Why can't women simply say "I'm not interested." to men?

I’ve learned other effective ways to make it clear to a guy that I’m uninterested without outright saying it. One thing that I’ve done that works is to just make it clear to him that I’m only willing to hang out as friends, and that seems to do the trick. I repeat it several times usually too to make sure that he knows where I stand and that I’m interested in nothing more than friendship.

And I agree with previous posters that us females often don’t say a straight-up no simply because we don’t want to come across as harsh. We’re not trying to “kill you slowly,” as some have brought up. We just don’t want to hurt your feelings. If you guys prefer a flat out no, please let me know! I really do want to know what you all really think so that I can keep it in mind going forward.

I’

I’m actually a proponent of couples marrying early. I don’t believe in the whole ‘make sure you are economically sound or that you know yourself’ mindset… I have to believe that these things are cultural, and that yes, it may be that its better for those in that culture to marry economically sound and to be older and know themselves, but however, its not true in all circumstances and certainly not for all cultures. I just think our culture here in the states is particularly very entwined with materialism and that causes a lot of problems in marriage that was not there before. I think because of our culture, we do not fully mature until much later, which is causing problems. I would say that if people began to be self sufficient and family orientated, that might change… but the family itself must be healthy- that is, they must be God-fearing.

A few points:

**–I’m also not necessarily against early marriage (was married at 22), but I like to see a couple be at least one year out of college (or the equivalent for the military or trades) at the time of marriage, just because it’s hard to tell how tell how a prospective spouse will deal with adulthood and real financial responsibility if they haven’t done it yet. I am particularly against the idea of marrying people right out of their parental home or college dorm. (My dad married my mom in college and while they’re quite happy, many years of rockiness were caused by the fact that he was so disappointed that my mom wasn’t the sort of housekeeper and cook his mom was. If he had married her as a young adult living on her own, a lot of that would not have been news to him. But then, there’d be no me, most likely!) **
**–It is actually common in traditional culture for it to be crucial for the man to be well-settled financially. While traditional culture has often been much more relaxed about younger brides than we are, in traditional culture, it has also often been the case that women are unable to marry without dowries. (The dowerless girl is a popular heroine, whether in Fiddler on the Roof or Pride and Prejudice. In literature, true love overcomes all, but it’s in the books because having no dowry has traditionally been a huge obstacle to marriage for women.) While that dowry system may sound very unfamiliar, I would argue that in today’s US, a college education and a career have replaced the dowry as a stumbling block for women–without those things, it has become very difficult for a woman in the US to marry well. I’m not saying that that’s good, but it is how things are these days.
–In today’s US, the rate of divorce for very young (i.e. late teenage) brides is very high. So, if a single man is anxious about the risk of divorce (and that is a huge preoccupation among the Dalrock guys), then he should avoid very young women.

I can understand the lure of porn to men, but I just wish that man men realize that as soon as they agree to use porn, they have agreed to think of woman as their possessions and objects to use, that women* become* a nothing that are only good as long as they are beautiful and horny for them. When they do that, they give free reign to those thoughts and it clouds their mind set and woman can pick up on it. I think this is why we have such problems. Men excuse their lust thinking its normal, and women can’t bond with a man who thinks that way. Its just impossible for a woman to excuse a man’s lechery and still have an ounce self respect- and self respect is what makes them beautiful and alluring in the first place!!!

**Those are very interesting points.

At Dalrock (and similar) there is a lot of concern that if a single woman is older (i.e. 27+) then she will have had a lot of sexual partners and be unable to bond with a husband, and hence be a huge divorce risk.

However, you are quite correct that pornography may also impact the ability to bond. Hopefully, not permanently!

Women DO say they’re not interested all the time. Men don’t want to hear it.
The result is 38 pages of angst and over 560 posts trying to explain it to them.
Pointless.

Yes, it’s really a lot more straightforward than the 38 pages so far makes it out to be.

If you ask a woman out and you get an equivocal response (eg “I’m really busy right now”) then why not ask a follow-up question(s) to extract a more direct answer?

guy: would you like to go to dinner on Saturday night?

girl: I’m really busy at this time, with work and family commitments, so it’s just not a good time for me.

guy: would you like me to ask you again in say a couple of months?

girl: “yes” OR “no” (or something to that effect).

Now, if the girl likes you but she actually is busy, then the follow-up question will not be an issue.

On the other hand, if she is trying to brush you off, then you’ve lost nothing in pushing for a more direct answer anyway.

Yeah.

I’d add that any hesitation or lack of enthusiasm in the final answer is probably a no.

You should also be telling this to men. Men are just as likely to consider all women as the same.
Show me where they are at and I’ll gladly tell them. I don’t pick and choose favorites.
Not to over comment on this thread, but it’s not exactly bizarre for a serious Catholic woman to be encouraged by friends to consider becoming a nun.
I’ve never heard such a thing, but even if women were encouraged to become nuns I doubt the only reason is because some guys just want to see her not get married to another guy. Do you not hear how ridiculous that sounds? That’s like saying women get gushy over a guy becoming priest so no other women can have him. It’s disturbed and non-standard thinking in most circles. I spent 3 years in Catholic Ministry in college and never once was some absurdity like what I heard hear spoken.
And yet, there are quite a number of CAF posters that are regulars at Dalrock.
And you’ve got statistical data to backup this claim? If so, show it please.
That’s a rather strong stance on something that is a legitimate vocation for a woman.
Look at the context. She said they wanted her to become a nun so no other man could have her. That’s sick reasoning and far from the norm.

