Why did Jesus not leave a better sign in the Eucharist?

How did early apostles know the Eucharist was the real presence without having it change substance? How do we know that it really is transubstantiated if the effects remain identical down to a molecular level?

I’m thinking of all the abuse he suffered. If he had left a different sign maybe more people would try to continue to beat him and inflict injury. This way non believers think so what, it’s just a piece of bread and some wine??? And still some people try to do evil things with and to the Eucharist…

Not an official answer. Just thinking… and it’s so simple in its complexity. Which folks-- years into the future won’t have bread and wine available for consecration?

I appreciate the response! I’m trying to figure a lot out and hope I didn’t come across as angry or attacking I’m trying simply to understand.

I don’t know about you but if the Ehucarist turned into blood, flesh and bones I may have a hard time eating it?

Hello Struggling1,
I have heard many people question why Christ did not do so-and-so better or make something clearer. Christ knew that no matter what he did people would contrive reasons not to believe. Even before His death, he predicted this through the parable of Lazarus and the rich man: people would not turn from their evil ways even if a man who was dead would come to them. Again, at the Resurrection, and when many holy men and women rose from their graves with Him, people still refused to believe.

The apostles believed in the True Presence because Christ flat out told them about it over and over in His ministry in language which was not able to be confused. They could not truly understand, for they had not yet received the Holy Spirit, but once they did, their eyes were opened and they believed.

If you look at the Eucharistic miracles, Christ actually did leave scientific evidence to support His claim of True Presence. They all share the same blood type, no matter how old the miracle is. Even the Shroud of Turin shares that blood type, AB.

As to Transubstantiation, this is simply the Catholic explanation of how the True Presence fits into our theology. “Substance” in our theology doesn’t have to be physical. It can be completely spiritual.

Hope this helps.

God Bless,
Br. Ben, CRM

Because if there were a spectacular sign along with the change, like glowing, then you would lose your free will. You would be compelled to believe. Christ wants you to accept it out of faith. However, the faithful who take it can witness to the personal spiritual improvement that it produces.

I appreciate this thank you a ton! Do you know if they have compared dna between the miracles?

Never heard about DNA, but in the Miracle of Lanciano, the host became flesh, and the flesh is human cardiac tissue of type AB, consistent with the source being of Middle Eastern descent

I came to believe intellectually in the Real Presence by the writings of the Early Church. To be honest the Eucharistic Miracles played no part in it. I can also see the doctrine in John 6. But what really convinces me, deep down, is actually receiving it. I know this is completely subjective so take it or leave it but here’s the truth- I’d be Catholic based entirely on the historical evidence and logic of it. I’m convinced it’s the true Church. Even if I went my entire life never experiencing God, never “feeling” anything, I’d still be Catholic because I’m convinced it’s True. However, the actual practice of Catholicism is, subjectively, a greater reason I’ll never leave. I’ve seen the effect the Eucharist has had in my life and in others. It’s undeniable. I’ve changed. People I know have changed. No other spiritual practice I’ve dabbled in produces these results.

The Church has not allowed DNA tests to be done on the blood and tissue of the Eucharistic miracles because the samples are always destroyed/broken down during those tests. The preservation and dignity of the Eucharist prohibits the Church from allowing this. The examinations on the blood type and tissue type were done through microscopic examination and the samples were not chemically altered in any way. They were returned to the Church after testing.

Thank you for giving me hope!
THANKS BE TO GOD!

The Eucharist is one of the primary focuses for my Order. It is truly a blessing to be able to help a brother in Christ come to a closer understanding of the Blessed Sacrament.

I will be praying for you.

They knew because he said so. They had seen that he was capable of doing what he said even though it could be most extraordianry that no human could do.

We know because we believe like the apostles did.

That’s the difference - whether to believe or unbelieve, which is nothing new but the same scenario also happened during that fateful time of the apostles.

God bless.

I appreciate this and didn’t know that! Forgive my ignorance but can’t if jusf involve a small piece? I’m sorry for so many questions and being doubtful I am trying!

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1
Christ is risen!
Happy Easter and God bless you!

Never worry about asking questions. St. Anselm of Canterbury’s motto was “Faith Seeking Understanding”. Questions draw us deeper into the knowledge of our Lord. The Church holds that any recognizable piece of the Eucharist holds within it the entirety of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ. There is even a part of the mass when the priest takes a crumb of the newly consecrated host and places it within the chalice. That crumb of the host is given the same reverence as the primary host. After consecration, priests and acolytes are advised to search the corporal placed on the altar for crumbs of the Blessed Sacrament that may have fallen off when they purify the vessels. Any act which knowingly results in the destruction of the Blessed Sacrament in any form actually results in immediate excommunication.
