Why do Catholics get singled out?

Ok, so I know that Clerical sex abuse is very very evil but, at the same time the Boy Scouts of America had a huge sex abuse cover up which has a 3,200 cases in a 31 period (1974-2005) and had very little media attention. rawstory.com/rs/2012/12/26/la-times-publishes-boy-scout-sex-abuse-records/

Two reasons.
  1. Catholics are a religious organization that claim to hold the absolute truth and the perfect morality. The people who claim themselves to be as such need criticism when they don’t act like it.
  2. Catholics as a whole, are a lot bigger then the boy scouts.

Even though the Catholic Church is a divinely appointed religion we do recognize that we can and do make mistakes as all people do. If the Catholic Church has reacted to criticize by reforming such as the Counter Reformation and by addressing it on both the local and international level. vatican.va/resources/index_en.htm archindy.org/abuse/index.html

Fair enough, and this is a reason that I’m not big on Catholic bashing. I’m just pointing out why it happens.

because those who hate the Church need a scapegoat. I pointed out in a thread on another site that there are sex abusers in public schools and protestant churches, but someone said that doesn’t mean they can’t criticize the catholic church for covering up the rape of children. These same people want the church to allow gay marriage and abortion.

There could be 1000s more abusers elsewhere, but Christ’s church gets picked on. But we need to remember the gates of Hell can not prevail…

And we need to pray the Saint Michael prayer…that’s my favorite prayer at bedtime.

In my mind I have decided to always accept responsibility for my own actions and not try to rationalize my way out of things because others have done it also. The abuse scandal probably seems to keep highlighting our faith more often than not because, in general, it becomes an excuse for someone who wants an excuse to leave the Church, or for someone who hates Catholicism to hate it more. Certainly you know what I mean and have met or know people in both categories, I sure do.

I agree with Inquisitors assement as to why people do it. ALthough I have to say for a 2000 year old organization which holds a high moral code I think weve done reasonably well over the years 🙂

All that said, there are abusers everywhere, and when it happens at a university, they just blame the professor, make a public statement condeming it, and oust him. CYA at its finest. Part of being a Christian based organization is that you realize that we are all sinners, and rather than just getting rid of the fat, imo the Catholic tries to take responsibility for helping ALL people. Not excusing it.

John 15:18-19
Knox Bible
18 If the world hates you, be sure that it hated me before it learned to hate you. 19 If you belonged to the world, the world would know you for its own and love you; it is because you do not belong to the world, because I have singled you out from the midst of the world, that the world hates you.

Since the world is living a lie, it hates the truth. What we see today is simply the fulfillment of prophecy.

For the same reason that the entire country was talking about Joe Paterno last year even though Jerry Sandusky was the abuser. Cover Up.

The crimes were horrific enough, but the cover up in order to “protect the Church” brought on all the “singling out”. And honestly, as long as people continue to make excuses, equivocate and defend the indefensible-the Church will continue to be singled out.

Well many people hate the Catholic Church, so if it wasn’t abuse, it would be shifted to something else, child-abuse isn’t the only stone thrown at it, but it’s a biggy.

And sadly many members, & shepherds cut a rod for their own backs and the innocent as well, who have to carry a cross they didn’t care for, but a cross we must carry, just like Jesus !

This. Though the US public school system did the same thing for years shuffling around pedo teachers to different schools to avoid scandal.

You are speaking only of the past 50 years. What about the 1,930 before that? The Church has always been under attack. That fraction of the current pandemic known as the sex scandal which occurred in the Catholic Church is only the latest reason.

Ever notice that homosexuality is a sin only if a Catholic Priest engages in it?

Google Jewish sex scandal, Protestant sex scandal, Muslim sex scandal, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Boy Scouts, ad infinitum. All have sex scandals and cover-ups. Who gets the press?

But the US school system is composed of thousands of individual districts with different authorities-not one hierarchical structure with one head-a head viewed by many as infallible. Coincidentally, the Penn State football empire was a smaller version of that same type of structure-and people there did view Paterno as pretty infallible. (I have good friends who live in that area and went to Penn State)

Yes, this stuff went on EVERYWHERE there were children, but the larger the institution and the more holy the reputation the bigger the cover up and the harder the fall.

