Why do Baptists hate Catholics?

Here is an example of the lies perpetuated on Catholics by the “comic book theologen” Jack Chick):

chick.com/reading/tracts/0071/0071_01.asp

This type of evangelism is rampant in the southeastern USA. I don’t quite get it, but I guess the synergy of it it is it “dumbs down” the gospel to the local’s own level. Maybe that’s part of it, it is easier to be Baptist if you are stupid. (I’m being sarcastic, sorrrrrrrrrrrryy 😛 )

But seriously, Catholics in order to fight this type of ignorance need to educate themselves first.

:
The church is supposed to be the body of Christ… the body of Christ only teaches Christ’s teachings that he passed down to his apostles… not doctrines that developed over time
So where did the Holy Spirit go? Christ left us the Holy Spirit to lead us into truth. I have heard non Catholic believers described as “incomplete”. I have never used that term but it does seem to fit when discussing differences. A Church guides believers using all the gifts Christ left us including words and Traditions that we have today…gifts that are guarded by the Church He left us.
Speaking of doctrines developed over time…I think you are correct that most sects outside the Catholic Church developed between 1800 and today. But that wasn’t what you meant …was it? Just because the Church formally pronounces a truth does not mean that the Church “invented” that truth. Newton did not invent gravity. He only descibed it formally so that all could understand it. Even if Newton had been a Catholic…he wasn’t wrong.🤷

Not all Baptists hate Catholics, so I don’t think the title of this thread is fair.

There is a small fringe group of Baptist groups which subscribe to some kind of secretive blood trail of the martyrs idea where the “true church” supposedly went into hiding during the supposed “persecution” by the Roman Catholic Church, something which they consider to be of the spirit of antichrist. Baptists who hold this blood trail view seem to be particularly negative and insulting toward Catholics, even though there seems to be no actual historical record to back up this claim made by them.

Many Baptists do not actually subscribe strongly to this idea as far as I know, although some softer variations might exist I suppose. Clearly, many Baptists do strongly oppose some of the teachings of the Catholic Church, just as other Protestants do. But many Baptists, AFAIK, could not care less about any kind of ‘apostolic succession’ anyway, since their denominations do not rely on this kind of argument to validate their own faith. They seem to be more than happy to overlook a significant portion of the ECFs too, though I do not feel this is intentionally overlooked. They just seem to be not concerned with anything beyond the Bible to validate their beliefs, oblivious of any significant history behind how their denomination actually came about and quite happy with this outlook too.

Uh YES. Why do you question that? Go to my thread “The bible or the church” and get some answers.
People who reject the Catholic Church are not necessarily rejecting Jesus Christ. To say otherwise is ridiculous. The vast majority of Protestants are devoted followers of Jesus Christ, yet for one reason or another do not approve of the Catholic Church. The “Church” to them IMO, is Christianity in general.

The type attitude you have contributes to the negative feelings non-Catholic Christians have toward us Catholics.

I beg to differ my friend. The church, the church Jesus Christ founded will save you. Go to the other thread in why this is so before you mouth off your negativity.

Thank you for pointing out some important truths. Others just use a forum like this as a chance to slam anyone who doesn’t lean the same way they do. What’s even more disturbing is when their fellow catholics disagree with them they turn their ire onto you. What a shame.

I don’t know what your experience has been but mine has been to hear slams against the Church that vary from the ordinary misunderstanding and ignorant to the obscene and scurilous.
It is heartening to hear Catholics defend the Church even if it isn’t done with kid gloves. Politics and religion always involve emotional responses…what else is new?

Not disagreeing with you one bit. I guess that depends on what persuasion you are coming from. It’s a shame we can’t get along regardless of our differences.

However both sides (the Baptist and the Catholic) have taken a lighter tone towards eachother in the spirit of “ecumenism”.
Really? I think that is only true if the Baptists & Catholics in question do not discuss religion… It also helps if the Catholic is not catechized… 😃

I could not agree with you more… that people here do that and it is a terrible shame… I thought we were Christians?? (I find myself asking…).

Even so… One reason Catholics (well-catechized ones, i should say) “slam” others (get excited about differences 🙂 ) is that we Catholics KNOW that others are in error…& to one degree or another: lost… and it disturbs us… , OK, maybe i can only speak for myself & a few others…
but it isn’t all about slamming… As someone recently reminded me, we must see good in others… Sometimes a person’s motive really is good, not evil…

Myself, i know how much the Church has done for me and it grieves me to see so mnay others missing out… I went to this restaurant the other day… alone… had a cup of coffee… I looked around and many people there, even those who seemed to be part of a big family or group… well, they looked kind of blah… even kinda “dead”… I live in an area where Catholics are rare… so i assumed most of them weren’t Catholic . I used to feel the way a lot of them looked… and my life now is not exactly a walk in the park 24/7 but in any case, my point is that my life now has so much more meaning… (Jesus said “I came to give life…”)… I am “learning Jesus” in the Catholic Church as i never knew Him before… 🙂 I genuinely feel sorry for people who do not know Jesus as i do… It bothers me when i see so many who THINK that they DO know him as i do!! When i see them close their minds & hearts to what the Church has to offer…

So what looks like slamming isn’t always slamming…

I think Catholics hate the Anglican Communion more than Baptists hate them.
Please don’t speak for Catholics, especially if you’re not Catholic.

