Why did anti-Catholics show up outside the pope's Yankee stadium mass?

After leaving the Yankee stadium subway stop while going to the Papal mass, I came face to face with a man wearing a sign ten feet tall saying, “Follow Christ, not the Pope.” In fact there were two of them, apparently from the same religious group, standing right in the middle of the thick crowd right in front of the exit from the subway. I have been wondering why they did that. My wife thought they did this out of envy.
Dealing with the Catholics going to the Papal mass in this way seemed rather like an Arab going to an American town to pass out fliers extolling terrorism. This seemed remarkably counter-productive.
Maybe this is off the topic, but I wouldlike to mention one incident there. There were also men passing out anti-Catholic tracts. I took one from one man and looked at it quickly to check it out, and saw it was one of the old Chick anti-Catholic tracts, this one in comic book form showing a Latino being rejected by God after he died because he was a Catholic. A few seconds after he gave it to me, I turned around to give it back and to say I didn’t want it, and he already had disappeared. I looked all around, and he was gone like lightening after seeing me look at it. Looking back at this I can’t help but laugh.

Yeah, talk about target-poor environments…

There were similar elements on the way out after the DC Mass. My wife and I avoided the most prominent group (mainly because we chose a less crowded route back to the Metro), but there were still quite a few people passing out various tracts on our trek back. We politely declined their offers.

Why were they there? I’m sure most were acting out of a confused sense of charity, trying to save us from what they perceive as an unholy, separated-from-Christ institution. Then, too, I’m sure there were those that were there just for confrontation’s sake, and to get media exposure.

Cheers.

Maybe they were Red Sox fans and wanted him to go to Fenway Park. 😉

Whenever you have an event of this importance, you will always find an anti-whatever element trying to inject negativity. They’re small people. In the case of these morons, God will take care of it. Roanoker

I believe that deep down these people know the Catholic Church is the truth, but out of envy and a blind obedience to thier “leader” thier envy transforms into hate.
The only thing that unites protestants is thier disdain or hatred of the Catholic Church.
A sure sign that we are right.
The Holy Father will be here soon for WYD so it will be interesting to see what crawls out from under rocks

There were probably 10-15 such folks or groups in D.C. I could actually hear their loudspeakers during part of the Mass but I think the police then quited them down. All of this was expected and Catholic Answers had solicited support to help protect our youth against the false teachings of such groups, though I don’t know what actions they took. I saw one priest briefly confront one of them and I had a brief discussion with one of them until he moved his attention to better targets. I wish this was turned into an opportunity to teach our faith better and confront these folks with a booth where people could get the truth. While many people attending the Masses probably know enough to defend their faith against these false teachings, I’m afraid that probably many do not.

Yeah - they were holding up their signs saying how we are all going to hell and how Catholics don’t follow the Bible and other silly nonsense. We just walked past and laughed, although it was really rude on their part, IMHO. Imagine if someone had done the same thing outside a Nation of Islam gathering or someone potested the Dalai Lama - they would’ve been destroyed in the papers for it. But pick on Catholics? Apparently that’s still ok.

I really wanna ask the protesters what their aim of protesting outside events are, i mean it’s so random to hold up signs that talk about clergy abusing kids… there’s absolutely no point in that sign? It’s not like it says “save the whales” or some thing.

In any case, outside the town hall today where the JCI Gala was held, there were just a handful of ‘protesters’ holding signs. 🤷