Eh, you know people can go over to Dalrock, read the threads, and see the Dalrock commenters posting CAF threads, saying vile things about CAF posters like BEL and myself, talk about having multiple throwaway CAF accounts, and making plans to go troll CAF in teams.

It’s particularly charming when men that call themselves Christians use vulgar sexual languages to talk about women. Blech!

That’s not invisible, you know–everybody can read that if they google CAF and Dalrock.

I think I’ve finally got this crazy chick to stop contacting me without me telling her to take a hike.

Lol I guess I see how hard it is for women to say no upfront. All those desires to not hurt the other’s feelings, just to let them down gently without out any acrimonious feelings.

Although I’m pretty sure if I started talking to some chick I met at church like this who was showing no interest, and then tried to justify my actions by being the one with loving intentions and turn it back on this woman as being in the wrong, she’d be up in arms, telling that hypothetical girl to “you go girl!” as she told me to take a hike, told all her friends was a creeper I was, etc.

Of course, I get it, me big strong man, me could hit her over head with rock and take her back to cave, she has right to be scared.

Great!

That was a little confusing, but have you actually witnessed this in person?

I’ve seen the manosphere guys talking a lot about “nuclear rejections” but I personally haven’t ever witnessed one and I’ve certainly never done one myself (even when I really should have, actually).

I can imagine it happening, but only if there were some of the following present: 1) inappropriate physical contact 2) violation of personal space 3) physically cornering or 4) asking in front of an audience. Asking any sensitive question in front of a group is usually a bad idea.

Right.

I’m glad that we’ve cleared that up for you.

It is really irritating to hear (on the one hand) all sorts of talk about how women just aren’t careful enough about keeping themselves safe, and on the other hand, to hear all of the complaining about women being cold and standoffish and unfriendly.

A big part of personal safety is being careful about who we allow into our lives and what places we go to. A lot of women would be well served by being less friendly and trusting than they currently are.

I guess women don’t use the nuclear option with men who just send them hundreds of texts, calls and facebook messages. Maybe they just block them? But when it’s not at that unwanted physical level I guess there’s a way for the unwanted person to pretend they were just trying to be nice, so if the person goes nuclear it end up making them look like a jerk/jerkette.

Welcome to my world and that of every fellow guy I know these days (yep… even the alpha ones). I personally have experienced women who use fear of the creep label to completely diminish my overall capacity as a human being. It’s like guys can’t even talk to anyone without either being friendzoned or made to feel like they’re harassing them even though they’ve said the same thing to dozens of other dudes in the same room. (Why these women just don’t up and declare all men as pigs is beyond me unless they’re waiting for Mr. Right or think their current Mr. Right can do no wrong.)

It’s why I don’t care for whatever’s system society has in place as much as I used to. I may not know what it’s like for the American girls on this site but this is one Pinoy dude’s experience laid bare. It’s all bound to fall apart and I’m better off just keeping my own approach simple when all ideological hell breaks loose.

Lots of unreciprocated messages always look crazy, no matter what the gender of the person is. And they leave an undeniable digital trail, which is helpful.

I know–crazy!**

So basically, any woman who does not accept your advances is being unreasonable.

How dare they just want to be your friend!

It actually is. No, really. I’m laughing in disbelief.

But then again, you would be too if you saw the idiosyncrasies of Filipino class-culture struggles. The idiosyncrasies of the dating culture already make for a big powder keg but really, it’s something so bad that you can only witness it to believe it.

No it’s more like how they treat the friendzone as a permanent hell without care for how much ridicule they’re setting a poor guy up.

You know what’s even crazier!? I’ve seen people on this site declare this to be the reason why women and men shouldn’t even be friends to begin with! :whacky:

No it’s more like how they treat the friendzone as a permanent place without care for how much ridicule they’re setting a poor guy up.
If she is not interested in dating you, why wouldn’t the friendzone be permanent? 🤷

I don’t understand at all what you are talking about.

They thought marriage was permanent too. So, how’s the culture war against divorce going for y’all? 👍
I don’t understand at all what you are talking about.
Kinda proving the point that your best bet of understanding anyone’s dating situation is to be their next door neighbor. Literally. 👍

You are rambling (and ranting).

To be frank - at the risk of offending, but with the intent to help - if you talk to people like this in real life, I can’t imagine any woman would want to date you. Even if your dating experiences in the past have been negative, remaining bitter about them is not the way to change your luck.

That’s pretty much the only thing you can do when you’re talking dating. There’s no real advice to be shared. 👍 (Yep, I say this even for those dating advice blogs. They’re just as much rant-y and ramble-y.)

Your help is appreciated but not necessary. Quite frankly my bitterness, negativity, and lack of luck is due to (at least partly) taking your sort of help instead of just helping myself. I’ve let people like you present to me how women think and I only ended up the worse for it. Once again, you act like you know how people react in my real, personal life when I’ve had more support for my new approaches as compared to what you’re suggesting.

Remember the weaponization of the creep factor I just talked about it? You’re doing it right now. Maybe where you’re from it’s done a lot of good. But where I am, it’s emasculating people’s initiatives and demonizes men for asserting themselves as human beings and not just because they’re men.

Honestly, I really don’t understand why a lot of you waste your time trying to counter and oppose the things I say on this matter when really, anything we say isn’t nearly as effective as the words of people personally closer to you.

Heck, here’s my only real advice to the OP and anybody who wants to further talk dating on these forums: Don’t bother.

Talk to your spiritual director. Parents. Don’t involve online strangers into your drama any more than you have to. Stick to discussing it privately with people because it’s easier to hold each of yourselves accountable for whatever happens.