This website is an eye opener, old now, but i’m sure it could be added to, as if we want to hear more bad news !

The Catholic Church prays for ALL SINNERS ! whether in the fold or not !

Because we don’t change our minds, but remain constant.

For example, birth control, with others accept.

Same sex positions, we say no no.

We step on politician’s toes.

and so on.

It is called “not going along” or “fighting the crowd”.

Just a thought.

I like that thought a lot. Thanks man

They don’t list how many Catholic clergy were convicted of this. Do you know of a site where the number of convicted Catholic clergy is listed similar to that website?

Do you know of a newspaper/ newspapers that has a list of those I posted up on the link ?

The USCCB does an annual audit of all allegations of abuse within the Catholic Church in the U.S. It is published in April for the previous year, so I don’t think 2012 is available yet.

Here is the last report:

usccb.org/issues-and-action/child-and-youth-protection/upload/2011-annual-report.pdf

The report notes that:
Three percent of allegations made during the 2011 audit period were by current minors.Of the twenty-one allegations made by minors, seven were considered credible by law enforcement; three were determined to be false, five were determined to be boundary violations, and three are still under investigation.
In 2010, only 8 allegations were considered credible by law enforcement.

I’d say the reforms by Pope Benedict are working. The small number of cases are themselves still too many, but show definite improvement in how the Church handles problems, its youth protection programs, and seminary admissions and faith formation policies.
During the 2011 audit period, 683 adults who were victims/survivors of abuse in the past came forward to report an allegation for the first time. Allegations were made against 551 priests and seven deacons. of the accused clerics, 253 are deceased, 58 had already been laicized, 184 have been removed from ministry, and 281 had been named in previous audits.
So even for the older cases, 45% of all priests who were accused for 2011 were already deceased, 75% of all priests who were accused for 2011 are either deceased, already removed from ministry, already laicized, or missing; and over 90% of all abuse accusations last year allege incidents from at least two decades ago (the most common time period was from almost 40 years ago: 1975-1979).

Again, this is not to excuse the horrible crimes that did occur, but Pope Benedict made the hard decisions. He correctly recognized the institutional problems and pushed for changes back in the 1980s, as even the NY Times had to acknowledge: nytimes.com/2010/12/02/world/europe/02pope.html?_r=0

Why do Catholics get singled out? Many people hate an organization that says the individual and the government is not the source of moral authority, God is, and that in fact, God established our Church. As many people wish to usurp the role of God, that is a threat to them, and they will do anything they can to tear down the Church because of the failings of its human members. Other institutions get a pass.

The incredible rate of abuse and institutional cover-up in other religions, in schools, in medical care facilities, in juvenile correctional facilities, in the media and the entertainment industry (see the BBC scandal, Michael Jackson, Roman Polanski, and many others) and politics continues and dwarfs the past and certainly the current rate of abuse in the Church.

Any institution with young people in it will attract predators, as the evil are attracted to and prey on the innocence of the young. The Boy Scouts of America (BSA), to its credit, has undertaken similar policies to that of the Church and the rate of abuse has fallen dramatically - so, of course it will be necessary to change all that to suit the demands of the few. Pope Benedict ordered in 2005 that the Church “cannot admit in seminaries nor give access to the sacred Orders to those who practice homosexuality, who present deep-seated homosexual tendencies or support the so-called gay culture.” In conjunction with this and other policies, abuse rates plummeted. The BSA has barred homosexuals from leadership positions, but are now being pressured to reverse this policy. Those of us who lived through the scandal in the Church shudder when they consider what the results of a changed BSA policy on this issue will bring. Those who cannot learn from the mistakes of the past will be condemned to repeat them.

Just today in my hometown newspaper, there was an investigative report on the sexual abuse of juveniles and resulting coverup in state juvenile treatment centers for abuse and addiction in Arizona: azcentral.com/news/articles/20121120teen-facility-risk-overlooked.html?nclick_check=1
