Why did the talmud never get into christianity?

To me, I could care less if the Talmud adds anything to christianity. I find Christianity to be uninspired and a historical cause for persecution of Jews. I’d hardly call the Gospels quality literature worth reading for anyone who is not a christian.
I thought you would have protested as to how the Talmud has been very meaningful and important to the Jews ever since… although you may think that even to Christians (Catholics included) it should be obvious?

And the review’s author?
**Her name is **Ruth Langer. She is the Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and the Associate Director, Center for Christian-Jewish Learning, Theology Department at Boston College
**Ummm, hardly **an anti-Semite or uneducated neo-nazi . . .

That was a childish post on my part, responding with language in kind to Eden’s post. The Talmud is first and formost a series of rabbinic discussions on halacha – jewish law. It is meant to show us how to best implement God’s law into our daily lives. Its countercomponent to the halacha is the midrash. The stories and lessons that are also a integral part of Talmud.

If anyone has the time or the interest, they might want to read through the entire thread linked above.
I just have viewed the first 3 pages. Very interesting indeed, Valke2. I had no idea your father was Catholic… and Italian! 🙂

It does not surprise me that there may be references to Jesus in the Talmud, designed to mock Catholic doctrine. From a Jewish perspective in the milenia following the birth of christianity, there was little to praise about it. (This seems to be the central thesis in the book “Jesus in the Talmud”)

Having said what I said, Valke2, the way you answered sounds to me as being another way (indirect of course) to mean how important that book IS important to you and to the Jews in general… but anyhow!

I didn’t mean to imply that Talmud is not important to Jews. It is as important as all the rest of the scripture. Practially speaking, it is perhaps the most important work. for us.

Quite frankly, why would Jesus’ adversaries have wanted to praise it, if I may ask? It’s then only logical…
Oh, I’m just waking up, sorry! You must have been referring to what the Jewish people suffered at the hands of so many Christians after that, haven’t you? Indeed, that was a black part of our history… Not very inviting indeed! That was years after the Christians were decreeted to be altogether banned from the synagogues, wasn’t it? In emperor Constantin’s time or a bit after that?

The first Christians (along with other early heretical Jewish sects) were indeed banned from the synagogue because they were spreading their beliefs to the Jewish people and causing doctrinal confusion. But that’s all that happened, they were banned.

However, in the Middle Ages, the Catholic church not only banned (excommunicated) what they considered as heretics and apostates, they went after them and tortured/killed them. To me, that seems much worse.

Doesn’t the Talmud call Jesus and Mary all kinds of terrible names? I have heard that the Talmud calls Christians terrible names and says disgusting things about Jesus and the Virgin Mary that are too horrible to post here.

You most likely heard that from white supremacist websites that distort the Talmud.

If you want factual information and quotes not taken out of context, try: talmud.faithweb.com

I have to say, in the time I have been here, I have not once seen any Catholic post info from a reputable Talmudic site, only the neo-Nazi ones. This is puzzling, since when doing a search on Google, I turned up MANY Jewish websites about the Talmud, including some which have the entire Talmud available online.

Yet for some odd reason, Catholics here refer only to the antisemitic sites…

Hmm, sounds to me like someone’s been consulting an anti-Catholic “version” of history on one of those “we hate Catholics” websites! Maybe you need to go to an accurate resource for this?

Please provide sources that the Catholic Church tortured and killed heretices in the middle ages as opposed to the local and state governments acting on “behalf of” (but not really) the Church.

Your church whitewashes European history when it comes to the Inquisitions and the Crusades, which is why so few Catholics are aware of the persecutions of Jews and Protestants such as the Waldensians. And I know this first-hand, because last year I used an 8th grade Catholic school history text from the 1940s (The Old World and America) in homeschooling my daughter, for which I had to “fill in the rest of the story” for her since the Catholic book sanitized it so much.

As another poster here says, Google can be your friend if you want to learn the truth about the Catholic church and the Holy Office of the Inquisition, as well as Catholic monarchs (such as Ferdinand and Isabella) who persecuted non-Catholics in the name of their religion.

Or, if you are more of a TV watcher than an internet researcher, see The History Channel’s documentary on the Inquisition (by which they mean the Spanish one.)

WRONG, my friend.
I gave 4 sources including the
Studies in Christian-Jewish Relations at Boston College, along with a review written by their professor. As I stated before - HARDLY a neo-Nazi website.

**Being a little dramatic, wouldn’t you say? **

**It is you who needs a lesson in history, as every revisionist myth perpetuated by anti-Catholics about the Inquisitions and other state-sanctioned atrocities being started by the Church have been debunked. 👍 **

I wouldn’t trust the History Channel for anything - especially after their distorted bible presentations and distorted De Vinci code rubbish. John Dominic Crossan, a biblical historian, indeed!** ** If you knew anything about history or the Bible, you would know better than to recommend the History Channel for the “truth”.**

**I won’t make such a blanket statement about your religion as you did about mine - but the Talmud speaks for itself about its disdain for Jesus. **

So many on here falsely take the Talmud out of context and try to defame it…I’ve shown you that these passages were incorrectly attributed to Jesus, yet you refuse to accept that.

So why should I accept what you say about the Inquisitions? I know for a fact that ancestors of mine were driven out of Spain by Catholic monarchs who tried to force them to convert to Catholicism. I know that they went elsewhere and the Spanish Inquisition, when they later took over those areas, tried to force them to convert yet again.

This history is a part of my heritage, so you’ll have to excuse me if I cannot accept the Catholic version of it.

The Spanish Inquisition was a matter of the state - Spain - not the Catholic Church.

**But, why would I expect you to understand - you rely on the History Channel for your version of the “truth”. **

**Remember - it was the History Channel that perpetuated the lie (among many others) that Moses was probably on *hallucenogenics *when he “thought” he was conversing with God.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: **

Yes, I agree that the Spanish Inquisition was a product of the government of Spain…but why didn’t the church stop them?

And will you understand about the persecution of Jews by your religion if a priest tells you?

**Why didn’t the Church stop Napoleon? He kicked the Church out of France. **
Why do anti-Catholics always believe that the Church is an All-Powerful entity that can stop goverments at the drop of a hat?

Only if you will believe in the vile things that the Talmud says about Jesus as professed by professors at the **Studies in Christian-Jewish Relations at Boston College - some of whom are Jews. *👍 ***
