Why did God choose wheat?

Wheat is the symbol of food in the Scripture and the only valid matter for the Eucharistic bread. On the other hand, it is one of the most allergenic foods, causing common health issues including celiac disease and various intolerances. God had perfect freedom creating it the way it is and choosing it as the staple food for Israel. For example, He could have made wheat less allergenic, as there are foods that cause practically no health problems at all, or He could have chosen any other substance as the staple food of Israel, most of them less problematic. Of course, the people in the Middle East are better adapted to wheat than most other nations, since they had started using it earlier. Wheat spread all around the world later, partly because of the Catholic Church employing it as the matter of the Eucharist. So, why did God design it like this?

because it was the common food of the time

what would you suggest he have chosen, commonly eaten, available to all even the poor, in his time period?

God was not bound by any facts or necessities. He created wheat. He could have given it any attributes whatsoever. He wanted it the way it is, and I cannot understand why (mainly because of its exceptionally common allergenic properties).

I was a diagnosed Celiac for the past 8 years. I had been a daily communicant for several years, and at the time I was diagnosed, Celiac was mostly misunderstood or unknown in the medical world (at least in the US) and especially in the Church. I had to abstain from the Eucharist for a long time and had many issues with contamination of the “gluten free” hosts and the chalices being used to give me the Precious Blood. Long story short… This past July I was completely healed of Celiac - my doctor confirmed this a couple of months ago - and I recently met a woman that is also Celiac, who had issues with receiving Communion in any form. After a time she of consultation with a priest and after praying about Who it is (and not just what: wheat…) that she is receiving, she took a leap of faith and started receiving again. After years of Celiac, since having started receiving again, not only is she tolerating the Eucharist, but biopsy results are showing that she is actually showing IMPROVEMENT for the first time.

I don’t advise people to go against medical advice, but I believe that faith can “move mountains” - that miracles happen when we put all of our trust in the Lord. I was going through a period of learning to completely trust God at the time I was healed - and was actually praying for the healing of a couple of other people in my life - when I suddenly was healed.

If you, or someone you know, is suffering in some way b/c of intolerance to wheat (the Eucharist especially), commit it to the Lord. As with all things, when we abandon ourselves to the will of God, there is always a blessing - even if the answer is not what we would like it to be. It took me 8 years to be blessed with a healing, but today I see a tremendous spiritual blessing that resulted from having endured what I did all of those years.

When we trust in Him, everything is a grace!

Because Gd being Gd and being omnipotent and omniscient can do anything G*d wants !
Seriouslly, one would have to have a phonomenally severe allegery-to the point of being disabled for the small amount of wheat contained in a host of the usual size to create an adverse reaction …especially if one is sincerely praying and accepting the miracle of receiving the Holy Eucharist.
In a likewise situation, there are thousands of religious reformed alcoholics that have no adverse reaction from ingesting the couple of drops of the Blood of Christ as part of the Holy Eucharist.
If anyone has such a severe allergy to wheat, they should see their priest who can arrange for special non-allergenic Hosts to be provided to them.

Transubstantiation is the teaching that during the Mass, at the consecration in the Lord’s Supper (Communion), the elements of the Eucharist, bread and wine, are transformed into the actual body and blood of Jesus and that they are no longer bread and wine, but only retain their appearance of bread and wine.

this should not be a problelm for wheat allergy.🙂

Rather than questioning God’s nature, let us rather question our nature. Through the sin of disobedience, death entered into this world. Before the fall, there was no sickness, allergies, or death. Had Adam and Eve remained obedient, we could speak with them today, as they would be yet alive. Celiac disease, and all infirmity, is the price of sin. It is in the DNA of our fallen human nature, which we inherited from our first parents. Yet, as has been pointed out, two species are offered to us.

Our Lord Jesus is Priest, Prophet and King. The use of wheat bread is Jesus’ fulfillment of prophecy given in Genesis 14. Melchizedek, the King of ancient Salem (later Jeru-Salem), was Priest of God, King of Salem and, inasmuch as he used bread and wine for his sacrifice (Genesis 14:18), Prophet of the covenant that would be realized at the incarnation of Christ.

Our problem with the bread and wine is a minor symptom of our ancestors’ sin. A far worse consequence of that original sin is our death. Yet, we have the promise that even death has been overcome through the obedience of Christ.

It’s very possible that the fact that wheat is an allergen in our current society has nothing to do with the wheat, but with what we have done with it. With all the genetic modifications we have done to our food, all of the processing that we take it through (bleaching etc), and all the chemicals we put in our bodies it’s very possible that the celiacs disease is a result of environmental pollution. Even if it is a genetic marker, we’ve seen from recent scientific evidence that much of our genetic code can be affected by what we consume, and what chemicals we expose our body to.

I had read this in a science or medicine article. The wheat today is not at all what wheat was just a couple hundred years ago, and very likely the cause of intolerance.

But the “accidents” (appearance, taste, affects to digestion, etc…) remain even after consecration. Though again, I’ve seen faith overcome the “accidents” in the case of intolerance.

The longer I live the more allergies to foods I learn about. Things I never think about as causing an allergic reaction apparently do for some people. It might be that for any given food someone on the Earth is allergic to it. I dont know that there would be any perfect food. Of course God could have made it so that there is but he chose not to for His reasons. It is just as there is disease and deformity those exist for His reasons. It may be hard for us to understand but it shouldn’t be too problematic accepting His sovereignty and good will.

Though some are allergic He chose the elements for His reasons. If with God nothing is a mistake then His coming when He did and choosing bread and wine were not mistakes. He could have come in our time and chosen tofu and Coke (or even grape juice). But He did not.

You could ask the same question about wine. Why would God choose wine, of all liquids, when so many people are alcoholics? Why not water? Or, why not have people bring the food of their own choosing to be transubstantiated?

We do not know the why’s of everything, just that this is what has been set up for us.

like anything else in the natural world that was created good but has become disordered, this too is the result of original sin. As it was created and as the human body was created, whatever God intended for our food was entirely wholesome. If our bodies have altered in how they react to those foods, or if the nature of those foods has been altered due to various forces so they are no longer nutritious to all humans, that too is ultimately the result of original sin.

The wheat we use today has no resemblance to the wheat of the time of Jesus. We use genetically modified wheat which is toxic. We went from 16 chromosomes to 42 in order to make wheat available world wide.

Those amber waves of grain?, gone. The wheat of today is a little weed.
