Why do Baptists hate Catholics?

Most main line Baptists, such as the American Baptists, or Southern Baptists dont hate Catholics as far as I know; then again I could be wrong. I spent Five years in the Independant Fundamental Baptist movement (IFB), where I witnessed a genuine hatred towards anyone who didn’t believe or agree with their views. However, most of their venom was directed towards the Catholic Church. The Pastor of the church I attended was openly hostile towards the Catholic Church. During a church preaching service he compared the Catholic Church to the Nazi party, stating that the Catholic Church slaughtered over millions of Baptists during the dark ages. He would often reference the book called Foxes Book of Martyrs, and The Trail of Blood book by J.M. Carroll. Once from the preaching pulpit, he referred to Catholics as “wafer sucking bead swingers” I am not making this stuff up. The Independant Fundamental Baptist movement is nothing but bigotry and intolerance with a big Christian facade over it. I thank God every day for opening my eyes an ddelivering me out of that mess

Absolutely correct. 👍

But how did that transmission of faith over 1600-years occur? By the Catholic Church. If Jesus is the Physician, the Church is the Prescription and the Holy Spirit the antidote. 😉 So it is correct to say: ‘we gave it to you’. Most of all we shared with you our most Holy of Holy books: the Bible 🙂 But it was not our intention that it would be subverted. 😦

Define what you meen by ‘deep hatred for the catholic church’.

Does this apply to honest baptist who think the church is wrong, and genuinely want to warn you about it? Remember: Mormons and JWs claim to be persecuted and hated whenever someone disagrees with them. Let’s not play the role of the victim just because someone voices disagreement.
 
I was born a Catholic and I will die a Catholic. To me it is the truest religion founded by Christ. I love its 2000 year history, its beliefs, its traditions from the earliest church fathers, its influence on all of Christianity. I love the fact that Jesus is actually present on our altars, that we have a wonderful mother like Mary, that we have saints to emulate in the example of Christ and that we have wonderful prayers like the Rosary. If it wasn’t for the the Catholic church we wouldn’t even have the Bible. If the Catholic church wasn’t the true religion than why when someone enters into the service of the devil they need to renounce the Catholic church, and why is the black mass meant to be a parody of the Catholic Mass is if the Catholic Mass wasn’t truly from God? When you add everything up nothing comes close to the Catholic church and the Baptists are just too bland for me.
 
I have found not so much ‘hatred’ but deep suspicion about the Catholic Church by Baptists in the mistaken belief we worship statues and Mary. They are interested enough not to like us and treat us with suspicion but not interested enough to find out the truth. :rolleyes:

I do get slightly frustrated at some non-denominational evangelicals who think we came along quite recently. My brother in law is one such. He asked ‘how old was the Catholic Church?’ He truthfully believed the Catholic Church was more recent than Luther.😛 He has no conception of time in Church history sense and seem to operate in this mistaken belief while at the same time ignoring nearly 2000-years of Church history while paradoxically talking about ‘the early Church’ as if it was nothing whatsoever to do with us.It is a concept he just cannot [or will not] grasp and he is a leading light in his church! Folk look to him for guidance :confused:

All credit to him however, he has no prejudicial ideas about us worshipping statues and venerating Mary. He just does not want to know about us, changing the subject quikely if I try to discuss Catholicism and the sum total of his knowldge of Catholicism is next to nothing. He truthfully believes we are just a sect of Christendom outside of mainstream.

Not in the remotest bit interested in us, when I speak he just switches off so he effectively hears ‘nothing!’ He is very keen and always plugging his church.

Baptists despise some of the Pentecostal teachings too like speaking with tongues as one receives the Spirit, conditional security rather than eternal security as they believe, healing and miracles by the laying on of hands, baptism required for salvation, holiness, etc…

So it isn’t hatred just despising of views not shared

Don’t forget throughout centuries there were always churches where were deemed ‘heretical’ by the Catholic church who shared different beliefs. The reformation was hardly the start of those who didn’t agree with the mainstream.

