I went to church tonight (Holy Thursday). Once of the men who was going to have his feet washed ran into a problem and couldn’t attend. So while sitting in the pew before Mass, I was approached to, um, “stand in” for him.
Ok… so I figure–if it will help the church, it’s the least I can do.
Anyway… after the pastor dried each person’s feet, he gave them a little envelope. Mine had a dollar coin in it. I presume the others did, too, but I dodn’t know.
So my question is: huh?
A slightly more verbose version of the question: Why did I get a coin? Is this custom? An abuse? Graft? Some symbology that was lost on me?
Anyone have some insight they can share, please?
