Why do athiests bother coming to this website?

Do they just enjoy arguing with other people and attacking their beliefs? I wonder what evolutionary mutation compels them to do that.
 
I guess they enjoy debating with believers. To try to understand how the other thinks. Of course, you sometimes get the atheists who are smug and so sure of themselves and only engage in dialogue if it’ll help stroke their intellectual egos. Not all atheists are like that, but I know a fair share of them.
 
Atheists come for various reasons and they are very welcome because this forum exists specifically for **the exchange of ideas **on philosophical topics…

Good. For the original poster, may I ask why are you here? And if you mind seeing atheists in this forum?
 
I am here because I am Catholic and I have questions for other Catholics. I don’t go to atheist forums.

Probably the same mutation that compels Christians to go to atheist forums and attacking their beliefs:shrug:🤷🤷

It has been years since I visited alt.atheism, but I would be willing to bet that the theists and non-theists are still arguing and arguing and…:slapfight::slapfight:

Many of them are missing something in their lives. I hope they come here to learn more about Jesus and the Church. I pray that some of them after visiting this site change their minds about God and ultimately convert. God bless:)

Just for interesting discussion really. There are loads of fascinating topics going on at any one time on this forum.

Also I have to saying joining this forum has genuinely improved my view of Catholic apologetics, those who show up on atheist forums are mostly… Well let’s just say they are generally not shining examples of what Christians should aspire to be like.

Just as there are people who give atheists a bad name, so is the case with Christians, sadly. Promoting the word of God is much more difficult when you have people promoting their own ridiculous ideas while flying the Christian banner.
 
I’m grateful for them coming here, even the smug ones. How boring it’d be if it was just a bunch of Catholics going at it over who is more pious.

You learn more from people with differeing opinions then you do from those of the same, or at least that’s what its been like for me.

So a hearty welcome to all atheists, agnostics, and anyone else who’s not Catholic!

I’m here because I enjoy the conversation and engaging some one that is not like myself in some way. I’d say conversation here ranges from agreement to debate to attack, though some times it’s not easy to distinguish one debating and arguing against an idea from some one attacking another. It’s also not easy to distinguish between when some one is trying to be antagonistic and when some one is expressing frustration.

One thing I find interesting (or maybe not?) is that I am pretty much the only atheist who goes to some of the other subforums other than philosophy. I never see any of you guys in the Family Life subforum and rarely in Non-Catholic religions. One girl said to me:
It’s nice to see such a compassionate and concerned and fair atheist among us. I’m not saying that atheists usually aren’t compassionate and so forth, but Im used to see them blast and bash when it comes to Christianity.

I’m aware that you didn’t intend that sentence to sound condescending and to completely and totally alienate everyone who doesn’t think like you.

But how do you not have the necessary perspective to see it as condescending and likely to completely and totally alienate everyone who doesn’t think like you?

Fortunately unChristians professing to fly the Christian banner are banned! 🙂
 
I no longer believe (indeed I try only to conclude things rather than believe anything) but Catholic thinking is still a point of reference and interest for me. I enjoy many of the thoughtful responses to my posts.

I particularly enjoyed it when I was arguing that a cross should not be allowed on public land. A believer pointed out that since I believed in nothing, if the cross where not there, there would be nothing there, and I would have a monument to what I believed in, and that would not be fair!😃

I’m also interested in some aspects of Catholic belief, such as forgiveness. I was very moved by the replied to a post I made asking “Who have you forgiven”.
 
In my book, atheists are our guests of honor.

I try to thank God everyday for allowing me to be Catholic and giving me all the graces that comes with being Catholic. I wish all the atheists had that grace and knew Almighty God and were nourished by the Eucharist, Sacred Scripture and received the other sacraments. As Christians it is our duty and responsibility to with love, answer questions and share our faith and pray for those who are seeking or are lost.