I am Catholic and I don’t hate anyone.

I most certainly can speak for the venom that I have witnessed them heap onto Anglicans. Speak for yourself but I have heard it many times, even on Catholic radio.

I beg to differ my friend. The church, the church Jesus Christ founded will save you. Go to the other thread in why this is so before you mouth off your negativity.
Mouth off? Excuse me, but this is a forum. I’m expressing my opinion that you are wrong. As far as being negative, you are the one, my friend, who is being negative towards all non-Catholic Christians.

Your past statements on this thread insinuate it’s the Catholic Church or nothing to be saved. So all non-Catholic Christians are doomed, if they don’t convert? Uh, no.

Now, I haven’t read this other thread you are talking about, but I don’t have too, plus I don’t have time right now. If what I’ve described above is accurate, then IMO, you are wrong. If I’ve misinterpreted your intent, then I beg your pardon.

Whether one reaches salvation or not is up to God, and him only.

Sects have existed outside mainstream catholicism since the church was formally organized. Montanists, Sabellianists, Arianists, etc… to name a few.

All of these proclaimed different things that were considered herectical by the mainstream.

Therefore the doctrine of the Trinity developed, infant baptism developed, baptism using the titles prescribed in Matthew 28:19 and not pronouncing the name of Jesus Christ developed (it was Cardinal Ratzinger who said, the shorter formula was used widely in the beginning). Transubstantiation developed… all these things as answers to heresies or so called.

The Rosary, the Roman Papal supremacy… everything…

now you used Newton and gravity… however people knew when they fell… something pulled them down… they knew things did not fall upward but downward…

No one knew of these developed doctrines or the laws therein. They just knew what jesus told them and many went astray with weird doctrines or adopted practices such as Dec 25th for Christmas when that was a PAGAN holiday.

All of you who are sincere need only to go to the Holy Scriptures and to God to reveal what truth is.

Some of these doctrines are not wrong… but if they contradict the Scriptures or add to in such a way that the apostles would have been wrong in what they said… then the doctrine is wrong.

God never wipes out a truth he revealed before… he only builds on it.

You have to understand that according to catholic dogma… Jesus Christ is only found within the organizational barrier of the Catholic church.

Yet other churches are preaching the message Peter preached… they are not part of the church according to catholic dogma.

Uh, no. :tsktsk:
uh, yeah…

Technically, the person IS rejecting Christ when he rejects the Church…

But the Church does not teach that that person goes to Hell for it (necessarily)…

If he doesn’t believe the Church is the true Church Christ established, he is not held accountable for his ignorance… However, if he even suspects in any way that it is… he could be in trouble…

This is not true… The Church teaches that other religions are not all … well, worthless… the Church, for instnace, accepts the baptisms and marriages of most non-Catholic churches… (though the Church does not call them churches but ecclessial communities, since there is only one Church). The only baptisms and marriages the Church does not accept as valid are JW s and Mormons… and possibly a few other lesser-known cults…

It is true that the fullness of Christianity is in the Catholic Church and tht it is best for all to be members thereof… but if one does not believe, with all his heart that the Catholic C is the real and only one… he is not held accountable for that ignorance… It is only when he knows or suspects it may be that there is a problem…

It amazes me how one Christian could despise and hate another. I think there is much more in common than what divides us. There are differences in belief regarding papal authority, role of Mary( honoring her does not subtract the role and worship due to Jesus), purgatory, etc. Most Protestants are of European extraction and their ancestors were once Catholic from the 6th century to the 16 th century so its not like there never was any affinity there. Half of Western Europe is still Catholic such as France, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, 1/3 Holland, over 1/3 Germany, 1/2 Switzerland, Austria, Poland, over 2/3 former Czech, 2/3 Hungary, Croatia. Though church attendence is not as high there except for Poland, Italy and Ireland it is much higher than in Protestant Europe. I think Christians should start learning to stick together, if they don’t people of another religion and totally different beliefs will end up taking over and filling the gap such as what is now happening in Europe

My point about Newton was not that people knew that things fall down. The point was simply that because Newton defined gravity and explained it…he did not cause it to be a reality.
If reading a Bible is all one needs I ask you to explain how 2 people can read the scripture and come to 2 different understandings. Please, this is such a basic observation of human nature. You are going to have to explain this but the truth is you can’t and that is the rub. This is why the non Catholic sects are in schism constantly and it is why the Catholic Church has the Magesterium…and thank G-d for it.

As a former Baptist I’m going to let y’all in on a little secret: the reason that Baptists, traditionally, don’t like Catholics is because non of you “cradle catholics” can sing.😉 Seriously, what is up with the tone deafness at Mass?