These churches shared many beliefs that Protestants share but were not as successful as the Reformation

Really the only points of common ground were the obvious ones where the pre-Reformation dissenters rejected the authority of the Catholic Church. Their actual, positive teachings had little to do with the distinctive teachings of the Reformers.

The church is supposed to be the body of Christ… the body of Christ only teaches Christ’s teachings that he passed down to his apostles… not doctrines that developed over time

I think Catholics hate the Anglican Communion more than Baptists hate them.
 
Practicing Catholics do not hate anybody (Every person has a chance to conversion, sooner or later). We hate them being led away and be taught by false teachings… by false doctrines… by false teachers!:mad:

well… obviously you are surrounded by, I’d say, ordinary catholics (like most of us do). the question is, do you even try to admonish them or correct them if you find them doing wrong so that they’ll learn and find true conversion (in their heart)? Wasn’t that what St Paul did as can be read in most of his letters in the NT? To admonish one another…?
Or you isolate yourself so you’ll feel holier than them and start leading them away from the Faith…? …which is what a fallen catholic MUST do after leaving- to become ANTI-catholic?

Did Jesus tell His apostles to be fishers of ONLY GOOD men???
If the Catholic Church has only good men as her members I am in a wrong church!!!
 
DO not think that it is just Baptists that (harbor ill will and discriminate against) (hate) (distrust) (bear false witness) (insert your own verb of slander against) Catholics.

Here in Charlotte, NC, one of the largest churches (Calvary) had soccer on their large fields. It was meant to be a community outreach to the local hispanic community. However, Catholics were not allowed to be coaches of the teams. It was quite a topic on the local radio talk show for a day or two.

However I would say that the level of ignorance by Baptists about Catholics is what “scares” many Baptists.

Having grown up in the SB Church (and also taught adult Sunday School for years before I converted Easter 2006) I heard many sermons on Mary worshippers, statue worshippers, “great whore of babylon”, Pope is Anti-Christ, etc. Catholics don’t know their Bible, blah blah.

I guess they see Catholics in general as poorly catchesied and not very good (if at all) Christians. In raw numbers that might be correct as I think I learned more in 6 months of RCIA than most had learned in their entire adult live in the RCC. Why?

I would first of all say that I don’t understand why the RCC doesn’t have an adult Sunday School type program. Secondly, group studies (except for Gail Buckley’s which is excellent) seen to be almost non-existent. Also their is not a lay witness program like EE (Evangeism Explosion) or Roman Road so Catholics can go out and “lead others to Jesus” (I didn’t want to say that it is required but their are some people I think that could be persuaded if such a program existed).

Education of the other denonimations in a small pamphlet (turn to page 7 for Methodists, page 9 for Baptists) passed out at the parish could be highly instructive. A comparative religion type seminar might be very popular. Maybe have a two part series on the differences from their perspective and from our perspective.

In summary, education is the only way to fight ignaorance. And it is critical because the hatred is based on ignorance. Thank you for the soapbox.🙂
 
There are many who hate Catholics because they believe we are all doomed and anyone we convert will be condemned as well. They call us devil worshippers and expect the anti-Christ will be a pope.

Just think about how you would react to someone who would lead you to Satan. We are to be avoided as if their souls depended on it and in their mind it does.

BUT it is not all Baptists or protestants who thinks this way. It’s the hard core fundamentalists, the ones who think everyone else in the world is condemened unless you think and talk exactly like they do.

For any Catholic who hates any one else or any other group, they should know better and were taught better. We are are not required to “like” everyone. We don’t have to associate or agree with people we don’t like. BUT we are not to hate anyone, even our worse enemy. I know … tell that to the IRA or the folks during the crusades.

There are always exceptions and radicals in any group. But “good” Catholics, abiding by the laws of Christ are supposed to be forgiving and concerned for the welfare of everyone including their enemies.
