un-Biblical. If they want to understand, they should say. Oh, I see. I get out now. Even if we correct them, they still say we are wrong.
How many times should we forgive someone? Seventy times seventy. Do they need to ask us for us to forgive them? No. They don’t even need to know that we are forgiving them.
Yes it is very annoying when people ask you to explain something and then refute your explanations… but perhaps you can also see there that many people are still honestly trying to learn. If they don’t understand your explanation, or they have an objection, you want them to say “Oh I see, I get it now”?
It would be a lie for them to do so, because they
don’t get it! Maybe they
do want to learn, but they need
us to help them get past the misconceptions they’ve been raised with!
Should we accept people who tell lies about our Church?
Yes!!! Accepting the people does not mean that we accept the lies! Certainly, confront them in their dishonesty. But don’t… don’t attack them, don’t run away and sulk, don’t ignore them.
Maybe they don’t
know that they are telling lies; maybe they’ve been told the same lies, and maybe they believe them. Correct them - gently!
Maybe they
do know that they are telling lies; still, correct them gently. If for no other reason than that we don’t know who is aware of their misconception and who is not… yet also because even those who purposefully spread lies about the Church might be struck by our loving behavior and realize the shame of what they are doing - and be converted!
What hatred? I said I was sadden. Sadden and hatred are two different emotions.
I don’t mean to say that you’ve purposely acted with hate, but honestly - if I read over this thread (the entire thing), and I were protestant, I would be convinced by now that you as well as a few other people who’ve been posting here hated me.
I would feel, if anything, pushed away from the Church because I couldn’t get a loving answer to my many questions (when I was converting, I was lucky to have the singly most
patient person in the universe answering my questions and objections - I would never have gotten to the Easter Vigil without his loving explanations and gentle guidance).
I would feel discouraged from asking people questions, I would decide to continue hating Marian devotion in my heart (if I had disliked it to start with) but never seek the reason why people practice it, and I would be in a worse place than where I started. I would be too uncomfortable to ask why people do things or to let them know what I had been (mis)taught.
I would be one of those who really
would “leave [you] alone with [your] private devotions”, and I would never again ask a question concerning that devotion because I would be too afraid to do so.
