Why did I get a coin?

I went to church tonight (Holy Thursday). Once of the men who was going to have his feet washed ran into a problem and couldn’t attend. So while sitting in the pew before Mass, I was approached to, um, “stand in” for him.

Ok… so I figure–if it will help the church, it’s the least I can do.

Anyway… after the pastor dried each person’s feet, he gave them a little envelope. Mine had a dollar coin in it. I presume the others did, too, but I dodn’t know.

So my question is: huh?

A slightly more verbose version of the question: Why did I get a coin? Is this custom? An abuse? Graft? Some symbology that was lost on me?

Anyone have some insight they can share, please?

Each of the twelve at the Mass at my parish received a large, gift wrapped box before returning to their pews.

I have no idea what was enclosed or why they were given either.

Thanks for the info. The mystery deepens.

Well it sounds like it’s not just my parish then. What is the significance and history of this custom, I wonder…

It sounds like the British tradition of giving out “Maundy Money”.

For those that got gifts what is the name of your parish. I thought only Anglicans did this, but there is now an Anglican Rite of the Catholic Church so I am wondering if either your parish is part of that rite or if the priest of your Parish used to be Anglican.

Interesting…we didn’t do that. Instead we set up 12 stations around the church and families wash the feet of the men and WOMEN who came forward to have their feet washed.

No hijacking the thread, please.

My parish is St. Thomas Aquinas in Arizona. It started out as a small Catholic Mission in 1913 and is part of the Diocese of Phoenix. We have 3 priests. Our Pastor, I know is not a convert and our other 2 priests are missionary priests from Africa.

I have only been to one Holy Thursday in the Latin Church, when I went though RCIA. I didn’t see this happen but then it was a bit different how they did the foot washing.

There is an Anglican Use in the Latin Church, it is not a rite of its own, it is a Liturgical Use in the Latin Rite. There are only a handful of Anglican Use parishes and none in Rochester where Timidity is from so that can’t be the answer.
