This in depth survey on immigration is worth reading

Broadly it shows what the american public wants:
  • support DACA
  • support a secure border
  • end lottery and chain migration (except immediate family)
  • go merit based
  • reduce total numbers
Trump views here are mainstream, it explains why he won in spite of his many personality faults.

While Dems may try pander to the extreme wing, in the end they will cave and give what the public wants.

The research shows my personal views are also very mainstream

Trump’s views as mainstream must explain why his base now calls him “Amnesty Don”. The jury is still out on whether DJT will yet cave to his base. Today is Thursday. Tomorrow is another day. And it’s out on whether Paul Ryan will waive the Hastert rule and actually bring forth any bill that may or may not yet come out of the Senate that could pass the House without requiring solely Republican votes. The last time Ryan failed to do so.

Interesting times,

I think most will accept the exchange, make DACA legal in exchange for switching to a merit system and getting the wall.

I don’t believe the comment

The last negotiated GOP deal was by the Gang of Eight, they cut off sponsorship of siblings only but gave a pathway in return for 11 million.

This time the WH is asking to cut it off chain migration for parents, siblings and adult children in exchange for a pathway for just 1.8m Dreamers.

Sounds like Trump has negotiated a much better deal for conservatives.

Compromise is an essential part in making a deal, where both sides have power.

Note that it’s NOW IMPOSSIBLE to kick the bucket down the road as Congress has done for many years, letting the issue fester. By ending DACA Trump set the stage and has forced a showdown between GOP and DEMs.

The clock is ticking and a compromise will be reached.

That’s my view as well. It seems like as good a compromise as Democrats and moderate Repulicans are going to get. In the end no one wants to see the Dreamers put in jeopardy, but they’re going to have to give the President his wall.

Plus none of this stops a future POTUS and Congress from increasing both refugee and immigration visa numbers, as the world changes. Like the tax cut, it’s directional but temporary.

The Democrats have been used to taking without giving in the past deals. A big reason why is that they’ve been supported by big business on both sides of the aisle. But Trump won on this issue because the Democrats (and RINO’s as well) refused to see things as mainstream America sees them. Now they’ve been painted into a corner; they really have no counter to the message that they’re putting illegals ahead of us. So if they want something for DACA, they have no choice but to give in on what the mainstream wants. Or they are going to lose again on this issue in the 2018 and 2020 elections.

You mean just not the greatest, biggest, grandest, most beautiful wall ever paid for by Mexico. I sure could use a slice of that most beautiful slice of chocolate cake now.

When you stand back and see these posts,
they come across as deflection and quite childish.

Your repeated injection of this comment has no bearing on the deal being discussed. Your glee on this point has been addressed dozens of times.
stop trying to deflect.

It’s been pointed out, debated, and acknowledged a couple dozen times.

Why is it that’s all you got to say on the actual deal being debated now?

Here’s what I have to say. Some fencing and some drones is not the great wall Trump was talking about. No matter how he and his followers will now make believe that it was.

This fixation, there’s help available.

Many many months ago we moved passed what was discussed during the campaign to what looked likely to be implemented. Feel free to grade him after the deal is finalized.
