Why Cardinal Becciu’s Resignation Wasn’t Surprising

ANALYSIS: The curial official has been linked to several instances of financial scandals in the last six years.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis’ decision to accept the resignation of Cardinal Giovanni Becciù as prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints came as little surprise and considerable relief to those involved in trying to improve Vatican finances.

Plenty of dubious Vatican financial cases have emerged in recent years, and often the Sardinian prelate’s name has been in some way connected with them — closely followed by his strenuous denials.

Although no official reason has yet been given for his dismissal, which included removal of “rights connected to the cardinalate” (he technically remains a cardinal, but the Vatican did not communicate in its dismissal announcement which specific rights and privileges have been removed), informed sources told the Register Sept. 24 the Pope’s decision is “clearly connected” with some of these financial scandals.

This news that he resigned has just occurred. I saw no story on it in the forum. I also went to find a nonsecular media report on this.

I read about the resignation last night in La Nación .
The Pope has accepted it.( that I hadn’t seen last night)
Thanks Victoria…

According to Fr Z, the Pope fired him. However he is still a titular Cardinal, without rights.

This move is probably about 3 or 4 years too late, maybe more, but at least it got done finally. This guy was a big enemy of Cardinal Pell’s efforts at financial reform and his railroading of the Vatican audit years ago should have been a huge red flag that he was up to no good. He was always close to the Pope so the evidence now must be overwhelming against him if he was indeed fired. He probably only managed to survive this long since he was so close to Pope Francis, but it looks like he could no longer turn a blind eye to the Cardinal’s schemes.

I wish this change would actually affect the causes of my favorite saint causes in the pipeline, like cause Archbishop Sheen to get beatified, but sadly I somehow doubt it will make a dent.

You have to wonder about the timeline. At the end of 2014 Cdl Pell had ordered an audit of the IOR then 6 months later, Victorian police suddenly find an accuser of Pell.

Im not one of those you normally find cheering for this Pope but it cannot have been easy to decide to fire a Cardinal that he only appointed 2 years ago and to whom he has given very important tasks. Bravo Francis! And while I’m cheering, Bravo on the latest crackdown on eurhanasia!

I hope this change would actually affect the causes of my favorite saint causes, like cause Father Peyton, to get beatified. A movie will be out on him in October, I understand.
